Xenosaga 2 arrives in Europe

Just bought Tekken 5 Pal today and inside the package there was a nice surprise.
In the Pal software catalogue both Soul Calibur 3 and Xenosaga 2 are listed as 'coming soon'.
This is the first episode of the Xeno series to arrive in Europe ever.
Hopefully it will be the beginning of a new trend for Namco here.

PS: Tekken5 rocks!

That'd be annoying seeing how we didnt even get a sniff of number one :(

I also wanted Tales of Rebirth. I went on a one man mission to bombard them with emails getting them to bring them across lol. In the end I decided from now on I'm importing almost everything. Japan gets all the cool stuff.

If this is true, then I'd like to know what the heck Namco are smoking. Xenosaga episode 2 is kinda weak without having first played episode 1. I suspect that what's more likely to be the case is that "coming soon" doesn't actually mean "coming soon" but "we'd like to release it someday". The official line from Namco Europe on Xenosaga has always been that they "would like to release it, but (insert excuse here)" - it's never been officially cancelled. Basically, I wouldn't hold your breath; if you really want to play Xenosaga, just import it.

No on the catalogue it's a confirmed future title of Namco's Pal lineup together with SC3.
The truth is that developers don't care if people haven't played the previous episodes, especially in Europe.
It's really nothing new.Think about the Silent Hill series on Xbox.
They have number 2,then no number 3 and lastly number 4 :lol :D

Finally European gamers can experience the brilliance of Xenosaga 2, Tekken 5 and soon to be Soul Calibur 3.

Same reason Konami didnt release Suikoden 3 but did release Suikoden 4!

Not really. XS2 is meant to be a direct follow up to XS1. They are part of a series, like Shenmue 1 and 2. Sui 3 and 4 can be played on their own, as they are not connected.

I wonder why Namco didn't include this with the German Tekken 5.
It's coming far too late, European players have no clue about what happened im the prequel and the localization will cost millions. Why do I have a feeling that this will be the last RPG on PS2 Namco is bringing over here? Tales of Legendia would have been a much better choice.

*boggle*

Okay, time to dig out Namco UK's email address and see if I can find out what's going on.

They'll probably bundle the PAL Xenosaga 2 with a DVD of cut-scenes from the first game, to save you the tedium of ever having to play it (although obviously you'll still have the even greater tedium of playing the second one). Namco here are probably just trying to make back some of the money that they didn't make (they had stupidly high expectations) on the second one by doing a PAL version of it.

Localization?
It won't be localized :D just in english like many other GDRs ( Star Ocean,Nippon Ichi products etc).

heh? I thought all of the Silent Hill games were kinda stand-alones.. the only real connection they have is creepy town Silent Hill.

though I heared SH1 & SH3 had some connections, but that didn't count for SH2 & SH4.

Am I wrong? If so, please clarify.. 'cause I still have to start with Silent Hill 2 & 3 (never played SH1 and no need to play crappy SH4 :lol)

SCEE never releases non-localized titles. It'll probably have English voices with localized subtitles.

but who said, that SCEE is publishing xenosaga pt.2? soul calibur and r:racing were published by ea, street racing syndicate by codemasters.

I really don't think SCEE is publishing it.
If that were the case Xenosaga would have come in Europe much earlier.SCEE probably refused to publish the series since the beginning and just recently Namco has found an other publisher.
Lately Koei,Ubisoft,Codemaster are bringing various RPGs here.

Yeah, cause these were multiplatform titles. So far every PS2 exclusive Namco game has been published by SCEE (remember Soul Calibur III?)

@Elios: I don't think Namco would give the publishing rights of such an important title to Codemasters (who are not capable of releasing their titles on the whole continent but instead they only bring them to UK and Italy) or Koei (who only published Disgaea, La Pucelle and Phantom Brave because of their close relationship to Nippon Ichi - saleswise all three titles performed terribly). And I don't think that Ubi Soft was pleased that much by the performance of Star Ocean 3 or Grandia 2 that they decided to give it another shot.
SCEE did state 2 years ago that they were interested in Xenosaga Episode I, I don't kow why it never happened but I'm sure it wasn't their fault.

right, but i dont think scee is that stupid - and for ps2 exclusive rpgs they have (like it seems) dragon quest VIII and could publish the new arc the lad game. so, i dont see any reason, that scee will publish a rpg (with only average reviews) without its important (storywise) predecessor.

