Xbox Surround Sound help

Hi,

I just bought an Xbox and have hooked it up to my receiver. I set the Xbox itself on Dolby Digital, but I'm still only getting stereo sound, not 5.1 (my receiver usually detects the signal and the sound will be formatted in 5.1). Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
Dan

Would be a good start to tell us what cables you used to hook it up? You need an optical cable to get DD5.1 out of xbox. But right now i'll assume you plugged the composite or component stereo cables (red and white) in your setup's audio in.

Xbox doesnt have optical output out of the box like ps2 does :\

You need one of microsoft's AV pack or depending on the connection your TV can support monster's cables which has a seperate adapter that plugs in the video cable and then you can plug an optical cable in that adapter to the receiver.

advanced AV pack that supports s-video and optical out

High definition AV pack that supports component (green/blue/red) and optical out

Im not sure they support composite (yellow video cable) + optical out though. edit- i guess the advanced AV pack has composite, from the picture it seems so at least.

I use standard cables and select auto on my receiver I get Pro Logic 2.

If I buy the AV pack and run the opitcal cable, what is it I gain?

How is DD 5.1 different from PL2?

PL2 is like super-stereo. DD5.1 actually has five separate channels (instead of two) and independently sends separate signals to the five speakers for positional sounds.

Wow thanks for the info. This realy sucks. I'm guessing one of these cables is gonna run me about $20?

Target sells an S-video and Optical cable in a package for $13. If you look around the optical should be available on its own for $10 or less. Here's one for $3: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...d_csp_2/102-6766683-5135331?v=glance&n=507846

ChrisReid, thanks for the info! I've been looking all over to get my hands on sme inexpensive optical cable. I'll be placing an order tonight after work.
