Ys Origin is a prequel to the eight previous installations of the Ys video game series. It takes place 700 years before the events of Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished, and tells much of the backstory of Ys, Darm Tower, the Black Pearl, the twin goddesses, and the six priests.

As someone who liked and finished The Oath in Felghana (even though it was freaking HARD) how does this one compare?

Glad to see this getting a Switch release.

All of these JRPG series suffer from not having the entire series available on modern platforms. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Ys, Tales etc. All suffer from this. It is not very easy to play through the full series. On top of that the myriad of ports and remasters that we do have are a mixed bag. There are pros and cons to each of the modern releases with various mobile phone port issues, QOL improvements, additional content, good and bad graphical changes, and inconsistencies with the original releases leading to a mixed bag. Would love to see these developers make definitive versions of these games available on modern machines. Especially with back compat seemingly being the standard going forward and digital distribution really maturing. Now is the time. We should have definitive ports of all of these JRPG series available to play.

Played the shit out of this on PS4. Great game, but not even close to something like Lacrimosa of Dana or Ark of Napishtim. Not gonna double dip. More excited for Ys 9 or Celceta on PS4.

I thought this would be remaster of the original games. I have thought of getting into the series, but I think I should start from there and not from newer games.

I think Felghana was harder overall.

Origin tells an amazing story via multiple perspectives IMO, the action is pure and straightforward (Felghana has quite a bit more JRPGing) though I seem to remember the biggest negative point of the game is that it has level thresholds.

This means that if you're underleveled by 1-2 levels upon reaching a new area, you need to go back to a lower area and grind to an appropriate level before you can make progress. It's not like a Souls game where you can mitigate the leveling with skillful play.

Oh and, Origin has the best opening of any of the Ys games for my tastes.

And one of the original JP trailers for its release on PC back then:

Just as a heads-up and for anyone who doesn't want to deal with Limited Run Games, a very similar physical edition for both PS4 & Switch will be released in Japan on 10/1/20. Going by the publisher's website, the Japanese release will also feature English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish subtitles (website link).

Taking into account exchange rate & shipping to the U.S., the Japanese release can be purchased for around $65 from Amazon.co.jp (PS4 | Switch).
