on Netflix US

Absolutely horrifying. The only comparison I could make is if the the leaders of Nazi death camps were still alive today and heralded by the government as heroes and by the people as celebrities. The film is just surreal...its one thing to have warlords in Africa, its another for an organized government to be openly supporting gangsters and leaders of genocide as a means of governing.

EDIT: If there was ever an argument for violence in the media inspiring psychopaths...this is it

I work at a movie theater and only saw bits and pieces of it when we were playing it, but yeah, it's some rough stuff. I've been meaning to catch the full film now that it's on Netflix.

Someone recommended me to watch this last month and I completely forgot - thanks for the reminder even though I still don't have time to watch it.

So if I'm understanding this right, this guy is a real war criminal who was approached by this documentary producer to recreate his crimes in the form of a movie, which he subsequently watches when it's complete and is disturbed by what he sees?

Pretty interesting concept.

Absolutely astounding movie. I couldn't stop thinking about for for months after watching it.

I still can't, as a matter of fact.

The fact that this entire debacle was sanctioned and paid for by the US is extremely eye opening.

Is this really graphic in nature as in it shows killings ?

Graphic in the sense that these murderers truly think they were getting rid of communist scum, and are almost convinced they are heroes. They gleefully reenact beheadings, and give tips on it. Very interesting film, but its not really gore. They are actually making a movie about themselves, so thats as far as the gore goes.. with amazing special fx like;

Its a very eye opening film.

The Alamo Drafthouse = best in the business. Their Drafthouse Films unit really has acquired and released some incredible films. I am hopeful that this wins the Oscar to give it (both the film and the practice it depicts) further recognition.

Can any of this be used to convict them as a confession?

Sure, if the extremist right-wing government that rules the country either dissolves or decides that instead of lauding these assholes as national heroes they classify them as war criminals.

You really need to watch this to understand just how horrifying that country was and still is.

it looks interesting, but im not really sure if i wanna watch it, my stomach could probably handle it, but im not sure my soul could.

There are so many odd moments in this film.....its the pinnacle of gang culture, the horrible finale of gang violence where the gangsters extort and kill and are heralded for it and become rich off of it

EDIT: "We must exterminate them, but in a humane way"...jeezus

Excellent documentary, absolutely bizarre story.

Can any of this be used to convict them as a confession?

It's not as if the killings, or who took part in them, are any secret. The government is quite open about its involvement with the communist massacres and its association with the gangsters who carried out the executions. Guys like Anwar are publicly treated as national heroes for it. For any of these things to be considered crimes or confessions would require a completely different regime with completely different laws.

dont worry, we have drone strikes that keeps us far away from the bloody brutality of murder. It's all numbers now. Can'[t wait to watch this movie though

Probably one of the most surreal films I have ever seen. Might make someone think twice about watching Sopranos or any other 'gangster' type film but then again...

I'm actually watching it right no and have to constantly remind myself this really happened.

One of the most surreal documentaries I've everseen.

It was interesting. But I am not sure what I am fully supposed to get from it...

I guess it is the point of the film. But it is frustrating to not know the truth of the situation.
Was he really conflicted? They seem to know they are the "bad guys". Yet they have so much pride over what they did...

I think the point is to show us the audience at how delusional these people are they fully believe in what they are doing, was the right thing, and that they want to celebrate it. But more importantly to show what can come from a government who support corruption, not to mention they keep thinking they are "free men" throughout, which they seem to think it justifies their actions.

It's an entire country in the throes of cognitive dissonance.

They know exactly what they did and their involvement in the torture and executions of millions of people, but either:

a) justify to it themselves as a necessary evil to get rid of communists
b) try to shut it out, consciously or subconsciously
c) don't care

I watched this the other day. The ending made me nearly throw up. Everyone should watch it.

heh,
Anwar definitely has the most awful sounding gag reflex

Probably the most mindblowing documentary I've ever seen. The most chilling bits are when it's left to your imagination.

The teddy bear scene, my god...

The people in this documentary act in a way that is so far removed from reality it is hard to believe it's all real. But it is all real. Disgusting mass murderers still glorified by the public and their government. Probably the best film I saw in 2013.

Just watched it. Not really a good documentary nor did it affect me. Subtitles were really hard to read too.

You scare me.

I thought it was a little bit boring to be honest.
Thought it would be several different murderers doing reenactments, but it was just these two ones walking on the streets talking for two hours.*

* not really but it felt like it.

A masterpiece. Disturbing how much their methods were influenced by Hollywood films.

Both violence, and.. style.

I admit, it really did hit home while watching. The are literally saying XYZ movies influenced them, without batting an eye. And if these guys exist, and we know their story, just think of those that we are totally oblivious to.

Watching Anwar Congo go from a headstrong communist exterminator to a depressed wreck of a man that was genuinely remorseful for and haunted by his crimes was a pretty powerful transformation. Especially when he spent five minutes
dry heaving
