Finally got a 768 and a 23k score, but I can't figure out if there is some randomness when moving when having many free slots, and especially when not combining anything, or if there's some kind of rule.
So usually I just play it safe later on and trying to have an extra way out.

Adding into the Threes love, I just broke 7k today so that was nice. It's just a massive time vacuum of a game, hours flit pass as you swipe slowly and methodically. In my half asleep state on the bus this morning I saw some numbers next to each other and imagined them slotting together. That's never good.

I know that feeling, sometimes I see numbers when I close my eyes =(
12s and 6s and shit...

Don't play the game if you're sick!

Ah!!!
When I move icons in the springboard I now totally expect them to stack.

Not to mention I'm pretty sure I heard Warhammer Quest icon saying 'Hi!' to Battle of the Bulge icon this morning.

Ugh, I'm the worst at Threes. Everything I try every time strategy, I do worse than when I'm just mindlessly going for it.

Threes is awesome but I can only play it in shorter bursts otherwise I just spam moves because the numbers start to blur together. When you get into a groove though, it feels damn good. I gotta just watch the coming tiles closer though.

Haven't been following this thread this month and I'm sure it's praise has been sung extensively already but I can't say enough about Threes. I don't think I have ever had a better time with an ios game. It is an incredible game that has literally taken over my life. Every spare moment of my free time has been take over by this game! Absolutely fantastic!

I hope this is the right place to ask but;

I really want a RPG for my 5s, and right now it stands between FFIV, FFV, FFVI or TWEWY. Out of those, which one do you guys recommend I start out with? I've never played either of them, so they all would be a new experience. :)

One of those can of worms questions and all of them are excellent. However FF6 stands out in a class of its own.

TWEWY is quite different and you will get the most out of it if you are into Japanese culture.

Hah, yes I realize it's bit of an odd question. Was more curious if one was considered a better port than the others, since they're all considered to be good games. But I think I'll start out with TWEWY, since I've heard a lot about that game. Will jump into the FF-games once that's finished. :)

Clarification - if you're not really into Japanese culture, this game might make you outright hostile towards it. I don't think I've ever played something more grating, cloying, philosophically shallow and aurally offensive.

Fair warning ;)

And I've even watched a fair amount of anime too, I thought I was down with my Japanese bredrin. But no, I think this game made me 11.4583% more racist.

Yeah I didn't like it at all either. But it is one of those games people seem to love for some reason so I was being diplomatic ;)

I think it's important to present a balanced picture. I think I hate it as much as Fuu loves it for pretty much identical reasons with opposite polarities.

Whoa. You're my new best friend. Thought I was alone in my hatred for TWEWY.

Just broke 11k in Threes. Anyone have any strategies worth sharing for getting higher?

edit: Sometimes when the next block queued up is white, instead of a 3 it'll be a 6, 12, 24, etc... is there any way to tell when it's not going to be a three?

That...doesn't sound very appealing, haha. I enjoy JRPG's, but maybe I should just pick up FFVI for now. :P

Yeah I'd do that if I were you. FF6 is really really good. I wouldn't even call TWEWY a JPRG (other than it's Japanese and is a bit RPGy) - it's more of a visual novel with touch/tap/scrub gameplay sections interspersed though it. And more JPOP than you can shake a stick at.

I like a lot of JRPGs. I thought TWEWY is sort of what the people who wear dragon shirts and argue over fan dub translations see when they close their eyes.

Check the game out on YouTube and see if you find it interesting. I'm not that into Japanese culture, I don't watch anime, but I found it rather enjoyable, including the music.

Coming this fall.

To be honest spending any more than a fiver on any Final Fantasy on iOS is ridiculous but that's just me. 6 looks like a joke and I personally won't give SE a euro for this. But some people seem to be pleased, fair enough.

TWEWY is one of my fave jRPGs ever, definitely appealed to my teenager self back in the day - it's easily one of the biggest and most complex games on iOS but there are some things that annoy me here. Removing the upper screen was sadly a must and the gameplay got slightly more shallow though it's still fun compared to other touch based battle systems iOS has to offer. Also the game is whopping 2.4 gb and they could easily drop a gigabyte had they actually kept the cutscenes as slideshows instead of turning them into videos. What a waste of space.

