I can tell you that Garou Mark of the wolves and Dead or Alive 2 are pretty much my favorite fighting games in general though.

Hmm.. I don't put much time into fighters at all, and especially not 2D ones.. haven't played any of the new SF games for years. So here's my list (you may laugh, I'm ok with it):

2D
All of the below are the SNES versions (with exception of Eternal Champions of course):

5: Eternal Champions
4: Street Fighter 2
3: Mortal Kombat 1
2: Mortal Kombat 2
1: Mortal Kombat 3 (these two may be interchangeable)

3D

5: Virtua Fighter 4 for PS2, I guess.. can't think of any other 3D fighters I enjoyed a decent bit
4: Virtua Fighter (Saturn)
3: Soul Calibur II (GCN)
2: Soul Calibur (DC)
1: Virtua Fighter 2 (Saturn)

I'm basing this on the amount of time spent playing these games in most cases, so while I listed SF2 iand KOF '98 in my top 5, I don't play them much any more compared to SF3 and KOF 2002.

Regarding the 3D fighters, there really is no 3D fighter that I've EVER spent as much time playing as I have with any 2D fighter.

Also looking at my picks, my system of choice for fighting games would definitely be a modded Xbox.

It's debatable whether or not its a fighter, but my favorite overall is actually Bushido Blade 2. I would rather have a true ( not Kengo) Bushido Blade 3 than any other versus combat game ever. I also loved Eretzvaju/Evil Zone because it was all about strategy, not combo moves.
