Anyone here using XP's remote desktop capability? I'm thinking of setting it up at home so I can access my PC from work. Anything I should look out for?

I use it occassionally, in fact I'm using it right now, but I prefer VNC as you can use it with any windows version, unlike remote desktop.

As long as you set up a password you should be ok.

I believe you need Pro to use Remote Desktop. It's smoother than VNC in my experience, but VNC is handy since you can view it on practically any computer.

Remote Desktop is really nice, fast and efficient. But as the others pointed out, you do need the Professional version of Windows XP (or server editions of Windows 2000)

Just make sure you change the default ports on RD if you want an extra layer of security.

TightVNC is also pretty decent and free, but I like the fullscreen mode of RD.

You can only host from a Win XP pro machine but you can connect with any Windows OS. For XP its already included but if you're using 2000 or something else, you can simply d/l the client to connect.

Where do you change the port though? I don't recall seeing a port setting. It would be great if I could set it up so I could remote desktop to more than one computer on my network.

I can't stand VNC because of how slow it is. I love the responsiveness of remote desktop and use it all the time.

I tried setting my up home pc for remote desktop connections. I got it to work on my own internal LAN (using a Linksys WRT54GS router) but I can't get it to work when I'm attempting to connect from an external IP.

I forwarded the port 3389 on my router to the desktop PC but nothing...anyone have a similar problem? Something else I need to change/set?

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Remote desktop is an open door for hackers. I turn that sh!t off ASAP. I use TightVNC at home and in the office.

There are many versions and variations. None of which I have found to be slow.

Yeah, open for hackers and I can't even connect even though I know the settings/password. :( Anyway my home computer is sitting at home right now powered down. I think it's pretty safe.

Yeah I don't get it either. We use remote desktop here at work to terminal service into servers down in the U.S...seems pretty safe to me.

I use remote desktop to connect to the development and production server at work. We use our domain logins for that and we use a VPN connection to Remote to several banks.

This may be a silly question, but have you disabled (or at least configured) the firewall on your XP machine to allow external connections?

And VNC is nice if you want control of the console itself. I know RD disables any use of the console when it's being run.

Yup I tried both. First I configured the firewall to allow "Remote Desktop" as an exception. Then I disabled it entirely.

Strange, only thing I can suggest is to plug your machine directly to the internet (no router) and test it that way.

If that's working you'll know its the router that's doing it. At least you'll be able to narrow it down.

For those of you that are brave enough :

Microsoft actually has an activex version of the remote desktop client - meaning you can access your desktop from any pc with IE. (yeah I know, lots of red flags in this sentence)

Granted you have to have somewhere to host the actual activex control, but once you do get it set up it's pretty nice to have that free roaming ability anywhere.