I don't know if that was a joke but claims that TWEWY made someone more racist are well, quite embarrassing. Beside that It's all down to taste, the game seems like style over substance but the gameplay itself is a lot of fun. If you enjoy what you see on the videos you are in for a treat. And for the writing... Final Fantasy is full of characters like this, especially from 7-13. The story itself is very unusual and gets very interesting after finishing the main storyline. And for the collectionists the game is going to stay on the device for at least 250 hours. So definitely worth your money but it's a game that people either love or hate. And for the record I am not really into the typical manga and anime stuff nor I really play games that have very anime-sque characters so I don't know... I think if you just appreciate the style and don't mind the angsty teenagers too much the game is a lot of fun.

No, I'm sure he was completely serious about a video game upping his racism stat 11 percent points. ;)

Video of Dungelot 2.

I really enjoyed the first game and am looking forward to this a lot. Yeah, the balance got a bit dumb after a few patches, but I got at least $5 worth out of the $1? purchase of it prior to that, and I did humor the patched version up to level 100+ or whatever a few times as well.

Seems this one is F2P with some sort of generous stamina system (aka think of it as a demo version that can be played free unless you get hooked) which then can be removed from the game entirely for $4, making it a completely premium game, with no timers.

I'm interested in all the new mechanics they added this time around, looks like there's multiple dungeons, towns, and other things. Video above is 30 mins long, but I'll just wait til tomorrow before spoiling everything.

Did a flick through the video and it seems to be doing everything right.

If there is a premium option I'm in. Only question can be the balance, but I'm sure I'll get a lot of fun out of it.

Having a lot of fun with my intermittent FF4 sessions, I'm at Eblan atm. Cecil with Draw Attack + Counter is a beast, looking forward to adding the Kick augment to the combo to use during normal fights.

:lol

I feel so alienated by this entire page! What's funny is that I actually don't even have much cred with other TWEWY fans anymore since I don't think the iOS port is an abortion.

Anyway, what igor said. :P It's a complex and robust game, but definitely not for everyone. DS and iOS versions play differently but the latter is more than fine.

I hope that's the art style. Rovio's artists are so goddamned good.

EDIT: Better, working, promo image:

Yeah, I'm digging the soft look in that artwork. I lol'd at this bit from the PR though:

"Angry Birds Stella is breaking the mould by introducing strong, passionate characters who really stand for something, while adding plenty of action and reality into the mix."

Will I like TWEWY if I enjoyed games like Persona 3 and 4? I'm neither attracted to nor offended by the art style but I heard one of the songs in the soundtrack (Calling?) and I thought it was good.

I think it's random, albeit I've noticed that if you have a board filled with 12, you have higher chances of getting a 12 (I got even 48) instead of a 3 (which happens 90 percent of the times).
At the expense of a week of shitty scores, I've tried to build a plan...now I'm consistently getting over 10K scores while before I had a pattern like: 7K, 500, 3K, 1K, 8K, etc...

My biggest problem is managing the higher numbers NEAR...I'm still undecided between a 'center' focused strategy or a 'corner' focused strategy.

Often I get many 96 or 128 SEPARATED by lousy 24 and 6 :(

I really want to merge at the very least two 384...would mean around 20K points.
But more than points I want to hear her/his voice :P

A very cool thing I didn't noticed before.
If you 'try' a movement to see how the whole board moves and then go back, trying in every direction....after a while the tiles get bored...so they tell you to move on with sentences like:

Hurry up!
Move!!!
I'm bored!!!
Yaaawn!!!

What a great game and unexpected gem.

I think so, yes. :) P3 and P4 are a great litmus test for TWEWY and other JRPGs that rely heavily on anime tropes and visual novel-style cutscenes. Just make sure to watch a couple of videos since gameplay-wise it's very different as it's an entirely touch-based Action RPG.

I'm in the mood for a good first-person dungeon crawler - something like Might & Magic/Etrian Odyssey, so long as it's turn-based. Undercroft and the Quest are the only ones I know of - any other suggestions?

Cool, thanks! I think I'll pick it up after I finish KOTOR. I'm finding iOS games to be relatively cheap (even $18 for TWEWY sounds reasonable to me) so I'm making an effort not to build up a backlog.

Check this out: http://toucharcade.com/2014/02/13/hands-on-with-coldfire-keep-old-school-dungeon-crawling/ According to the article it comes out next week.

Quick question about Threes: does it allow background music to be played?
Will I be able to listen to podcasts while playing the game?
