xbox modding/hard drive/re-installing questions HELP!

ok so i fucked up my modded xbox a long time ago trying to install some software. since then i cant do anything except play games on it. no evox dashboard and no ftp'ing at all.

well i recently got my hands on an "xbox refresh disc". its made by microsoft and its used to basically wipe the hard drive and restore everything to factory settings. so what i was gonna do was restore it like it was a brand new xbox and try to install evox all over again.

first i wanna know...is this even possible (the method i would use)? secondly, will i have to reflash the bios? if you do, how do i find out which mod chip i have...does that even matter?

Burn a CD such as Slayer's Auto-Install. When your Xbox runs the disc, it runs Evo-X, which has a built-in FTP server. You can fix things from there.

i have no idea what to fix, its been so long i dont even remember exactly how i messed it up.

If worst comes to worst, you can always just use the Auto-Install disc to reinstall your non-Microsoft programs.

It depends on the Xbox drive, really. CD-RWs usually work better. DVDs are definitely the way to go, but CD-RWs might work in a pinch.

And no problem! :D I've gotta get some sleep now, though; good luck.

I've read the refresh disc doesn't reinstall or fix anything beyond clearing the save games on the E: drive. It was made for rental places, supposedly.

Most likely u just need to copy evox dashboard back to the root of C: and it should fix things right up.

Why not just rename evoxdash.xbe to default.xbe, throw it on a CDRW/DVDRW, and put it in your Xbox. It should launch the thing, as long as its named default.

wow..this whole time you were stuck with such a problem that could be easily fixed in 5 minutes. Here's a HUGE tip... go sign up at www.xbox-scene.com forums and start reading threads. You'll be shocked in how much you'll learn in a few minutes.

i used slayers auto-installer 2.6 last night, now i get error 13 "trouble launching dashboard".

its one big circle. ive tried many times in the past ive probably put about 10 hours into trying to fix between last night and several months ago when i was trying then.

im thinking theres a file thats configured wrong. one of the files is set to load a file that isnt there. im just not exactly sure what file and what could be wrong. thats my only guess.

its really frustrating, im close to just getting a new xbox and soft modding it..ARGHH!!

Doesn't Slayers have an option to format and copy nothing but the retail files back on there? I'm assuming the Slayers auto-installer installs exploits (maybe), apps and the like on top of it all.

yes, joe, we need some more info.

Here's the Xbox-Scene explanation of error 13:
13 - kernel - Dashboard launch fail (due to missing/bad key, or anything else that would prevent it from running) and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed.

Does it still boot your Slayers disc? What type of modchip do you have? Is it soldered in?

If it still boots the Slayers disc, you can probably choose the option to install a new HDD or repain an old one (never used the disc, so I'm not sure of the wording, but there's something similiar to that in there).

When you get it working again, make a backup of your C and E drives through FTP, and store them on your PC or on a CD so you can restore it back to how it was if you fuck it up again.

retail hd, no idea what bios or mod chip...thats the problem :(

the slayers disc still boots up, and this is the info i can get from that...

Chip Type -> MODCHIP (or unkown HomeBrew)

Bios> 4034 Retail (or EliteX/EnigmahX)

i didnt install the chip so i couldnt tell you but i do know its a couple years old.

let me tell you what i did with the disc:
-new install/rebuild - retail HD
-full installer/rebuild retail hd

did that, then i rebooted without the disc and got error 13. then i installed evox on the C drive and still got error 13.

should i do a "FORMAT HARD DRIVE/RESTORE RETAIL" then install evox?

sounds like maybe you've got a flashed EEPROM and not a modchip.

and if you try booting it without the chip and it's giving you errors, I'm wondering if the bios is trying to load a program that Slayers didn't put on there.

Like maybe if it's a flashed EEPROM, it's trying to boot C:\default.xbe on the hard drive, but it's not there now.

well there was a switch on it (until i ripped it out, that might be the problem too) and dont you need a chip for a switch? at least a couple years ago you might have?

should i try opening up the slayer iso and renaming the xbe? to something else?

put the switch back on.

and don't do anything with the slayer ISO. That's fine, The Error 13 sounds like it's having a problem finding your dashboard.

i ripped the wires out and i didnt install the switch. not sure if i would be able to reconnect it....

What is the name of the EvolutionX xbe your putting on the HD? Your xbox might be looking for a different name.

rc213: exactly what I'm thinking.

I don't know if the bois is looking for default.exe, evoxdash.xbe... it could be looking for anything.

ok lets say the disc installed evoxdash.xbe but its looking for default.xbe

what options on the disc would i do? would i format then do a new install/full rebuild?

on slayer menu it says the F drive is completely empty at 0. shouldnt there be something on there?

if the bios is looking for default.xbe and Slayers installed evoxdash.xbe, you've got to FTP into the Xbox, go into the C drive, and rename the evoxdash.xbe to default.xbe

As for the F drive, I know mine always has 0 on it. I'm pretty sure only one of the retail HDD brands is big enough for an F drive.

on the root directory of the iso its default.xbe at 770,048 bytes (is it bytes?).

then in the system\retail\c folder its evoxdash.xbe also 770,048 bytes.

don't change anything with the ISO. The ISO is fine.

put the disc in your Xbox, and boot up to Slayers. Then FTP into your Xbox, and change the name of evoxdash.xbe to default.xbe, and see if that works.

And before I forget, don't ever put in that Microsoft Recovery Disc into your Xbox, you you might as well use it as a doorstop.

ok before i ftp here are the slayer settings:

type: (blank)
IP: (blank)
setup network: yes
static ip: no
ip: 192.168.1.200

does that seem right? and the login is xbox/xbox right? or is it (blank)/xbox?

ok i renamed evoxdash.xbe to default.xbe and got the same error 13. (same thing with xboxdash.xbe).

there's a default.xbe in the D drive along with an evox.ini but it wont let me rename it.

slayers doesnt even list a D drive.

no go on evox.xbe

when i view or go to edit on the xbe file in the C drive all that it says is "XBEH" and thats it. its an empty file?

how can i find out what mod chip it is? it would be almost impossible to get a hold of the person who did it for me. can i open it up and look?

you might want to try

"FORMAT HARD DRIVE/RESTORE RETAIL" or retry -new install/rebuild - retail HD

make sure it finishes, doing it's thing, so everything is installed.

i really did a number on this thing. all because of fucking baku baku.

Are u sure the version of EvolutionX is good/complete?
i got it from xbins, it unzipped and i burnt the iso successfuly so as far as i can tell it its complete.

im restoring to retail hd and im gonna start over. lets see what happens.

Will Slayer's auto boot if you don't have a chip? I assume that you need a chip in order to bypass the M$ protection scheme. I'm asking for friends with soft modded XBoxes.

i restored to retail hd, then installed evox on retail hd C: and still error 13.

this is BEYOND frustrating.

i just talked to my brother, it was his friend who modded it. he says he didnt put in a mod chip and in his words "he just fucked with the bios".

according to slayer my bios is eliteX/enigmahX.