Really, there aren't any similar examples of this happening before. Xenosaga is supposed to be a series of games which are linked together by an (eventually) coherent story. Hell, the series itself was planned to be 6 parts from the beginning. Skipping the FIRST part (and well, the fifth as well) is just sad. Maybe it's similar to Shenmue 2 not being released for DC in the US, but I think the reverse is worse (not getting the first game in a series), and Shenmue 2 was released for Xbox later on anyway.

Yeah, please do that. It seems weird but wtf. - it's pal, we're used to it.

Play.com has it ready for preorder...

Well, I finally got a reply from Namco today, it says:

Namco Ltd. Consumer Division said:
We have every intention in releasing this title for Europe but I am afraid that nothing has been announced as yet.

Seeing as how this is almost identical to what they said for Xenosaga Episode 1, I expect that it is all just a storm in a teacup and it's not really coming out at all. Carry on importing, chaps.

Hooray to SCEE but what's with the bonus DVD? Nobody wants to watch cinematics for 12 hours in order to understand a game with even more cinematics... But it's not that Europe is some kind of utopia in terms of RPG's, so I'll get it nonetheless.

Just call me psychic, or something.

Eurogamer are reporting on this now too. I guess it's a good thing but I'm still left wondering why they're starting with episode II. I've sent another email to Namco asking what's going on...

Probably because the staff who did the first game don't have time/can't be bothered to go back and do the first game for PAL, and it's quicker and easier to whack a PAL conversion on the second one and bundle a DVD movie with it covering all the events in the first game. It's very probably a cost/time issue (and regardless of what happens, people will whinge that it's taken forever to come out on PAL in the first place and won't buy it, so they can't win either way).

Xenosaga 2 is an average game. It is not as bad as the reviews on this boards. Xenosaga 1 is far superior. Namco destroyed a good series by firing the original casts and downgrading the story arc.

Xenosaga 1 sold a million units. Did their Tales games do better? Odd.

Chronicles of EXenosaga misfortunate.

CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR XENOSAGA 2!!

This page is a summary of FAQ section that was once temporarily placed due to hundreds of inquiries arising from unexpected media coverages of Jan/18/2005 about Soraya's leaving Xenosaga series. Answers were offered only for the purpose of clearing so many misunderstandings. Soraya and this site have no intention of announcing the answers loudly.

1. Soraya noted "Soraya has quit this series. No questions please." in very small fonts on her job history page in this site January 1st, 2005. She used the word "quit" for "to depart from", but not for "to abandon". It was simply her current job status.

2. January 19, 2005 morning (JST), Soraya received some threatening E-mails from upset people. Mails accused Soraya as if she were the traitor, deserter deserved to die.

3. Soraya wondered how the situation suddenly happend. An E-mail from North America has kindly let her know that several game-news sites reported her leaving. Some of those sites brought somewhat misleading views, without any confirmation of the facts.

