Your top 10 favorite Joe and Cobra action figures.

Yeah, that's right people… ACTION. FIGURES. Not characters, as seen in the comics and cartoons; if I did say that, then I'm pretty damn sure nearly every response would end up listing the same group of Joes. No, I'm talking strictly about the action figures themselves, from the 3 ¾" A Real American Hero series that continues to this day (at least, until Sigma Six drops). I want to know the Joe/Cobra action figures that you liked best, or played with the most, or begged your mom for days to let you have, or felt was the coolest or coolest-looking, or had the best accessories, or whatever. It's up to you to decide the criteria by which your list is made, but remember: action figures, not characters.

Please separate your lists by Joe/Cobra alliance. Also, you don't have to list any "Honorable Mentions" or vehicles if you don't want to; it's okay to just do a "Top 5" of Joe/Cobra action figures. And finally, for characters that have had multiple versions over the years (Snake Eyes, for example, has had... what, 20 versions?), it might be best to give the specific version, or describe it well enough so that the rest of us know which one you're referring to.

Can't remember? Visit www.yojoe.com and let the nostalgia rush in! :)

Here's my list. I put a lot of thought into it, and I hope you do the same with yours.

---------------------------------------------------------

GI JOE
1. 2002 Snake Eyes / 1989 Snake Eyes - Hear me out for a sec, here. I know I said "pick figures, not characters;" but as my favorite character, Snake Eyes was THE Joe that I played with most. That said… the 2002 version is, IMO, the best Snake Eyes figure made to date. An incredible sculpt with lots of detail, spot-on paint scheme, tons of articulation (even ankles!), and a cool assortment of accessories. It just screams "Badass!" But I'm an adult now, and it's not the same as when I was a kid, and back then my favorite Snake Eyes was the '89 model. That one's design tied into an awesome storyline from the comic, and it came with some really great accessories. Plus I really liked that sword…

2. 1989 Stalker - Now this is a case of "most bang for your buck." If you'll scroll down on that link, you'll see… yeah, that's right… Stalker came with a kayak. A freakin' KAYAK! It even had a machine gun mounted on top. How awesome is that? I wasn't too keen on his weapons being white, but they still looked cool and they matched his outfit. Needless to say, Stalker and his boat spent a lot of time fighting naval battles in our house's bathtub.

3. 1987 Falcon - Forget about the cartoon version, forget about Don Johnson for a sec, and just look at the figure. For me, Falcon was a case of everything just… clicking, I guess. He sports a simple, functional, realistic design that worked with the military theme without being flashy or over the top. The shotgun - a rarity among Joes - easily fit into his hands, and the long handle meant it wouldn't fall out. The backpack was small, and featured a slot for his combat knife. In fact, the only bad part of his design was that antenna, which was EASILY lost within seconds of removing the figure from its packaging. Falcon just worked for me.

4. 1989 Rock 'n Roll - I had a hard time choosing between this guy and Repeater when making this list, but in the end, when it comes to heavy Joe firepower you've gotta go with Rock 'n Roll. Besides, Predator beats Alien right? Just look at this dude's accessories to see why I chose him: two belt-fed Gatling cannons with an ammo backpack, and a shotgun. Simply awesome, and a major upgrade from the M-60 he once sported. Jesse Ventura, eat your heart out.

5. 1988 Blizzard - Aaaaaaand I bet you're all saying, "Who?" right about now. I must admit, even to me this is an oddball choice. But of all the snow Joes, Blizzard was my favorite for two reasons: those spiked snow shoes, and that backpack. Because the spiked shoes fit most Joes (I usually put them on Snake Eyes), and the backpack became a rocket sled when assembled. Cool features, and the figure didn’t look too bad either. No ski poles, but just a great combination of accessories and figure.

Honorable Mentions: 1984 Spirit (cool accessories, eagle companion, great design… except for the ponytails), 1988 Hit & Run (awesome accessories, realistic weapons, crappy paint scheme), 1986 Sci Fi (futuristic design, neon green suit, crappy accessories)

---------------------------------------------------------

COBRA
1. 1989 Night Viper - How's that for a #1, eh? This guy came near the end of my GI Joe days, yet he fast became my favorite Cobra figure ever; in fact, I often disregarded his status as a Cobra and sided him with the Joes on my play adventures. He's got a great paint scheme, cool design, an awesome helmet feature w/ the night vision goggles, and his weapon can be affixed to his leg! I used to load this guy up with weapons, turn out the lights in my room, and let him loose on the unsuspecting Cobra ranks… not unlike a certain stealthy videogame character of today.

