YouTube ads will become unskippable

YouTube viewers watching on TVs may soon have to sit through even longer ads, with Google rolling out new 30-second unskippable spots on its television app.

The change means some ads that previously allowed users to skip after a few seconds will instead run the full half-minute with no option to bypass them except for subscribing to YouTube Premium.

According to Google, the update is aimed specifically at YouTube's TV experience, where viewing habits more closely resemble traditional television. Google says the longer ad format is designed to help advertisers reach audiences who are watching content in a more relaxed, living-room setting.

Hahahaha, motherfuckers. I guess my beloved Brave will save me from this bullshit, too bad my mother watches a lot of youtube on her tv...

I rarely watch YouTube on my TV, but when I do it's an ad every ~7 minutes. It makes the whole thing unwatchable. I didn't think they could make it worse, yet here we are

Their practices with ads are so greedy. One of my grandmas has advanced dementia, and the PSW would leave music playing on Youtube TV a lot of the time. Youtube must be able to sense when no one is interacting with the TV for long periods, and sometimes they really push their luck. They'd insert literally half an hour long infomercials in there. Imagine if that sort of thing was unskippable lol.

As for me I use an adblocker.

Isn't it already the case though?
I watched some stuff on the Youtube app on my TV some months ago and it's borderline unusable.
Open any video and your are hit with a 30 seconds ad that you can only skip after like 20 seconds but that sends you into another ad which you are allowed to skip after 5 seconds. Then as you are watching not only is it constantly stopping to show you more lengthy unskippable 20+ seconds ads, but like half the time when you skip forwards or backwards in the video it also hits you with an ad.

They got me to pay for Premium.

YouTube Music and no ads on videos for the exact same price as Spotify. It's a no brainer.
Here it's 169 NOK (≈$17.5) per month. Not even close to worth it IMO. I could see myself biting at max $7.99.

There were talk about Youtube Premium Lite coming here aswell, but so far ...nada.

On PC and Android it's a non-issue thanks to ad blockers, Brave, etc.

Out of all of these subscriptions YouTube is the most worthwhile IMO. It's just that we've been given a free service with minimal ads for so long we're spoiled.

I watched nothing but Youtube all weekend and the content is better than anything I would have found on cable TV.

I wonder how any of you would have survived in the pre DVR terrestrial TV days.

I lived through those days. It sucked, but back then it was the only thing we knew so it didn't bother us as much.
Though it's also why stuff like Youtube, Gametrailers, Newgrounds, etc were so appealing once they became available

Be youtube
Make a generally great service
Get bought by google
Continue operating a relatively great service
All competitors shut down
Enshittify the service to hell

It would be ok if it were based on how much actual time you watch.

Not sure why, but I don't get any ads at all on my Google TV Streamer 4K when watching Youtube as a guest.

I can't imagine how it could be much better? What's the issue with it?
From my short time of using it, it has the music videos as the song selection and gives you access to use/listen to music without being in the app.

I was a big YouTube Premium/Google Play Music when it was bundled as one. I stopped once they split the services.
