I was in an Apple Store today, and when messing around with the iPod photo, I noticed that it had noticible lag when scrolling or executing commands, compared to the B&W 4G iPods that were there.

Does anyone have an iPod photo? If so, have you noticed a difference between the two lines? Do its additional featues make it a must-buy, or is it just fancy?

(By the way, they said that they won't have any more iPod shuffles in for at least three weeks. So, if you're waiting for one...either try online, or keep waiting.)

i got one as a gift, there is lag when changing screens in the menu. Honestly its not worth the money, i got it as a gift so im not really complaining. All ive heard is the sound is "improved" but i cant really tell since my old MD kicks the shit out of it but it does rival my dell dj in the sound dept (dell is still better IMO), the lack for custom eq also sucks. If you have a 4G ipod stick with it, if not get an iriver.

I've been contemplating on exactly what I want to get myself after my cd player died a few weeks ago.

I've played around with one a friend of mine at school has. It is definetly quite laggy and I felt that the b&w ones (tried my sister's ipod mini) felt much more responsive. I didn't notice too big a difference in the sound between the ipods. Which is why I think its more worth it to get the regular line over the photo one.

Personally, I am unable to afford either of the choices (aside from a mini...but I much prefer the Zen Touch Micro due to the features offered) , and so have been looking over 4 different (cheaper) alternatives of which I am still unsure: Creative Zen Touch, Creative Zen Touch Micro, Hi-MD, and Rio Karma. Any experiences from the people here with any of these choices?

I feel the PSP makes for a better photo viewer than the iPod photo. The bigger screen is a positive, but it only supports JPEGS. :(

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
But...but you can look at photos on an itty-bitty LCD. If Apple was going for a multi functional MP3 player, and if they're going to charge what they're charging for it, they should've made the LCD bigger and given the device some PDA-like functionality...

I have a 20GB 3G, and I'm LONG since maxed out on room. Since I have one of those CompUSA plans, I have some trade-in value towards a new one. However, the current trade is between a) buying a 4G 40GB model or b) waiting for announcements (and availability) for a 5G model. However, I haven't heard a THING about what's coming next for iPod...and I'm getting a little sick of swapping music on and off the 3G all the time.

If the 5G was going to be an incredible step forward (FM tuner, different body construction, color, etc.), then it would be worth the wait. If it's another incremental step, then I might as well get a 4G now.

ThinkSecret.com says:

"5G iPod

Information pertaining to Apple's fifth-generation iPod is extremely scarce as Apple has gone to extraordinary measures to protect the confidentiality of its cash cow music player. The 5G iPod, which Think Secret doesn't expect will appear until the middle of the year at the earliest, will move away from the iconic white form factor towards a more silver enclosure that matches the Mac mini, PowerBook, and Power Mac products, sources say.

Apple is expected to tap Toshiba for the company's new 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive when it becomes available later this year, although more appealing is the single-platter 40GB hard drive Toshiba is also developing. Current 40GB iPods use a Toshiba drive with two 20GB platters, which accounts for that model's added heft compared to the 20GB iPod. A single-platter 40GB drive will enable a 5G iPod to be as thin as today's 20GB model."

PSP is a great photo viewer, but iPod photo has TV out. So it depends on your usage plans. Taking it round to grannies? iPod is good. Sharing with friends? PSP is probably enough.

I'd rather have small 40GB than 80GB. Especially if the focus is still music.

I have an iPod photo, which I primarily bought becuase it was small 60GB player.

There is lag. I have never had any otehr iPod so I don't know how it compares.