2. 1984 Storm Shadow - Don't worry, I'm not disregarding my own rules… Storm Shadow was a great character, to be sure, but he was also one of my favorite figures to play with. From a design standpoint, he was probably the most interesting of the early Cobras, and the fact that he was a ninja didn't hurt either. But what really puts him over is his accessories. Two Japanese swords, a bow, nunchuks… and one of the best backpacks EVER. Not only was it unique looking, it held every one of Storm Shadow’s weapons and looked cool doing it. Incredible design. I just wish he had come with a claw like the 1988 "good" version.

3. 1989 Alley Viper - Ah, the Alley Viper. Clean design, not so keen on the paint deco, but just take a look at those accessories! Cool-looking backpack, a functional helmet device (blast shield!), wicked looking assault rifle, and a SHIELD! Now, other GI Joe characters in the past have had shields, but this one… this one worked, and it fit the character.

4. 1987 Croc Master - Just look at him. Black mask, reptile skin clothes, big yellow eye on the belt buckle… it works well with his schtick, doesn't it? Plus, he's the only (?) GI Joe character to come with a whip, which for Indiana Jones fans like me was a big plus. What else am I forgetting? Oh yes… AN ALLIGATOR! He came with an alligator! Now maybe it's just me, because I’m from Louisiana, but any action figure with a freakin' alligator on a leash is tops in my book.

5. 1986 BATs - Heh. I ended up getting about 5 of these before my mother caught on to what I was doing and told me "no more, mister." And what I was doing was building an army of cannon fodder for my Joes to mow down, with these wonderful little droids. I mean, you had to get a bunch of them anyway, to recreate the cartoon battles… and because those little arm attachments kept getting lost.

Honorable Mentions: 1983 Destro (cool design, silver head, crappy accessories), 1986 Viper (best Cobra footsoldier, crappy accessories), 1990 Rock Viper (awesome backpack, big honkin' sniper rifle, crappy design)

---------------------------------------------------------

VEHICLES/PLAYSETS
1. 1986 HAVOC - If you didn't have one of these in your GI Joe collection as a kid, then you either didn't really love GI Joe or you were just plain unlucky. This was THE vehicle to have, and with good reason. The HAVOC looked incredibly cool, had a ton of features, was bristling with weaponry, could accommodate a small army of Joes, and best of all had a hidden hovercraft docked inside! Plus it came with Cross Country, who along with Wild Bill is one of the Joe’s best vehicle drivers ever. This thing was, as the young kids say today, DA BOMB.

2. 1982 VAMP / 1982 RAM - I know I'm cheating a bit by putting these two together, but mentioning one without the other would be an injustice. These were the first two Joe vehicles that I ever had, and in all the years that followed they still remained a favorite at playtime. That kind of longevity says a lot about them, IMO. They were the ultimate light-attack vehicles for the Joe team, the perfect blend of design, simplicity, and durability. That last one is especially true; whereas the later motorcycle (1985 Silver Mirage) would easily come apart, the RAM was one tough sonovab*tch.

3. 1986 Conquest X-30 - I've got a feeling that a lot of people are going to question this one, or cite the Skystriker as their favorite, but for my money the Conquest was the best Joe fighter aircraft ever made. Why, you ask? Because the Skystriker was too fragile, had too many moving parts to lose or break, and was just too damn big to handle for my small child's frame. By comparison, the Conquest was smaller, more solidly constructed, had fewer moving parts, carried a comparable level or armament, and was easier to maneuver than the Skystriker. That puts it over on my list, easily. Plus, Slipstream just looked better than Ace.

4. 1987 Mobile Command Center - For several years I had been begging my parents to buy me a playset for my Joes, and when the Defiant made its debut they finally caved… by buying me the MCC instead. No matter; this enormous, three-tiered mobile base soon became the centerpiece of my Joe collection, and the focal point of my play adventures. And why wouldn't it? It's no aircraft carrier, but it's still pretty freakin' big, and unlike that monstrosity you can fold it up into a cool battle vehicle. There was even a bay on the ground level to park my VAMP, and a prison to hold Cobra Commander.

5. 1983 HISS Tank / 1983 FANG Chopper - This pair makes my list for the same reasons as the RAM and VAMP. They were the first Cobra vehicles I obtained, and they remained a favorite for years. Simple, functional, durable designs, without a lot of the hassles or fancy crap that they insisted on adding to future vehicles. They just worked, and even at that tender young age I could appreciate that sometimes, simple is best.

