Xbox Live Silver question

Ecrofirt

Member
OK, so I had Xbox Live for a few months on Xbox when Halo 2 came out.

I've since cancelled my subscription.

Now I'm trying to sign up for Xbox Live Silver, or whatever.

Can someone walk me through the process? I want to make sure I don't end up accidentally signing up for XBLG.

Is there any way I can keep Ecrofirt without having to pay for an account?

Will recovering my account force me into a Gold membership?

When you get your Xbox 360, you'll be asked to create a profile on the system upon first firing it up. Instead of needing to create a profile for each individual game, you create one profile on the hardware, and it's used for all games. This makes things extremely easy for you, since you can set some default options (like setting inverted Y-axis for all FPS games) that are applied every time you start a new game.

If you have an ethernet cable plugged in, I believe you'll automatically have Xbox Live Silver when you create the profile. Since Silver comes included with the 360, I would imagine this is how it is given to you.

I'm plugged into my router.

If I try to access Xbox Live Marketplace or Xbox Live Arcade games, it takes me to the Join Xbox Live screen.

From here it tells me Ecrofirt is already in use on Xbox Live. I can try to recover the account, but doing so asks me for the last four digits of the credit card used to sign up for Live.

What I've been asking is if trying to recover my account is going to automatically sign me up for Gold.

I don't think there are currently enough people with your predicament in order to get an answer (considering only a few thousand 360s are out there right now). You should probably call support.

As soon as I plugged in my xbox 360 it asked me to make a gamer tag, and set up a profile. After that It asked me if I wanted gold. You get a free month of Gold, so I signed up for that. I think if you didn't want Gold you would just say no and you would be signed up for silver.

whatever you do, do it quickly. Think how many more people there will be with LIVE accounts now that silver is free.

Hurry hurry hurry

For those with a 360 already, is there an option there to change your Gamer Tag like rumored? I hate my old tag and would rather just make a new account if I had to keep it.

I hit the Xbox Live button on my remote when I was doing the initial setup, and it booted me out of it. Never got asked about Xbox Live Gold

It's good to pay together.
When you've dealt with the hassle of hundreds of 12-year-olds calling in every day to change their GamerTags... when they've got a dozen or so trial accounts and you KNOW they'll just want to change it to something else two hours later... you'll appreciate just how essential this update is.

And the folks at Microsoft realized full well just how many parents open up their wallets completely to spoil their youngsters, so it should come as no surprise that they've elected to turn what was once a customer service headache into a potential source of revenue.

That's just smart business.

For those of you wondering, btw... you'll get that 'free month of Gold' for the first three unique Silvers you set up on your X360. After that, you're out of luck.

You have to confirm any subscription, last four digits of your CC is verification only.

Yeah, I know you'll have to confirm it. My situation isn't just transfering over an active account to 360, though. My account was cancelled months ago, but they've still got my name in the system.

If I recover that account, am I going to be forced into Xbox Live Gold by default? It's not a very difficult question, but it seems like some pople answering aren't reading through the thread.

OK and can you confirm this from personal experience, or is there some place where it was stated you can link me to?

I don't mean to be so anal, but last time I was on Live we used my dad's credit card. If I get him to give me the info again and he ends up getting charged, he's gonig to be pissed.

if your account was cancelled a few months ago, it might not be recoverable at all

My account was cancelled in like February. Why would Ecrofirt still be in the system if it couldn't be recovered?

oh that far away, it's unrecoverable... mine was cancelled in July and it couldn't be recovered last month... i even got to "Level 2" tech support about it...

Well, that should answer that for me then.

Wonder why they keep the names in the system.
Retired GamerTags are kept in the system for historical purposes, for stats and for offense tracking. Some refinements may have been introduced for X360 which could allow for the potential of releasing these retired names back into the fold at some point, but nothing has been decided on the matter up until now.

As for recovering old cancelled names, it's made quite clear by XBL reps that names are "unrecoverable" at the time of deactivating one's account. In reality, the truth is that you may have a 30 to 60-day window with which to re-enable an expired GamerTag... but there are no guarantees.

This issue is rendered more or less moot with X360 as expired Gold accounts will merely revert into free Silver subscriptions. The only instance where you can LOSE a Silver GamerTag is by not accessing the XBL network for a period of roughly 6 months or so.

What's the diff between Gold and Silver?

I just bought a 12 month Gold Card. I can activate it WHENEVER I want to start using the Gold, right, not from date of purchase? I think the Premium pack comes with 1 month of gold already, and I don't want to activate it now if I'll lose that month.

Gold lets you play online. Silver doesn't.

Use your free month first, by all means.

Exactly... although one bit of additional advice. Once that free month kicks in, you can add that 12-month subscription code into your X360 immediately. It will 'stack the time' and kick off that year-long subscription after your initial month of Gold runs out. So feel free to activate that card on Day 1.

Thanks a lot guys. Total XBL noob here, having skipped out on the original Xcrate.

Any word on how long the trial versions of Xbox Arcade games last?

They are simply limited in various ways, either lacking most of the levels or by including a gameplay timer. You can keep replaying the demo over and over, though.

They should last forever. I think they are more along the lines of limited demos, only letting you play with certain features or certain levels, or for a length of time or however the game decides.