4. Soraya decided to give answers to most frequently questions. The following are the summary of answers.

Leaving was not Soraya's decision. Soraya was told goodbye same as in the case of other Episode I artists including Mr. Yasunori Mitsuda, Mr. Kunihiko Tanaka, and the Mr. you-know-who. (Please do not ask Soraya who he is.)
Soraya is a freelance artist.
There was no particular reason behind the displacement of old artists. The new director of Xenosaga II/III just wants the saga all new.
The official advertisement says the new saga will have new sounds, new designs (as seen in Epsode II) and more easier story to read (as seen in the disc 2 of the Episode II).
Soraya and Tetsuya Takahashi were marginally involved in the Episode II by contributing the first version of the script. (It was not a plot outline but a complete script including actual characters' lines.)
Soraya's last contribution to the saga was the first version of the script for the Episode II and rewrites of The Pied Piper. (The game for Vodafone sold in Japan 2004)
The shortened/adapted script of the Episode II is by Monolithsoft.
You can see Soraya's mark she left to the Episode II in:
The conversation between Juli and Ziggy
Momo Encephalon (In first version, It was not Juli's idea of destroying Momo's memory, but a subcommitteeman's. Juli hesitated.)
The story about U.R.T.V. (with the exception of the chapters after Momo Encephalon and young Albedo's verbal abuse/violent acts against Sakura. They were added by Monolithsoft.)
Albedo's short speech about the higher dimension. (His last words "You look like you lost your sweetheart ... anyway I hate you both" were added by Monolithsoft.)
Soraya doesn't know what the story of the Episode III will be like. The new writer of the Episode III will write a new story in his style. (The chapters after Momo Encephalon and Disc 2 are his style.)
The new team has the right to change or ignore Takahashi's plot outline.
Soraya and Takahashi have been willing to help the new team if requested.
Soraya can not comment on Takahashi's current status.
Soraya wrote approximately half of of the script for the Episode I. She is responsible for:
Ziggy and his family, Voyager, Momo, Mizrahis, Godwins, Yuriev, U.R.T.V.s, and the part of Shion during her stay in Durandal and the Kookai Foundation
Soraya is not an expensive artist.
Soraya has created no delay.
The parent company is not responsible to the changeover.
The Episode II had the same amount of budget as the Episode I.
The first version of the script by Soraya and Takahashi was not religiously or politically sensitive. It had just harmless chapters like:
Ziggy's past history (as seen in The Pied Piper)
U.R.T.V.'s past history (as seen in the Episode II)
Shion's past history with Febronia (removed)
Jr's rapid growing (removed)
Both juvenile and grown-up Jr. switching available in the battle (removed)
The ghost of the old Miltia (removed)
The death of Sakura (removed)
Brief reunion with grown-up Citrine (removed)
Gaignun vs Zohar emulators (removed)
Jr.'s transformation/overdrive (removed)
Jr. & Albedo vs U-DO vs KOS-MOS 3rd armament (removed)
Shion's spiritual seeking/witnessing/awakening (removed)
The truth about KOS-MOS (removed)
Conversation between chaos and the red cloak man (removed)
Conversation between Nephilim and the boy with the blocks (removed)
An antimatter annihilation of Albedo (removed)
Removed chapter/events were rejected/deleted subjects. It's highly unlikely to be shown in the future Episode.
Soraya has no intention of playing for attention. No one has to pay attention to this.
Soraya has no option to come back. And she knows well the saga no longer needs Saga.
A message from Soraya

Thank you all who sent us heartwarming messages. I loved the Xeno universe and its wonderful fan base, that's what I'll miss the most. Forget about good old days and enjoy whole new saga.

Best wishes.

.fixed

Which you know, selling 1 million worldwide in 3 three regions is just as good as selling 1 million in one region for the most part, so success it was.

Xenosaga 1 is not available in Europe, that makes it 2 regions. Reading about how much was cut from Xenosaga 2, it makes me lose interest in the Xenosaga series. Xenosaga 2 did end with a bang, but knowing it could have been so much more if not Namco madness, i feel sick. What was Namco thinking, killing a Greatest Hit series!

Well, I got a reply to my email to Namco, and while it completely fails to answer the question I asked, it does contain some slightly useful information:

Namco Ltd. said:
I am pleased to tell you that Xenosaga II will be released in the UK on the 28th October and on the 2nd November for the rest of Europe.

The game will also include a bonus DVD showing movie footage of the story so far, as we were unable to bring Xenosaga I to Europe. The speech will only be in English but there will be options to change the text only into either French or German.

Wasn't the US bonus DVD bilingual (i.e. it had Japanese audio as well as English)? Seems like we're getting gypped...