Honorable Mentions: 1990 Cobra Hammerhead (last GI Joe vehicle I ever bought), 1984 Water Moccassin (best GI Joe water-based vehicle, liked it so much I bought another one years later), 1986 Cobra Terrordrome (best GI Joe playset EVER, too bad I didn’t own one), 1986 Air Chariot w/ Serpentor (only way to get Serpentor, flimsy construction)

---------------------------------------------------------

So there you go. Have fun! :D

Yo Joe!!

1. Snake-Eyes 1985 - The best Snake-Eyes ever. Simple, dim colors, nothing too silverish or neon, plus it comes with Timber.

2. Shipwreck 1985 - The Han Solo of GI Joe, plus it came with Polly. The only bummer was that his weapon was crap.

3. Barbecue 1985 - Iloved action figures that wore masks, plus it helped that he came with all those cool accessories like the hose and ax. I used to imagine that he carried a flame thrower to burn Cobras.

4. Tunnel Rat 1987 - I liked the use of color in his clothing and the camo, like he was sneaky, plus he had a big freaking machine gun. I also liked him in the movie.

5. Quick Kick 1985 - I loved all the ninjas and martial artists(well at least most of them).

Cobraaaaaa!!

1. Firefly 1985 - Another awesome looking character. I liked his outfit plus to me he was like a ninja, except it was a ninja the sneaked around and placed bombs and destroyed stuff.

2. Storm Shadow 1988 - Sure, this is the good guy Storm Shadow but fuck that, he'll always be Cobra 4 Life plus it looks better than his first toy.

3. Tomax/Xamot 1985 - The twins. I used to play with them thinking they were the Double Dragons and the Dreadnoks were the street thugs with Road Pig as Abobo, good times.

4. Cobra Commander 2002 - I got him with the black & silver Snake-Eyes, and it's the best C.C. figure since the original.

5. Destro 1983 - One of the first GI Joes I got. Sure his head was freaking big but he was badass, plus I had to had him with Cobra Commander.

I loved the hell out of my skystriker, though looking back you make a lot of good points. one of my tail fins ended up snapping - I was crushed. then I threw ace and his parachute over the balcony a few hundred times. that never got old.

vehicles:

1) snowcat
2) skystriker
3) skyhawk (iirc, my very first joe toy)
4) dragonfly
5) H.I.S.S. (or, the destromobile!)
6) water moccasin
7) F.A.N.G.
8) the night raven (my brother had this one, and he dueled my skystriker. I would always use my hand to knock off the piggybacked escape plane. he would then cry to mom.)

my friend had a bridgelayer - we had a heck of a time trying to make that thing fun somehow.

another friend had a killer whale, and that was the first time I ever experienced jealousy.

good thread!

I'm basing this off of who I thought looked coolest as a kid, and who I always picked to have on my team before starting a game of GI Joe.

JOES

1. Barbecue (1985) - My favorite GI Joe as a kid. I thought he looked really cool.
2. Hit & Run (1988)
3. Snake Eyes Snake Eyes (1985) - coolest looking Snake Eyes IMO
4. Air Tight (1985)
5. Tunnel Rat (1990) - once I took off the enormous backpack

COBRAS

1. Snow Serpent (1985)
2. Viper (1986)
3. Techno Viper (1987)
4. Zandar (1986)
5. Crimson Guard (1985)

As for vehicles, I totally agree that the HAVOC rocks. I also liked the Snow Cat, Ferret, Hydrofoil, Devilfish, Thunder Machine, STUN, Maggot, Thunderclap, and Mobile Battle Bunker.

Did anyone ever get to play with that aircraft carrier?

That was perhaps the coolest toy ever made from what I remember of the pictures.

My cousin had one. Hence my pestering of mom and dad for a Joe playset of my own... you know, jealousy. I never really got to play with it, though, because we never stayed at their place long enough to set up a battle, and because of its size it was too big to bring when they visited us. It occupied an entire wall of his room, and he kept most of his vehicles - land, sea, and air - set up on or around it. It was really quite a sight.

Wow, I would have had my parents adopt my cousin if he had the aircraft carrier. Wasn't the carrier a hundred dollars when they still sold it? I think I got a Voltron for around that price (worth every penny!), but my parents didn't get it for me. They didn't think a kid should have toys that were that expensive.

