Wow... What a gorgeous title. Too bad it drags and drags and drags.
Really? The opening hour or so did commence so slowly that it left me wondering about all the praise.

PM2 was a solid 8.8. Nothing revolutionary, but I got a kick out of it. I wouldn't have missed Bobbery or Rawk Hawk for anything.

It's pretty slow paced and lacks challenge I must say. The place I'm currently in just lasts and lasts. I enjoyed N64 version more than I've enjoyed this so far. But I'm dedicated finishing it.

Next up: Fable.

Yeah, Paper Mario 2 wasn't very exciting story/character-wise. It had a few occasions of comedy...but most of the time it was trying too hard (or not even trying at all). And some of the story-parts just made me wanna bang my head against a wall because of how utterly slow and pointless they were. And the overall pacing is slooow.
Although I enjoyed the battle system, it gets a bit old to perform the same mini-game routines over and over again with no ways of actually skipping them during the less important fights. I think it would be better to turn this into a real action-RPG instead...

So much backtracking, ugh. And it was so easy...it was still ok.I haven't finished it though, got to the last boss, died, and the motivation to watch all of those cut scenes again just isn't in me :lol

Wow, this thread turned into a collection of the most ho-hum impressions I've heard of the game on this forum. Seem to remember everyone gushing about it at first...

Safe to say it's the least of the "Mario RPG's" out of Paper Mario 1, Super Mario RPG, and Mario & Luigi?

I gave up on Super Mario RPG after 30 mins because I couldn't motivate myself to continue any longer, never played Paper Mario 1, but I did play Mario & Luigi, and liked it a lot...much more than Paper Mario 2.

And yes, I was really, really excited about Paper Mario 2...especially after hearing a lot of praise at GAF, for example.

Then I'll add to the list of "What the hell is everyone else in this thread thinking?" category...Definitely one of my favorite RPGs...

I'd actually say...

Paper Mario > Paper Mario 2 >> Mario & Luigi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mario RPG

I actually liked Mario RPG more than the Paper versions!

The Paper Marios just go so...tediously...paced...ok...moving...on...to next thing...

I competely agree with jarrod's rating of the games. PM2 is fun, but it was slighty overrated. I didn't so much dialogue and some of the backtracking makes Metroid Prime look linear.

Something like that, besides the ridiculous exaggeration. I enjoyed SMRPG.

Mario & Luigi was kinda dumb. It did some things really well (better pace than PM2), but the battle system (the meat of the game) was mostly uninteresting (whereas PM2 has an excellent one).

I'm going with Mama Smurf on this one: I don't think I had as much fun with any 2004 game than I did with PM2. It wasn't perfect, but it was extremely enjoyable.

You, sir, are anti-fun...How could anyone dislike the most active RPG battle system ever?

Did anyone else beat the pit of 100 trials? I thought that part of the game rocked, especially at Level 100.

Nothing beats dying at level 99 your first time doing it and punching a giant block of wood. :lol

Right.. just in case someone decides to go back to 2004 in a time machine and release one more awesome game. :lol

Well, unlike you I don't have enough time to play all the games I want when they first come out. So, out of the 2004 released titles I've played, PM2 is my favourite.

Repeatedly smashing my testicles with a hammer is also quite 'active'. But that doesn't make it fun.

PM2 was definetly one of my favorite games last year. The sense of humor was great and the battles rarely got boring. Also, I find it very hard to believe that anybody is having trouble with the last boss. Hell, the first boss gave me more trouble, but that is because I forgot to equip the
cricket sound badge.

OH SHIT. I can't believe you said that. I feel the same way too. 7.5 at most. I finished it because I didn't want it hanging over my head but damn the fucking fetch quests in this one. MY WORST FULL RETAIL PURCHASE ALL 2004.

How does PM2 compare to PM? I loved the first PM, in fact I consider it the best N64 game, simply because it has amazing Zelda-style flow to it, in the sense that as you gradually progress through the game, you find items or accomplish tasks that unlock earlier areas and you get to go back and forth between old and new places a lot. That was the reason Zelda 3 kicked ass and it's the reason Paper Mario kicked ass.

well. LOVED paper mario. Dreaded paper mario TYD. Not as good by half. Some of the people on this board just rave like its the next best thing but taking it in, it was seriously flawed and not that great. Wait fro something like $20-25 before you pick it up.

Seriously flawed? I call bullshit.

The game is not seriously flawed. Is it my favorite game of last year? No, I prefered in the very least Metroid Prime 2 and am really enjoying Pikmin 2 thus far. But I put 35 hours into PM and never really thought ill of it. There were a couple of moments where I thought the fetchquestions was annoying, but those pipes made it a whole lot easier.

If the battle system had had problems, I think it would have been seriously flawed...but as it was it was varied enough to work for me. I can see how some of the story elements might not have worked for some, but I enjoyed the sidekicks, enjoyed a bulk of the story, and enjoyed myself. It does start off a little slowly, but it picks up in my view, with a good variety in terms of levels and in terms of sidekicks. Sidequests were a little on the disappointing side, but I think it was a very good game, regardless.

But, note to Nintendo: port Paper Mario to the DS already. I have a great deal of hope in the game getting a release elsewhere, because I'd really like to play it and don't want to buy a used N64 copy. That's just a waste when a DS Port would actually cost the exact same price.

a) repetitive structure check

b) flawed bonus quest mode (nothing more than fetch quests) and a whole fucking list of it + stupid hunt for a character later on check

c) more fetch quest in game mode. see: Character hunts, find rings. Solve mysteries that involves backtracking and talking to the RIGHT character.

D) boring Peach sequences. Why have they if they're going to be THIS dull. Same with the
Bowser
sequences. zzzzz Only good thing is the two twists at teh end.
a) bowser fight b) not really twist but peach's possession

very very play by numbers.

on the flip side, the paper elements (boat, plane)..etc were well done. I had okay fun with it but its not even near an 8 or 9.

Super Mario RPG is the better experience. More interesting story, better character development, and most of all better gameplay. The whole title is just so unique and so beautiful and so interesting.
