Max wattage had a negative effect in this case, but you can run these benchmarks 10 different times and get 10 slightly different results. Overall, I'd say there is a minimal gain to be had from FSE at this point

I tried it today with Baldurs Gate 3 maxed out on the Xbox ROG Ally X vs Desktop. No noteworthy difference, its really just a matter of convenience. I dont need it since im now Desktop PC gaming(I dont use Big Picture Mode neither) but when I had my PC in the living room I definitely would prefer FSE.

Yeah absolutely. Maybe a few games will be able to take advantage of that extra freed up RAM, but overall this is just a better interface for TV and handheld gaming and you are able to see where they will be taking the UI with Xbox Magnus in the future.

Overall, I'd say it is very positive for Windows gaming.

If the Xbox ROG didnt have FSE it never would have been a consideration. Thats the reason I initially bought the Lenovo SteamOS.

FSE was going to be a thing either way in anticipation of Magnus. That's a natural first step to combine console and PC for the living room. Worked out well that they were able to pilot it with Rog Ally.

At the very end of this video it shows settings in FSE and startup app

You can autostart steam in big picture

Can anyone try this and record a boot and login. What happens with steam overlay va fullscreen overlay for example?

I have no proof. But I believe the Steam announcements caused them to escalate their timeline of bringing it to Desktop.

One thing that annoyed me was finding out that you cannot easily change the Steam Overlay button in the settings. I wanted to put it on one of the back paddles since the Xbox button is for FSE overlay but Steam will not allow you.

Very useful data. If that's the best they could do at Microsoft, I'm not sure they should even bother. Anyway, what's the battery life of the Legion go s like? I was thinking of picking one up.

It's ok. About an hour and a half at 30w, but I never run the power that high. I'm using around 15w and I'll get 2-3 hours

I haven't done any benchmarks but on my og rog ally z1e FSE freeing up a few Gb of extra ram definitely seems to help the system and games run better.

the ROG Ally (non X) is probably profiting more from this than most systems. its biggest issue was always the memory size, which is why the X added more and usually outperforms it in memory hungry titles.

What tool did you use, if you don't mind sharing?

Sure. here is the Github page:

The download is the very bottom of this page:

I usd the full rather than lite, but I don't really know the difference. lol

Thank you, most appreciated!

That makes sense. The Legion Go S has 32GB so that is why I'm seeing little difference in FSE.

Had a bit of a play around.

Enjoy launching into the Xbox app, however, I had to enter my passcode which couldn't be done without the use of a keyboard, which defeats the purpose somewhat. Hopefully this is just due to it being in Beta as they'd want to fix that.

Launching 3rd party games worked relatively seamlessly for the most part, apart from the occasional pop up from Steam when it loaded as well as a bit of launcher inception with Games like BG3, which had to open Steam, then the Larian launcher. The Larian launcher is also annoying as fuck which doesn't help and also required me to use the mouse. Launching AW2 from Epic worked well and launched straight into the game which was nice.

Haven't noticed any performance differences, but haven't played too long using it.

All in all, I quite like it. Hopefully they can fix up the passcode login / have an onscreen keyboard and will be useful for an upcoming living room build I'm doing.

I haven't played BG3, but you might find that you can do a bit of renaming to swap the launcher and the main game and skip the launcher. Or perhaps there's a launch argument to be set in Steam. Have you checked PCGW?

This one if the known issues.

Known issues

[Xbox full screen experience for PC]

  • [NEW] The virtual keyboard is not shown for controller users on devices without a touch screen. Please use the physical keyboard as a workaround for now.
  • [NEW] Some apps may behave unexpectedly when using FSE, particularly those that expect to be locked to a given size or launch additional windows.

There you go, I could have just read the notes below lo!l Good to know they're aware of those issues though. Hopefully they get resolved soon as it's a good way to get a 'console' experience with access to lots of PC games / libraries.

So if I don't have an Xbox library why would I get a Magnus Xbox if I can get the full screen experience on any PC?
Probably the same question: why Steam machine exist if you can have your Steam Library on PC? MS will aim to a niche segment of market, as Valve does with the Steam Machine...Also they could deliver a poweful system in a box, for a price more competitive than an equivalent mid or high end traditional gaming PC.

I like some of what I see with the full screen UI experience, but man Microsoft needs to improve their own actual UI for their storefront. It's just rows of boxes, some missing cover art, and just poor sorting/categories to find stuff if you want to shop. Their own ecosystem makes it hard to discover things, and wanna spend money there.

Also think they really need to expand their GameInput API to replicate features like Steam Input, where you can set profiles or actions sets, so gamepad buttons can act as keystrokes and sticks as a virtual mouse. That way if launching any PC game fails or hits a launcher where I need to use a mouse to navigate, I can just have my pad complete the action to get into the game. I don't see any way to actually make the full-screen experience work in a living room without this, and if game pass titles through the Xbox app don't play nice with Steam Input in my experience.

Zealotry? What is with these fringe characterizations lately? Saw some calling Steam users "cultists". Just bizarre.

You think there's nothing iffy about switching full time to Linux since 2022, then showing up in multiple threads about Windows to go "Windows 11 sucks, I can't take it anymore…I'm going to switch to Linux" in 2025?

I did not coin that term, anyway. 'Linux Zealotry' and 'open source zealotry' are well used terms. Google it?

I'd say there is a Grand Canyon between "iffy" and "zealotry". Zealotry is usually not just one guy contradicting himself either.

Full screen experience has so been underwhelming as fuck on handhelds.

They have a LONG way to go to make Windows gaming friendly like SteamOS.

I'd give MS praise for trying but there is simply no possible way they could make a dedicated gaming OS that wouldn't be fucked up with telemetry ads and bloat.

I've gained more using FSE on my ROG ALLY than I did with SteamOS on my Lenovo.