Man, I can just imagine the battle setup with that carrier. That brings me back. I remember setting up some rooms for hours just to have a battle with my friends. The setting up took longer then the battles and was more fun. Of course, we tried to make each battle bigger and more impressive and by the end every damn action figure we had was making an appearance. In the end the Decepticons and Autobots were getting involved in the battle against COBRA.

:lol :lol :lol

I did that too! Joes and Autobots on one side of the living room, Cobra and Decepticons on the other. My friends or cousins would come over to play, and it'd take about 2 hours to set up a battle, meticulously equipping and arranging each figure and vehicle in our armies. Then... maybe 5-10 minutes to demolish the whole thing.

It was great. :D

I had the carrier, but I mostly used it as a racing strip. I remember having a blue Cobra quad bike and the Joe mini tank with the 4 cannons and I slid them from one end of the carrier to the other until they crashed on the floor.

I also had the huge, brown land vehicle that looks like a Jawa Sandcrawler and opened up in 3 sections.

Were my parents right? Did you turn out rotten from having such aa awesomely expensive toy?

Not really, I got it for my kindergarten graduation. I got home from the ceremony and there was the huge box sitting on my room along with Footlose, Roadblock, Spirit and one of those green hover helicopters that didn't have the helixes. I literally cried myself to sleep and put it together the next morning.

I turned out alright, I guess.

Iron Grenadiers get no love?

I had an army of B.A.T.S and Iron Grenadiers thanks to my liberal abuse of sticker swapping at a local store as a kid. I believe I was paying around 99¢ or so for my Joes. :X

Alley Vipers were pretty hot too in a totally whack color scheme Super Soaker way.

Actually I managed to swindle a bunch of Alley Vipers that way too. :lol

no Eels or Snow Serpents? for figures with accesories, those guys guys were it!

best of course is Snake Eyes 1985,
Crimson Guard is a close second.

What happened? Peace-loving hippie parents wouldn't let you guys play with army men, just morphing robots and mutant reptiles? Come on, there's gotta be more Joe fans in the ranks of GAF than this.

Sorry, I'm late. I've had my toys standing around for awhile but i just took pictures of them today. Didn't take any pictures of the originals to compare to the new because I'm just too lazy to take out my old figures. Besides, the new Hasbro has seriously outdone the old Hasbro in every way except the amount of figures released. Considering the great news that Hasbro will continue the 3 3/4 line as a direct to collectors online site for new figures (instead of that hiatus everyone was up in arms about) maybe the new Hasbro line will surpass the old line in bulk.

Anyway, I was never a big Joe fan. Since I started buying GI Joes way back in 1986 I always bought Cobra figures almost exclusively. I loved how Cobra's ranks were made up of faceless soldiers in awesome looking uniforms and gear, so i started "army building" (buying multiples of the same figure) way back then. My younger brother would buy the Joes and we would have massive battles with hundreds of figures.
I don't have any favorite Joes, just Cobras.

Click on the name to see a close up of my figure(s). Seeing them without their weapons and gear on them is pretty lame, so i won't use yojoe.

cobragroup.JPG

My most favorite is Firefly (kneeling). I love the idea of mercenaries and a bomb expert even more... plus, his costume kicks ass. Simple, yet awesome. This new improved mold doesn't have goofy eyes, more facial features show through the masks and comes with an improved paint scheme.

Then there's the Cobra Officers/Infantry (two guys behind Firefly). The first faceless Cobra soldiers that I could kill and still have more of when I played with my brother. These new improved models are exactly the same as the originals except with superior detail.

The Alley Viper (far right) became my favorite soldier once they came out. A kick ass shock trooper with heavy armoring and awesome design. I have about 20 of them in every incarnation total. This is the second version (sixth paint scheme) and my favorite. It's much much better than that shitacular third version that Hasbro released last year (http://www.yojoe.com/action/04/alleyviper8.shtml). It's not a real fucking Alley Viper without a fucking visor and a fucking shield!

Next is Croc Master (far left) who was in charge of all Cobra Secruity in all the Cobra bases
that my brother's Joes would infiltrate. He got heavy use almost everytime we played. He'd usually be in the back ordering nameless/faceless Cobras to their deaths. I really love this version because he looks meaner than the original.

And then there's the much needed Tele-Viper (next to Croc Master) who is almost always by the side of the squad leader (Croc Master or a named Cobra) to call in for reinforcements. Again, Hasbro has improved on the original, which had a gigantic pumpkin head.

Oh, and Hasbro rocks for finally adding the figures i ALWAYS WANTED!
THE OKTYABR GUARD!!

