Man that ending was absolutely amazing, everything from the pacing to the camerawork was brilliant. The case work and suspect chase of this show is the best part imo, everything else (Maggie arc, fedora Rust, adulterer Martin) falls flat for me.
9/10 Episode

I just watched the last scene again and counted 12 places there could have been cuts but the way you can tell there wasn't any (aside from the article saying there wasn't) is how bad the punches that Rust thew on the 2 guys who attacked him after he called Marty. He kind of pushes his forearm into the back of one of the guys and he grabs the back of his head like he took a head shot.

Holy fuck, Fukunaga is a God. I said, "Man this really feels like Children of Men" about halfway through that shot. Not to mention the rest of that episode, but jesus all I can think about is that shot.

It really sucks that he's not going to be back for season two fulltime, hopefully he can direct an episode or two.

Picked a lousy time to starting getting into The Wire. So far, I've seen very little as compelling from just the four episodes of this show.

Wow, that episode was amazing. So damn tense. And there are what, four more? This is shaping up to be one of the best of all time. The acting is just great, and so is the directing and cinematography.

While I admire that it was one take, I would have liked to see Rust go to all lengths to get Ginger in custody. A punch to the back of a big ass black dude is supposed to leave him incapacitated? It just wasn't that believable.

Meanwhile, Ginger is running away, I mean shoot the fucker in the foot or something.

Still, an amazingly tense scene.

Think that was supposed to be a pistol whipping, if I'm thinking of the same "punch." But it was a little sloppy. Guess they didn't want to redo the whole thing just for that.

I'm not talking about a collateral wound, jesus it's a shot to the foot.

Rust punches two big thugs once to the back and they are suddenly out for the count (absurd), meanwhile Ginger comes running back to the arms of Rust after he just beat the shit out of him? I get that he was in a state of confusion, but it came off incredibly ridiculous, almost like a three stooges stunt, especially for a show that has maintained a sense of groundedness to it. This biker guy is supposed to be a badass and instead he comes off as a willying insufferable baby as soon as his life is in danger.

Shoot him in the foot, put him across your back and carry him, then throw him in the car and patch him up hastily as you drive off/threaten him.

I wasn't suggesting to go the hospital, that's idiotic.

I saw Jeff Beukeboom, a 6 foot 5, 230 pound defencemen, take a punch to the back of the head when he played for the Rangers. Getting hit back there can fuck you up really badly. But besides that, he had the guy on the ground and he had a bat and knew Rust had a gun. I'd stay on the ground too.

And Ginger came running back because he knew the people coming from the other direction would kill him and Rust wouldn't. It was in his best interest to stay with him.

same happened with me. took me a couple times to get past the first few episodes, but once i did, oh boy. i've rewatched the series about 7 times, now.

I watched a lot of the wire. Never got into it. Picked it up again like a year later and liked it a lot. You have to be in the mood for that show to click imo.

I mean I get that it's a bit nitpicky for an incredible hour of television, but I felt it was one of the first real flaws I could find in an otherwise perfect start to this show.

Also, they kinda broke a cardinal rule of film making - don't fucking show a gun if you aren't going to fire it. The automatic rifle/grenade in Rust's apartment, (while an obvious method of foreshadowing that shit was bout' to go down), still a horrible cocktease.

That being said, this was probably one of my favorite shots of the series so far and is just beautiful. What other television show dares to have cinematography this good?

Did noone else think GTA when Ginger said "Lets do this mission then we can talk?"

Also fantastic episode, best so far.

Wowowow, the final third of this episode is unlike anything else I've seen in television.

So fucking good I even forgot Rust is still alive in the future while watching it, so goddamn tense.

Makes sense why Rust and Marty are holding back so much during the interviews; they were part of a large shootout with numerous fatalities off the book. Considering the gunfire as Rust is escaping, and that last shot from the helicopter, was it that the first responding police officers were overwhelmed as well (possible shot at the very least)?? If so, eeesh, what a colossal clusterfuck that turned out to be.

Promo:
I don't understand how/why the show is setting us up to be suspicious of Rust as a present day serial killer.

Throughout the show so far they've shown us how much work and diligence Rust is putting in to finding the killer, and as far as demeanor/outlook on life he hasn't changed much over the years (besides the drinking and possible drugs). However that's hardly a case for suspicion of having a motive to become a serial killer.

Everything else about the show is great, but I think that stuff (which seems to be the focus of the next episode) isn't working so far yet.

I felt the same way, at one point it just clicked though. I think "One Arrest" was the episode.

It's just so odd to consider the show dated when it's one of the original programing which shifted the tide for television series.

That being said, the other issue I have is people tell me it's better than The Sopranos, which is a pretty difficult feat and large expectation.

Same. I had Michael Mann feel more than Cuaron, and that is probably because of the amazing lighting and camera angles.

Totally agree. The lighting and the camerawork was totally Mann. The upclose handicam technique has not been used before in the show iirc.

