You can opt out of Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card and use the existing game sharing system instead

For now anyway.

The current system is the same as the PlayStation and Xbox implementation.

This system is not a requirement. You can opt back into the old system.

Right now, here’s how I share Switch games with my kid. My account is logged into her Switch and my Switch. My daughter’s Switch, where she also has her own account, is the “primary,” which means she can download and play games seamlessly.

My Switch is the “non-primary” Switch, which the internet is required to “authenticate” playing my games. I can connect to my phone to do this, and it only becomes a problem when I forget to do this before a flight. Only slightly annoying.

In the presentation, Nintendo notes this:

By navigating to User Settings → Online-License Settings and turning the setting to ON, you can instead opt to connect to the internet to start up software.
If you liked how the old system worked, it seems you can keep doing it that way.

“We think many people will enjoy the benefits of virtual game card, but it is an optional feature, and the original method can be used instead,” said a Nintendo spokesperson.

What would be really great is an ability to transfer a digital license. For example, when kids got their Switch Lites, I put my own account on them. I redeemed Animal Crossing with it. Months later I realize they need their own account, I created both, but the saves are stuck on my account, and Animal Crossing as well. I have to buy the game again for my daughter.

In summary : DIGITAL SUCKS.

Your daughter can play your digital copy of AC on her account if you make her Switch your primary Switch. Only works for a 2nd Switch tho aka only 1 of your kids.

But yeah digital kind of sucks. I don't buy digital with Nintendo 1st party ...mostly because of resale value but also often cheaper initial buy in price.

Yeah, the game was a "pack in" with the console.

That's good.
Unless you specifically want the lending system, the new system sounded overall worse.

The only knock of the new system compared to the old is it gets rid of the workaround that allows 2 Switches to play the same game at the same time?
