Xbox died need help picking one out

Hey guys,

My Xbox died lastnight while I was playing Ninja Gaiden :( I don't know if it's the drive or the HDD or something else. It turns on but I get a black screen thats it. It happened during a Cutscene just went blank and nothing happened. Well I play my box more then my other consoles so I'm going to buy another. I tried to do a search on the forum but I keep getting page cannot be displayed.

I've been hearing that there are people buying Xbox's with cheap lasers etc. Is there a way to distinguish a good quality Xbox with a good drive and a bad xbox, when I first bought it I kept getting dirty disc errors but they eventually went away.

Thanks for the help,

Samsung is the best.
Thompson is the worst.

Hitachi GDR-8050L drives are being used in Xbox's recently. I don't know how it compares to the other 3 though. The tray for the Hitachi drives looks similar to the tray in the Thompson drives, except the hole is a little larger.

The best way to ensure a Samsung drive is to get one with the serial code ending in "06". There's a cut out on the back of the box where you can see the code.

At least that was how it was a year ago when I bought two of them.

My XBOX serial ends in 06. It's a Philips drive.

How bad is having a Phillips drive? I noticed that in playing Halo 2, the cutscenes have that crazy popping up problem a LOT and I was thinking that couldn't be right.

I remember hearing about it but I didn't think it was that bad. At times the background building doesn't pop up for almost 2 seconds.

Pop-up occurs regardless of your drive, BUT it can become worse depending on the condition of that drive. I've seen very obvious differences in the amount of pop-up on a variety of systems. Oddly enough, my Thompson drive handles it about as smoothly as I've seen...

Just buy one with a recent manufacture date (which should be just about any box on the shelves right now), and you'll be fine. The problems were with older Thompson drives that aren't being used any more.

I'm pretty sure that Philips and Samsung are pretty close in quality in terms of reading games, just that the Samsung is more compatible with recordable media.

I think I might have to go down this route soon (if any of you remember the thread about a mom stepping on Xbox disc tray, yeah that was me). Is it possible to transfer the HD through a local LAN or something? Because not everything can fit on a memory card and even of what can fit will be a major pain in the ass to transfer,

I have a thompson drive in mine and i've never had a problem since North American launch day. I don't believe any of the newer systems have the same problems earlier machine had.

Anyone Selling an xbox here? Preferably in Canada... I'm looking for the console, power connector/AV Cables and a Controller. I'm planning to trade mine in for some cash and buy another used one.