Yeah, not even the famous take Children of Men was one take. They used cgi to splice the shots together.

This was some next-level shit. Amazing.
Mhmm, you could notice when they cut to new footage but it was impressive nevertheless.

AM I confused? I thought they were goign to seize the compound of LeDOUX in the last episode.

I initially thought that too because the way it was edited/cut in episode 3 made it seem like Rust/Mart were in haste in-route to Ledoux's place.

But I rewatched it and that's not the case. They aren't on their way to his place, they just were giving a glimpse of Ledoux as a teaser of what's to come.

I think they just found out a guy named LeDOUX was a key suspect at the end of last episode, the last scene was showing LeDOUX, but I don`t think they know where he is yet.

That was terrific! And that one take at the end, I literally said "wow" out loud and I rarely do that.

Btw, did anyone notice that the bartender at the strip club was the writer, Nic Pizzolatto?!

I'm a little annoyed that I started watching this yesterday, because now there's that familiar feeling of waiting for the next episode to hit.

Really fantastic stuff.

One of the reasons I'm hesitant to start The Shield, aside from trying to seperate Goggins from Boyd Crowder, I'm worried it might feel dated. I watched The Wire while Season three of Breaking Bad was airing, and that was pretty much the start of my "great tv" watching. Now I've seen so much good stuff in the last couple of years, expectations are even higher.

That '30 seconds in and out' segment of the long take is so friggin tense. The camera going back and forth between Rust waiting on Ginger getting the money and the rest of the project goons getting impatient outside of the window then it all exploding when the guy in the biker gang kills the guy..........oh man.

Don't judge a series by a couple episodes. The wire takes at least four eps just to dmset the table. If you aren't incredibly impressed by the end of the first season then maybe it really isn't for you. After season 4 if you don't understand the appeal then there's probably something wrong with you. I don't like to rank shows because each show has different goals. Sopranos and The Wire are both incredible at what they set out to do.

Anyone else love the scene at the bar with Rust and Martin, I think it must have been right after the hospital scene. The one where Rust is talking about crazy pussy, that's about as funny as that show is gonna get. I thought it was great.

Looking forward to next week, that's gotta be the transitional episode from past to present.

Rust is like a goddamn super hero. Able to get through all that while all fucked up on drugs and booze.

It was awesome when he knocked the shotgun as it was firing into the gang member.

I don't want to watch anymore tv for awhile... that was impeccably done and amazing. this show is impeccably done and amazing.

more people should be watching this. the LTTP threads are going to make me giggle.

pretty good

i see this show has taken up the breaking bad hyperbole mantle

lol forreal.

greatest show of all time

matthew mcconaughey and woody harrelson's career achievement

greatest cinematography

greatest action etc.

it was pretty damn entertaining though i have to say, escape from the hood especially. i think this will be a top 3 show of the year by the end of 2014.

We now have 8 weeks of TD + 10 weeks of GoT...then 34 other weeks of the year. :(

i was thinking mad men, and a battle between black sails, game of thrones and vikings for the other spot. don't know what else is coming back this year.

I got a huge Michael Mann feel from those last 20 minutes. Fantastic stuff.

yeah. after they dealt with the marriage subplot it then turned into miami vice 06 for me. i was quite happy with this episode.

Jesus Christ, and here I was thinking that never again would I feel the heightened tension induced by amazing storyline, acting, and cinematography that Breaking Bad provided now that it is over...

Seriously, this show is only 4 episodes in and has reached God-tier.

You're cute. Those shows are garbage compared to this.

I'm not ready to call it the greatest show of all time, but it's one of the best for sure. HBO's done it again.

All hyperbole aside, McConaughey is obviously brilliant (to say the least) in this role, making Rust an all time great character. Also, that really has to be the most impressive scene in TV history.

as if game of thrones is inherently better than vikings just because it's hbo

childplease. learn to read. i said top 3 shows of the year. true detective, mad men, and a show with swords.

edit: yeah mcconaughey is good, and he's already become one of my favorite current actors. but woody harrelson is just as good in here i think.

Also

"Must be hard spending every day stuck next to someone spouting insane shit."

Rust snorting the coke in the evidence room was a sign he was ready to get back into a world of shit from his undercover days. I think its interesting that he was going to rely on cell phone tech in those days, especially when he didn't have one and was expecting his plan to go off without a hitch and gain access to a phone to call. We all knew things were going to work out,. The particulars are were the interest came from. How captivating and intense the last sequence was just blew me away. Many films and directors that have attempted long takes and creative, money saving edits to put a cohesive shot together. I was watching closely for the edits. Stuff like when the camera moves in front of a pole or around a corner, or past a person. I've watched it twice now and it looks like one continous take to me. If it's the real deal, that's an impressive technical achievement for a TV! Show.

Haha.

Fair enough, different strokes for different folks. I found Vikings to be incredibly campy, it's like Game of Thrones without the well written dialogue and political intrigue.

I mean if you want your head chopping and maiden defiling, I guess it fits the bill.
