Double standards = double standards

and I don't see why anyone gets a pass regardless of the subject at hand. Entire thread seems to be in breach of the site TOS from what I can see. Stereotypes are rarely anything other than negative and the perpetuation of them is never a good thing regardless of how benign they may appear. Ultimately they encourage people to accept a concept as given versus arriving at their own conclusions.

Yeah pretty much this. I'm having all the fun in the world watching this thread but reading the comments of people trying to find the rationale on why we should accept certain generalization and not others... no thanks. Just accept the fact that you can actually laugh on things that can offend others, it happen all the fucking time and it's not always the end of the world.

Yup. I know I can't dance, but thats not because I'm white, its because I fucking suck at it.

Let me know exactly when you find your stereotype-free utopia so I can ring the bell of bullshit for all to hear.

You're worrying - looking at yourself from some outside source of judgement that doesn't actually exist. Dancing should come from the inside out. It's a fearless act, done in spite of whatever bullshit your brain says you should be doing instead.

EDIT: The dude below me gets it. All hail Duane!!

Those outside sources are called gifs. I mean.. c'mon, you're saying just let yourself go as long as you're willing to be made fun of in gif form.
We can't dance : (

Maybe in about 50 or 100 years from now, making jokes about stereotypes for other races won't hurt their sentimental values either. Its just that given recent history, making the same kind of jokes for other races can be seen as racist. That's just how the politically correct climate is right now, even if you had no ill-intentioned basis behind the jokes.

This thread is purely for amusement, in reality some of the best dancers in the world are white. What you can do is set an example on how not to get so up-tight about light-hearted jokes on silly stereotypes.

Well you definitely can't dance with that attitude.

Dammit, I'm trying here. If you don't want to realize your potential as the dancehall stud you were born to be, then so be it. It be so.

Not that I give a shit, being a proud member of the white non-dancers and all, but saying "Oh, just lighten up" has never been an acceptable excuse for adhering to stereotypes. I find it silly and make jokes about my banjo loving, casserole making, mayonaisse eating brethren all the time, but if somebody doesn't like being stereotyped, it's not really cool to just tell them to get over it. You don't get to tell people how to feel about shit.

The reason this topic has gone unscathed is because...well, white people not being able to dance really isn't that offensive of a stereotype to a lot of people, apparently. It is a double standard. I can't imagine this topic surviving if it was about a minority stereotype...but there aren't too many relatively inoffensive minority stereotypes.

Asians can't drive
Black people can't swim

Those are relatively inoffensive I think?

Asians are good at math.
Black people are good at sports.
Jewish people are good with money.

There are many.

Hey if you're too lazy to question everything you're told, that's your burden. Don't be putting that on me.

What you can do is set an example on how not to get so up-tight about light-hearted jokes on silly stereotypes.

Way to prove the point.

Re-dropping for perspective, if some of those bubbles are made of clear plastic

I avoided this thread because knew only fudd could result, but that has to be the worst analogy I've ever seen.

People assume you can't dance so they. stock and frisk you, assume you're dangerous, look for excuses to pull you over, are skeptical when you're driving a luxury vehicle, make you prove your credentials whenever you walk into a professional building, shoot you for playing loud music, follow you around stores, have police officers become more likely to use physical force, finding it harder to associate positive terms with you when only presented with a face and nothing else, and finally, apply disproportionate sentences against you for the same violation as those who are assumed to be good dancers?

Double Standards everywhere. But damn this thread is funny. To be fair, here in latinamerica the sterotype is "Gringos can't dance for shit"

Ding.

I don't know why anyone is attempting to ruin a thread of amusing gifs of people dancing badly, but I'd appreciate it if it would stop.

Perhaps I was unclear. This was not a request.

Stop backseat modding. Stop thread whining. Stop derailing.
