Alts really need to be a significant part of this Smash. They're such an easy way to add extra fanservice with minimal effort - see Project M, which gets so much mileage from not a whole lot of additional work on their part.

Things like Dr. Mario for Mario, Dr. Luigi/Mr. L for Luigi, Dry Bowser for Bowser, or even Boom!Sonic or SS!Zelda add so much to the experience and add so much fun to the game when all they really require is a little bit of model work and maybe a few extra lines of code to modify things like Mario's fireballs into pills.

I'm not very fond of the idea of making whole new characters alternate costumes, though. It feels like a copout to me - if I was a fan of a character and all they got to be was an alternate costume I would be pretty annoyed. Plus it's a lot of extra effort when compared to a normal alternate costume, necessitating things like additional narrator dialogue and a whole new voice actor. I hope they don't do any of those sorts of things, personally. If it's a different character I'd rather they either take up a separate slot and be a clone or just not get in until they can justify at least that position on the roster.
 
How long has Project M been hackless? I've never tried it because I always thought I had to hack my wii...

The idea that changes the actual character when changing into an alt costume needs to die.

Dr. Mario is good because he is Mario.
Lucina is bad because Marth is a different character.
Male Wii Fit Trainer works because the character's name is "Wii Fit Trainer".

I don't really have anything to add to that.... I guess then he is in? Sorry I'm not trying to be rude I just can't really keep a conversation going off of that.

My feeling about alts is I would like the Project M route where it is keeping the same core character and literally just altering how he looks (love that ocarina of time link alt) but I agree, it would be frustrating to have seperate characters literally just be alternate skins over the top of current characters. Either make then assist trophys or collectible trophys or don't include them at all
 
Talking about 3rd parties, I'd love to see Jack Frost from SMT be in the game. His hook? Have all the attacks, grabs, etc... be done by various summoned demons.

Just throwing that out there.

Considering that they're crossing over with Fire Emblem, yeah, he has a good shot.
 
I don't know much about SMT series and haven' ever played one but my friend is seriously obsessed with it so I am familiar with the character Jack Frost. Just how far of a stretch would he be? Does the developer have a pretty good history/strong current ties with Nintendo? Could be an interesting play style from what I know about the series

Atlus is having a collaboration between SMT and FE for Wii U and now they are owned by Sega.

I sort of dug how they handled John Stewart being playable in Injustice, which is exactly what you're describing here. Really depends on a character-per-character basis.

Metal Sonic (obviously a different entity to regular-ass Sonic) as an alt with his own taunts and voice clips would be really cool and I don't think anybody would've ever realistically expected him playable otherwise, but characters like Dixie, Roy or Mewtwo simply being model-swaps with voice changes for Diddy, Marth and Lucario respectively would really rub me the wrong way. Honestly it would revolve around whether the character who had become an alt was realistically likely to feature in Smash as a separate character.

The only thing about Alt-character costumes if they're in for more characters, is that I hope they will get their own "Title" and Voice Over.

Seems like Donkey Kong's alternate could just be him wearing Funky's clothes, since they're basically the same body shape sort of.

Or Eddie the Mean Yeti.
 
I would love a shadow alt for sonic. That would be so awesome. It would probably be hard to do his hover shoes though if he wasn't his own character right?
 
It doesn't make any sense for Kirby to look like the Villager who isn't in the game. He will have Villager hair without the face (just like Lucas).

Eh, Anth0ny, on top of my already stated dislike for representing completely separate characters via alt-costumes, I kinda feel that OoT & SF64 alts would be too easily mixed up with the normal versions of the characters during a game. Maybe instead, we give Fox & co their Assult duds, and Link the Rupee-eating armor from TP.

That's a really good point, and I think a case like John Stewart is really comparable to Wii Fit Trainer. They're different character in a lot of ways, but they're both Green Lanturns, so it makes sense for them to be on that funny line between making a new clone and being an alternate costume, with little touches like new voice clips and such.

I can't think of a lot of characters that would fit that bill outside of WFT and Villager, though. Pokemon Trainers from different generations and with different genders would make sense, of course. Metal Sonic and Lucina are in a similar boat in my eye of being kinda on that verge - they're definitely different characters but would make some sense as alternates, but on the other hand it wouldn't necessarily be tremendously true to their characters or very good to their fans...

I like PM's redesign of him as a boxer with the boxing gloves he uses in Mario Baseball. They could also pull one of his designs from Mario Party 2. Or maybe even Donkey Kong Jr., who would fairly easily fit into the same category mentioned above with Lucina and Metal Sonic - with possibly a little more validity of seeing him as the same character if you believe Rare's old claims.

There's precedent for this: Zelda's Kirby hat is of her young form rather than of her adult form seen in Smash Bros.

OoT!Link I can see being a possible issue considering SSB4's brighter color palette, but Fox and company look very different between SF64 and Smash Bros. as shown fairly well in PM.
 
If they ever want to do alternate character costumes complete with different voices (and they should anyway in future installments), I'd like to see:

Man this week can go so many ways now that tropical freeze will be out soon, who knows what sakurai will do, him revealing diddy kong would be the safest bet, but he could pull a pokemon and have like a assist trophy or something. Or a ND could be announced soon and dixie kong could be the newcomer(tho im still hoping palutena is the next newcomer revealed)

Sorta, but it never was more than just a recolor (Melee's had different earrings and such, but Brawl's was literally just a palette swap).
I'd rather have an alt that actually uses Daisy's face, as well as replace the heart particles from Peach's moves with flowers (if not even give her Daisy's voice).
