Maybe not, but it's one of the few Switch 2 games that's gonna actually be on the cart, so I will support it.

Never got far in the original version, so hopefully they iron out some of the flaws it had.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed in how wonky the controls felt overall.

The original was dreadful to play. Nintendo (and specifically Miyamoto) spent over a year simply refunding the controls and mechanics of Mario 64 before they ever started designing a single level, and you can feel that. 3D Mario games are just a joy to play and control at the most base level.

Yooka Laylee felt like shit the moment I tried it. If they're able to fix that, I might give it another shot.

Comparatively, the 2.5D Yooka Laylee game felt solid, and that was an enjoyable game.

You need to go back and replay Mario 64. I love the game, and it was amazing at the time. But compared to modern 3D games it controls like absolute dogshit.

Even at the time I remember the flying cap special cap stage to be borderline unplayable.

Dat music!

I am very disappointed that they changed the dialogue text boxes. They were obviously made like that to establish continuity with the Banjo games in the original. The new ones are just your usual micro-size-font text boxes.

YL was painfully mid. Having to revisit levels was somewhat of a chore, and many objectives weren't clear. And yeah, the camera was often bad. Especially when flying, where it was coupled with really terrible controls.

Anyway, I'm mildly interested in the remake (screw that title though, it sucks).
YL and the Impossible Lair was a masterpiece. It's essentially DK Country 4 with a different skin. Highly recommended.

I've beaten Mario 64 over 500 times (mostly speed running), and beat it like 6 times this year alone. It's my favorite game of all time. It's not as smooth controlling as something like Odyssey, but it still controls better than virtually every non-Mario 3D platformer made in the last 30 years.

Janky camera? Definitely. But the raw mechanics of Mario are sublime. Granted, I have thousands of hours in that game, so I'm pretty familiar with any of the weird isms it might have. But there's a reason it's the number 1 most speedran game ever.

It wasn't as good as either Banjo 1 or Tooie, also in this day and age you are used to better mechanics and game design, bring it to 1998 and mnaybe it'll contend Banjo kazooie

better than dk and astro bot?

No, those are probably the only two exceptions I can think of that have base mechanics that feel better/more polished.

Why does the original look better 99% of the time in the comparison video in the OP?

Given that a lot of people were excited about the prospect of the original game, but let down by the results, wouldn't that make it a perfect candidate for a remake?

I would rather that devs remake games that fell short of their potential than have them just repeatedly slop a new coat of paint on a game that was already great.

Now granted, this game might still disappoint, but as someone who was interested in the original until the reviews started coming in, this at least has my attention.

How many times do these type of games need to be remastered/remade and flop, to get it through to the dev no amount of re-releasing it is going to change people's minds.

YL was ok but a little janky and nowhere near as good as Banjo. Impossible Lair was fantastic though.

I want to give this remake a chance just because Impossible Lair was so good. Maybe Playtonic was able to fix it up.

just a warning for people who are looking at the Switch 2 version. at least the demo ran like absolute shit on Steam Deck, which doesn't bode well for Switch 2

YL and IL were both well optimized for Switch 1, I'd be surprised if Playtonic released the Switch 2 version of Replaylee in a bad state.

the second one, yeah ok... that was surprisingly well made. but the original Yooka Laylee wasn't well optimised on anything. it ran like absolute shit on every system it released on.

I'm sorry, but a game that looks worse than Conker Live & Reloaded did on og Xbox, running at 30fps, is not a well optimised game. and it wasn't even 100% locked either.
you can say it ran comparatively well. considering how awful all the other versions were, the the Switch 1 version was surprisingly not a disaster.

all I'm saying is, that PC demo didn't give a good first impression on the performance and technical makeup of the game.

I think maybe we just have different tolerances for 30fps. Maybe I'm misremembering but I thought YL held 30fps fairly well, with only occasional dips. I wouldn't call it awful or disastrous performance. I agree it's not a great looking game. Also I think Conker L&R looks great, the visuals have held up well.

If the PC demo was that bad then hopefully Playtonic can fix it.

Cautiously optimistic about this. I never liked the original that much for reasons already outlined by others here. I adore The Impossible Lair, though, and would've preferred a sequel to that instead. But hey, maybe I'll check this out.