And a random [fuzzy] picture of the first black Cobra figure.

Not GI Joe related, but I really love these Microman figures. I bought these last year at the San Diego Comic Con, and i wish i had bought more. I hope Takara brings more this year.

... but seriously, I got these from the San Diego Comic Con last year from Takara's booth. They were a Comic Con exclusive and they ran out on the third day. I managed to buy seven (at $5 each) and was ready to buy a dozen more (as soon as i found out how neat they looked posing with my GI Joes and using their guns) when I was saddened to see they ran out. =(

Like i said above in my previous post, i hope they do something like this again because these figures ROCK! Way better than their regular Microman line. Although, they did release an awesome Catwoman figure last year and their Sakura and Chun Li figures for this year look awesome too.

And I'm pretty serious about that $100, because that's the only way I'm going to part with my seventh and last Trainer figure. They were selling on ebay for around $12 though last time i checked (August). The only thing i can find on Ebay right now is for a lot Comic Con exclusive and its set at $60 "Buy now" http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=49018&item=5971092118&rd=1

OOOOO!!!

I always wondered who funds Cobra?? I mean naturally GI Joe gets it's budget from Uncle Sam. But how does Cobra afford trillion dollars worth of death dealing military hardware?

Telemarketing.
Pyramid schemes.
Selling used cars (Cobra Commander's job before setting Cobra up).
And good ol' blackmailing and extortion.

They also have legitimate businesses set up by the Freds or CEEGEES (Crimson Guards).

Royalties from "Cold Slither" = big $$$. :D

Cobra had a bunch of side operations to fund their terrorist schemes. Not very realistically, I mean, but it's a cartoon so who cares? They were dealing arms and advanced technology to rogue nations and dictatorships, stealing gold from depositories and priceless artwork from museums and private collections, and had financial backing from the dastardly enemies of America and freedom. Plus, IIRC Cobra Commander was a slick businessman who started a number of worldwide companies under the ARBOC banner.

And didn't they get Cobra Island declared a sovereign nation in the comics?

Yep, they had their expert Crimson Guard lawyers go to every major country's consulate to declare their country.

And again, to give an idea how Cobra makes their money... from the Journal of a New COBRA Recruit http://www.mcsweeneys.net/2002/01/02cobra.html

"June 20, 1986
Real boring day. I was all ready for some more physical training, but instead Sarge led us into a room full of phones and made us cold-call people and ask them if they wanted to switch their long distance to COBRA. During the break, Renfro asked Sarge when we became a long-distance provider. Sarge explained that we had to do something to make money if we were going to afford a private army with hundreds of tanks and planes and a Terrordome, not to mention all the expenses from the Serpentor genetic engineering project. Working the phones was demoralizing, and people were usually pretty mad when we called them, but it felt good to be doing my duty for COBRA. In between calls, I amused myself by thinking of cool one-liners I could say if I ever got the drop on one of those G.I. Joe bums."

heh heh .I was a spoiled G.I.Joe nut . Had the U.S.S. Flagg, the space shuttle, about 30 vehicles and around 250 figures. Gave it all away, kicking myself now.

anyways:10- Blowtorch
9-Snow Serpant
8- Firefly
7- Zartan
6- Mutt & Junkyard
5- Destro version 1
4- Cobra Commander Steel face
3- Cobra commander hooded
2- Stormshadow Version 1
1- Snake-eyes 2 with timber (loved the sword with this one)

250 figures?!? Damn, you were spoiled. Lucky bastard. O_O

Oh, but you gave it all away. Poor bastard. :lol

Actually, that brings up something else I was curious about besides your favorites (and it provides an excuse to give this thread another chance at life...). How big was your GI Joe collection when you were a kid? While I was making this thread, going through all of the figures and vehicles pictured on www.yojoe.com, I started keeping an inventory of my collection as well. Here's what I came up with: 127 to 135 action figures (I can't remember how many duplicates I had, mainly Cobra grunts), and 35 vehicles and playsets.

Does that mean I was spoiled?

luxsol

Member
As a kid, my collection was close to 300 figures, probably around 280. I only had about 10 vehicles because I didn't seriously get into GI Joes until 89 when i started reading the comic books.

My collection today remains about the same even though I've bought dozens of the new figures in the past few months (along with many many older ones), because a lot of my older figures have snapped in half from rotten rubber bands. I could repair many of them, but some have screws so rusted it'll be impossible to open them up. =\
