You can watch Spider-Man (2002) full frame 35mm (Open Matte Version) on Youtube

Tag, you're it.
This movie doesn't age

Basically, every movie is cropped (because reasons) and sometimes the studios release the Full Frame version:

And I just found that this version is available directly on Youtube (don't know for how long). If you wanna take a look, it's the perfect time !

I don't think that's the same as open matte
The red line represents open matte
This looks like the full 35mm film
But Spider-Man is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio so I guess it is open matte in this case.

Nice find either way.

Nice find, you could make a drinking game out of "Spot the mike hanging into the frame" though.
This is what surprised me about movies. In college I was able to buy a couple of theatrical prints and a projector from a local theater that closed and auctioned some unopened storage boxes. The one that got me was Jurassic Park. You could see microphones in every shot, Even the scenes that were completely CG.

why does it surprise you? they are shot intending to be cropped.

I had no idea that the theatrical version was cropped compared to widescreen DVD, which was what was fairly new at the time. I bought the boxes for almost nothing and was expecting popcorn supplies and candy, not a handful of films and a newish projector. It was a pleasant surprise!

I love the bits in the 16:9 version of Firefly where Tudyk is just pretending to hold a yoke because they were gonna crop it to 4:3.

Yeah, youtube is great. But if you want to own a physical copy, you can buy the full screen DVD of this used for practically nothing. And lots of other movies from that era. They're not always the full gate. Sometimes it's just 1.85 that's been cropped. Sometimes they go in-between (crop a little on the sides, open up a little more on top and bottom).

Never knew films were filmed on wider shots where you could see the crew and then trimmed down to a size. Makes sense though, but never really thought of it.

I'm surprised why these kinds of prints would be out in the public. Youd think they would be locked up at the studio's head office/warehouse and not be out in the wild.

We had a movie theater close in a neighboring town and they liquidated everything. There were so many boxes in the lobby that were for auction. You were not allowed to touch the boxes in any way and most auctions ended for under $10. A few of the films I received were incomplete as a reel or two were missing; probably in other auctioned off boxes. I always imagined that these were supposed to be returned to the distributor at one point, but the owners just didn't do it.

I don't know about the technicalities of the presentation, but I ended up watching the entire movie. Still a great movie, thank you. :)

i can't stand marvel bullshit these days but this was a good spiderman movie. probably the only one i've enjoyed. also i remember having a huge crush on kirsten dunst.

Interesting thing here. I just compared this version to my blu-ray.
They must have been filming with two cameras in slightly different positions simutaneously. The shots are different in this version versus what's on the blu-ray. The angles don't match up in identical frames. I don't think they're alternate takes because the performances and body positions are undifferentiated.
