No contrast, everything is just overly bright and colorful to the point of looking like a damn Disney movie. Where's the grime, where's the soot and the dirt? They messed with the color grading when no one asked them to and the end result is the lighting is completely devoid of style or direction. They just slapped on RT without worrying about scene composition or how inaccurate shadows can still add some much needed flair and atmosphere to a scene.

This is a big problem across all of media. A lot of people pointed this out comparing shots of Devil Wears Prada and the sequel. The sequel looks like a made for TV movie from the 1990s, just everything lit very flat and evenly, no contrast, no staging, no use of shadows to emphasize different parts of the scene, just light that shit up. Apparently this cancer has infested games.

Yep:

Where is contrast?! Someone has to play God of War 3 on PS4/PS5, game looks incredible for a SDR game - eye porn when it comes to color and contrast.

As for the lighting, I wonder if part of it's that they just completely excluded the sails from the raytracing in these cutscenes. Those are obviously meant to be the source of the shadows in the original.

This doesn't bother me that much, since a good reshade preset can fix the color/lighting choice differences (worked for Oblivion remake's shit sepia filter), and still keep the areas where they upped fidelity as a benefit.

Will wait and see if it gets worse in other areas as they show more.

I couldn't stand playing that video game for 30 minutes...

It felt really tedious and boring. And it's supposed to be the best Assassin's Creed game.

2026 looks better, IMO.

Although I wouldn't play it without finishing the original at least once.
Sure, better models, better textures, hair, etc. However, the light/shadow composition looks awful. There's no reason to have completely butchered the color grading.

I like the og Black Flag a lot, but I think the best one's still Assassin's Creed 2. Other than making the models more high poly, wouldn't change a thing about that game

Hot take: There is no good Assassin's Creed game, this is why I almost skipped all them.

I wouldn't mind good Pirate game but zero interest playing Assassin's Creed game.

Won't this look better with HDR?

This is RTGI, some stuff will definitely look like this whereas other stuff will look far far better than prebaked stuff or other rudimentary lightening techniques.

IMO if the game runs fluid and fast these small details hardly will matter, no one player is stopping, zooming in and analysing shadows amidst naval battles or similar high action sequences.

That's right, my friend...

I actually tried playing three Assassin's Creed games.

The first one when it was first released... I didn't like that "Matrix"-like premise at the time... Or maybe I had a different idea of the story... I stopped playing it because it didn't give me the freedom I needed.

Then I played Syndicate... But I got bored after two hours. I felt it was repetitive and the gameplay was limited, so I abandoned it and played Mad Max and MGS: The Phantom Pain.

And I thought... Okay, I'll go for the one I consider the best, or one of the best, and since it had a pirate theme, I went with Black Flag... And I got another surprise... I didn't like it either.

It seems the Assassin's Creed franchise isn't the kind of game I'll ever enjoy... I avoided Valhalla for the same reason.

I have this feeling of boredom, and it doesn't allow me to interact with the world the way I want.

The thing is that these shots are all from cutscenes. If your engine can't do real time cutscenes with good path traced lighting, maybe you should go back to pre-rendered cutscene video files.

I saw s(h)killup's recent video on it. Seemed decent enough tbh. Maybe these screen shots here were cherry picked? Or RT is not on or something? I don't like modern Ubi at all so I'm not defending them, just comparing to a video I saw of the game and graphics looked better than the old version.

the more I see the less interested I become this looks awful

Old version too dark. New version too bright.

The clothes in the old models looks much better. But by far the faces in the new game look much better. The old game had zombie eyeballs and oddly dark and angular faces. And new version has some nice additional background graphics while the original was a blank horizon.

Good catch, it seems the shadows of the sails are completely missing. Hopefully, they fix it by the game's release.

They weren't. Watch the entire video. It's short and shows the cutscenes side by side frame for frame.

You don't even need to zoom in. It's immediately obvious.

My biggest issue with Assassin Creed and most Ubisoft games is they incredibly dull and boring.

There is nothing offensively bad about them but there nothing great about them. I rather have heavily flawed but interesting game than playing a game that makes me feel nothing.

Glad I'm getting that Granblue Fantasy Relink Endless Ragnarok DLC instead. Currently upgrading my squad on a new save file in preparation for the DLC. Ubisoft can suck a big log while waiting for my money.

Yeah watched the video now and it does seem like shadows are missing here.

For the record I only dabbled in Ass creed 1 and 2, never reached the half way point as got bored. Played og Black Flag for less than 2 hours and bailed. So far from a fan.

After watching Skillup's video I did like how resynced was looking.

Black Flag only gets going when you're allowed to roam the open seas and go pirating, which takes a few hours to get to. The opening is a bit slow and not very fun.

That's just not true like at all, if you don't like them, that's fine, but that's another story.
And I'm saying this by being far from a Ubi or AC fan.

That different color tone is honestly the only thing I didn't like about the remake, maybe they'll fix it before launch or at least add an option to switch between filters or something? Hope so, if not, mods will probably resolve that anyway.

Other than that, from the comparison videos I've seen, this AC IV remake looks really damn good. Anyone saying it looks bad or somehow worse than the original either needs their eyes checked or just wants to hate on it because it's a Ubisoft game.

Ain't that just every smartphone camera these days? People seem to love it online.

On top of it losing its visual identity Kenway always looks so fuckin glaykit now, like he's hit the pipe after taking too much codeine.

If lighting isnt flat then its washed out and grey due to shite HDR/"filmic" tonemapping so much these days.

I'm playing The Talos Principle 2 right now and its such a pleasing presentation in SDR, so the great HDR elevates it even more. Croteam is one dev that really understands how to do these things correctly in a sea of mediocrity.

I think that to this day it's still the best Pirate game ever made. And it's been what, 20 years since the Remake?
I tried getting into it per many recommendations in a thread I made a few months ago. I just couldn't. The game is from 2004 but honestly felt like something from 1998. Maybe I should have given it more time, but I was expecting real combat and real ship battles à la Black Flag, but it's like half-strategy/management game, half-adventure game and I don't think it does either particularly well. You can't even go into towns to explore them for instance. There's also the fact that since it's from 2004, the tutorials come in a booklet, not in the game, so I had to look up online how to do a few of things and read about the different mechanics to understand the game. I played it for 2 hours and dropped it. Either it aged really badly or it just isn't for me.
