y'know, I thought firefox was supposed to block popups

But now it seems that every backwater site I go to, popups come up.

I've run Ad Aware, Spybot...both with updated definitions, and popup blocker is still on. So yeah, what the hell?

google "popups must die".

it is a beta extension that will eventually be included in firefox.

the popups you are likely getting now are exploiting popup code available in flash and java. use popups must die to block them.

warning, it will actually block a number of legitimate site popups. just add those to your whitelist.

Firefox was never able to stop all the popups. It's just that now probably everyone has figured out which kind of popups can trick it, and everybody's using them. IE is the same way, unless you go with the exclusive blocking where you have to specify which sites are allowed to have popups.

Same old security is nothing more than limited userbase BS.

I'm not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me, but that's how it is from my experience - both IE and Firefox used to be a lot more successful at blocking popups than they are now. It doesn't seem that far fetched to expect ad-annoyance developers to be smart and agile, much like spammers, which always come up with new ways to trick filters.

What I really hate about Firefox is the popups it creates on its own to tell me that it couldn't load a page. I can read an error page just fine; I don't need a new popup popping up over whatever I happened to be doing in another page while waiting for the other one to (not) load... It's especially irksome when playing online trivia and such things.

Even better, if I'm trying to load the other page in a new tab or window, it can't even keep the damned url in the address bar so that I can at least try to refresh it, instead of having to go back to the first page to click the link again.

Okay, after reading the last two posts, I must post again. Are you people using some special build or something? Firefox has not crashed on me once in the year or so I've been using it. Not once. It also doesn't open any popup windows to tell me anything about pages it couldn't load, ever. I'm using plain Firefox with a googlebar extension.

If you can count the WinXP build straight off the firefox homepage as a "special build," then sure.

And what about those memory leaks? Hoooo boy.

I love it when Firefox decies to jack up 225mb+ of documented (in processes) memory, and about 600mb of non-listed virtual memory.

I remember pop ups coming back around the same time for Firefox and Safari, but ever since Tiger, the pop ops have disappeared. I assumed that Firefox figured out how to get rid of them as well with the latest release. Interesting...

It's not trolling if it's true.
Nintendo fans are annoying as fuck but making repeated posts about how the DS looks and feels like a $19 Tiger Electronics handheld to rile them up is still trolling. ;)

Opinion != fact

This would be like making a thread that your DS broke.

btw calder, get to playin' your tourney game, foo

That bugged the hell out of me at first, too. There's a fix, though.

In Firefox, type "about:config" into the address bar and hit enter. Then go to the value "browser.xul.error_pages.enabled" and set it to "True".

Hitting refresh to try the page again still won't work, but the error page does give you a "try again" link which works just as well.

I still don't even know what the hell you guys are talking about.

Aside from that, more and more sites are figuring out how to get around Firefox's pop-up blocker, but Firefox still blocks the overwhelmingly vast majority of them for me.

Firefox +1

Only occasionally do I get a popup ad.

Every person I give Firefox to swears it's faster than IE on whatever platform they're running. The only people using IE after I switch them to Firefox are those using specific registration systems that require IE. Specifically, travel agencies the like require IE.

My girlfriend works as an organizer, planner, and registration contact for the Jewish Community Center's Maccabi Games--Olympic games for Jewish teenagers. IÂ’m not techy enough to explain, but their database works only with IE.

For all other intents and purposes, Firefox is it.

Build a better mousetrap...

Firefox *used* to have issues with Flash ads causing pop-ups, that's not something that's solved by simply ignoring a piece of Javascript in a webdoc. But a workaround was found, I just don't recall if it was made standard-issue in the releases of Firefox that followed the solution.

It's not really a typical "pop-up" that he was referring to. By default, Firefox will make an error dialog appear (the kind you have to click "ok" on..) whenever it can't connect to a given site, as opposed to IE, which just displays the error as an HTML page within the browser.

I still get nearly no popups or spyware from common sites.

However... it's been a long time since I've looked for porn without torrents/etc. That's where you get the nasty crap, and with IE you get raped like mad.

Same old security is nothing more than limited userbase BS.

Certainly the userbase is part of it, but Firefox at least attempts to block popups out of the box. I haven't used IE for a couple years, but last time I checked it would let anything popup, any file be installed in the background, and let spyware infest your machine.

There's a new Firefox release like every month, and they continue to attempt to improve security/popupblocking functions.

You're running Windows? Oh, well that explains it. All Windows-based PCs act differently for what appears to be no reason at all.

I really just use Windows for gaming, and surf and work on Mac and (soon) some flavor of Linux.

A. Wow, a whole thread of people complaining about popups, and no one actually thought to look up the solution. Go to about:config and set privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins to 2. Mozilla is very public about these things if you know where to look.

B. If Firefox is crashing, something is wrong. Either an extention is screwing things up or your profile is corrupted, or something is wrong. The only reason Firefox 1.0x should crash is if you're using the hidden tab options that are known to be unstable (which is why they're hidden). If your Firefox is crashing it's time to stop complaining and time to start troubleshooting. You'll feel better when it's fixed, trust me.

it blocks most popups but when i go to gaming-age's main page, that popup keeps popping up :(

other than that, firefox has crashed on me at least twice. it'll eat away my bookmarks, or tell me i need to make up a new profile or some bs, and stuff like that. no problems lately, though if it eats my bookmarks again (has twice before, on diff. computers), it's time to switch.

Don't get all pissy, Matlock. True, some popups slip through it's said to be super-l33t popup protection, but if you're fed up, you can ALWAYS go back to IE! :D

Ahh, thanks. :)

I still only use FF mainly for being able to have two deviantART accounts (one main, and one for a club) without having to keep logging in and out to switch accounts. FF loads my main account, and IE loads the club thing.

Not a single pop-up ads on my end since i'm using AOL 9.0 SE with IE 6.

Except for planetgamecube and ign. Their ad pops up and ask you to skip it. It's not a hassle though. That's the only thing i get from them.

Bought it for $25 over two years ago and it's paid for itself dozens of times over.

LOL... I was the one who originally told you about that. Ironically enough I don't use it anymore (reloaded, couldn't find my registration code). But I haven't had a problem with popups but my browsing habits are..... good).

there's a form on the website where you can get the code emailed to you again, I forget the particulars but it worked for me.
