Smart needs to cool down and get some help. Letting this stuff get to you is fine as a normal twenty year old, but NBA careers can be really short so he needs to figure things out pretty quickly. He's been melting down for weeks now.

The fan is garbage and hopefully doesn't get defended. Way too many people dehumanize opponents and refs during games and act psychotically at sporting events.

Probably will end up as a he said - he said situation.

It just will be hard for me to trust the same individual that is most known for spectacular displays of embellishment and sheer invention.

Smart's getting helped up a couple feet from the three people.
White dude is pulling him to his feet.
Smart turns and comes at the dude.
Looks like the man says 'stop' like he's scared.
Gets pushed by Smart.

As Smart walks back to his coach/ref he says 'he ran his mouth' if lip reads are to be believed.

Not defending the dude but Smart is accountable here.
People want to jump on this race issue so bad. Fuck.

Of course you'd prefer that he just ignore it and walk away, but the players are still human.

That's the point though. Other humans aren't pushing mean or (potentially racist) fans. They're PLAYING THE GAME. Shows Smart doesn't have the figurehead and needs a tighter leash/he lack discipline.

Not surprising though considering he's the rare lottery pick that came back in the NCAAs. Sure he's given the keys to Stillwater or just about with regularity.

People are desperately hoping the fan called him a n word. lol

Anything short of that and Marcus becomes indefensible

because stop is something that "your mouth said that it shouldnt" and now you "feel bad"

It always breaks my heart when I tell someone to stop.

Could just have easily been a sexist comment in relation to the flopping.

There are plenty of things he could have said that he now regrets because it is going to come out what exactly was said.

Probably because he got called the N word. Old man is lucky all he got was a shove.

I've been in intense games. I've seen people fight over stupid shit.

I don't assume every shove comes after someone drops the n bomb. It's clear in this thread that many here want to justify Marcus, and are hoping for a narrative to supports that, because if that old man said " you're playing like a little bitch." Not so easy to brush aside Marcus acting like an idiot.

People need to understand the context of this season, too.

OSU started the season in the top 10 and looked great, rising up to #5 and even getting a first place vote.

Then our rim protector and rebounder Cobbins gets hurt, and we completely melt down. We've been treading water at best since then, and we've now lost 4 of 5 and our hopes of making the NCAA Tournament are dimming. Our freshman stud got kicked off the team for weed and alcohol offenses, leaving us with 6 decent rotation players.

On top of that, our shitty coach (who convinced Smart to forgo a top 5 draft spot last season) is losing control of the program and will probably get fired.

TL;DR: the season is a clusterfuck and this situation is the culmination of a ton of stuff on top of whatever that jackass said to Smart.

Remember kids, if you're a rich old guy in the crowd, you have no accountability and don't have to take any responsibility for your actions, even if you're directly associated with a major university.

I think more fans need to get punched in the mouth. The world would be a better place. I want more Malice in the Palace events.

Regardless of N word or not, Lol, fucking race cards. So tired of that shit. Why can't someone just be pissed at another person because they're acting like a dick?

Really..? Go to espn and watch the slowed down bit of the clip. Towards the end of the lead clip on the front page.

What if the fan said something racist or something equally terrible? Does that make Smart's reaction okay? Nope.

I'm not defending the fan - but people want to assert racism for the wrong reasons here simply based on their skin colors (and likely that it happened in Texas).

It's also perfectly possible the fan said 'keep adding to the losing streak' or something equally as shitty. We don't know.

Smart was an energized athlete that just dived into the crowd amidst a losing streak/about to lose another game. Could he be a bit irritated by ANY type of jab?

That's one of the things about basketball - the fans are almost right on top of the players. It makes heckling and such a lot more in their face than in other sports.

And fans can get really nasty..

hell yeah

"Fans" are fucking ridiculous. It's like looking at a stream chat of Twitch during a big event.

For some reason because they're athletes, they're forced to just suck it up. plenty of people, even on GAF, have said "if they said that to me I'd punch them in the face" or something along those lines

There's nothing wrong with good old trash talk. A "fuck you! you fucking suck!" is fine but that's not at all that is said

I have no idea

But I'm not a big fan of easily declaring people racist with no proof or justifying senseless violence.

But you think it's okay for this old man to call this unpaid student athlete a "little bitch"? He's just a kid, how do you expect him to react?

It's probably unfair, but players simply can't react to fans like that. The Big 12 (or eventually the NBA) will always defend the fan in this situation. He won't spend much time in the pros with that shit since every professional stadium in the world is going to have lowlifes in the crowd.

Also, I said this in the NCAA bball thread, but I feel like his teammates were a little slow on the uptake here. I mean it happened kinda quick, but they should have been up there pulling him back to the court as soon as he turned towards the old dude. I dunno, maybe it was too fast for them to do that.

Hope the season turns around a bit for Smart (and OK State). Dude is fun to watch and has a ton of potential.

part of me agrees with this.

don't want no shit won't be no shit basically but then again....

regardless, this is a 20 year old kid in the moment of stress. He lost his cool. N Word, getting called a bitch, or whatever just made a bad moment worse.

Both parties come out of this looking worse....but the actual adult should know better

UH yeah?

It's just basketball...calling someone a Nigger and then expecting them to just take it is some chickenshit behavior and you deserve to get a mudhole stomped into you. That word isn't something yo just throw at dudes like that...it means something.

Is this comedy?

Obviously I don't want games to break out in to giant brawls, but the entitlement of some fans is amazing. Fans in the crowd think they can, and 99% of the time do, get away with pretty much anything. It is hilarious to see some dude call a player a racial slur/shit talk him (depending on the report you read) and then get upset when he gets pushed back.
