Came for the overreactions, you guys didn't disappoint.

I am baffled by the hype around this game. That footage looked like any number of Korean MMOs except that it's offline. Wait around until your guys' meters fill up so they attack the brain-dead enemies who don't react to any of your hit, and just keep waiting until they drop dead.

Someone explain the appeal of this game to me because I'm not seeing it. I admit to not caring about JRPGs in general, but the fever pitch around this game aroused my curiosity anyway. This is hands-down the least impressive Wii U exclusive Nintendo has currently announced, unless there's some layer here I'm missing. Is there some interesting story premise or something? I'm assuming there's some kind of hook that just wasn't shown in that footage.Someone set the record straight for me.

Try playing the predecessor?

I'm not worried about the UI, it's been at least a little different in each video we've seen so far. Especially this one, it's almost entirely different compared to the old trailers. Clearly they're still refining it so whatever we get at release will be more polished.

Plus, like I said on the first page, I'm not even confident it's a 2014 release, so they could still have a year+ left to get it perfect.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
I'm happy with the reveal; however, I do feel that the UI needs a tad of adjustments. Furthermore, I would of been much more content with a trailer compared to a long sequence of gameplay. Nevertheless, I'm excited for the game and hopefully by E3, we will get some closure.

So, something that caught my eye. What does the "Side/Middle" "Front/Middle" "Back/Middle" mean there?
Doesn't seem to be in regards to where the enemy is. Maybe it's what you're aiming at?

In Xenoblade, a lot of attacks were positional. So if you hit someone from the back with a certain attack, it would do a lot more damage. Or if you hit them from the side, it would inflict a status ailment. That kind of thing.

Right? It's a mess as it is right now:

There are much better ways to send visual information without having half of what is honestly a good looking game hidden behind numbers and bars.

hopefully they will give you the option to view it on the gamepad instead, like monster hunter.

You couldn't even see them properly with the numbers flying around and the camera panned out like that, so what's the point of saying they ain't memorable? We haven't seen the cast either.

I rewatched it and looked at them. And then there's the close up of what I assume is the main character in the first trailer.

Their environmental designs are pretty amazing. Their character designs are weak though.

I think that was just AI characters, no? If you look at the very beginning of the video when they are are running up to the monsters, the other 3 people stop right behind the main character all at the same time. So I'm pretty sure it's not human characters playing in that battle. Also after that first battle, the way the other characters ran back to their mech looked very much like it was programmed for that to happen.

Why name some random NPCs "Player 2-4"?

That UI is horrible. Everything else looks alright. Reminds me of White Knight Chronicles. but done right.

Still, that UI. Oof.

I'm guessing it's structured more like PSO with Xenoblade's gameplay/world. But that's just based on what they've shown, hard to judge anything based on what they haven't shown.

Lot of people are making assumptions that Takahashi = massive story driven RPG, but I don't think that's necessarily true. Especially if Miyamoto got his grip on the game or something.

That makes me a little nervous. Hopefully Miyamoto if far away from this game. I really hope this has a meaty single player game even if it's a PSO style game.

the gameplay video made the game look fucking boring as dog shit

way too many numbers on screen

Take THAT Borderlands!

Edit: actually I'm a sucker for those numbers popping up showing damage. But they seemed kinda big in this game. Soon were going to have so many numbers popping up you won't see the enemy lol

Looks good, they should go ahead and call it Xenoblade II though. :p Who are they fooling.

The battle cries are a bit much, but I dealt with them in Xenoblade and got over them, so no worries.

I was disappointed that we only saw battle gameplay. Xenoblade's battle system was OK, but far from what made the game great.

Now for the 2-month wait for the April direct, or even 4 months for E3. This was nowhere enough to satisfy my X craving :(

looks good. I love Nintendo's aproach to just show tons of actual gameplay in their trailers instead of doing cinematic trailers, or in this case just gameplay.

Given all the previous footage of the game being what they are, I'd say a cinematic or story trailer is exactly what X needed right now. My hype is honestly deflated for this game at the moment. If it's gonna be another game with focus on off-line mmo combat a la Xenoblade (or even FFXII) but with minimal shounen plot, then I'm out.

The UI is less intrusive than Xenoblade's.

Not saying it couldn't be improved, but it should've been expected that it would be similar at least.

How many people excited for X never played Xenoblade?

/raise

I mean, excited might be a strong word, but the combat looks promising.

Seamlessness of transferring in and out of the mech was great. Haven't figured out why you'd want to get out of the mech though, but I'm sure they'll balance it/justify it somehow.

People are excited/hyped because it is a sequel to Xenoblade - one of the best JRPGs last gen (if not THE best). Well, Xenoblade was my Game of the Gen, anyways. And this looks to be more of the same type of combat (except more refined and added elements).

You would think they would put that stuff on the gamepad leaving the screen clear like the trailer. That was a big thing many people said the gamepad could help devs in the rpg genre.

Looks like for that shot that has a lot to do with camera angle.

It may very well be an option, but I can't imagine why you'd want that for any useful UI information. I think it's reasonably fair to say that if you put UI elements on the gamepad they won't be visible to a player looking at the television.

Get Inside Her!
Yeah, gonna have to say I have no problem with the HUD at all. And I like the huge numbers. Sometimes it's okay for a video game to really obviously be a video game. It all disappears except for the minimap the second the battle ends anyway, you'll still get your sprawling panoramic vistas with minimal intrusion.

The only part of the UI that I feel looks bad is the exceptionally large QTE button and the fact that it doesn't fill the screen. It acts like it's respecting the safe zone older TVs or something.

Oh, and the hilariously bad English. :p

Weak is a strong word to use considering we've not had any substantial time with what the world is like and what their manner of dress is. I'm not a fan of characters looking flashy just to stand out: I'd rather have designs consistent with the world, much like the original Xenoblade.

All the weird complaints are just showing far to many in this thread and claimed to be interested in X didn't bother to play Xenoblade Chronicles. That game is the reason why people were interested in this new game. From the first trailer it was clear what battle system was being used and what combat would be like. All this new footage did was make that clearer and showed off new elements that weren't doable in Xenoblade. I don't understand the complaints at all. Did people not know what X was going to be when they decided to look forward to it?

It looking like or reminding of Xenoblade is not a negative. That game was amazing!

I didn't play Xenoblade, so I can't comment on how it actually plays, but that looked boring as fuck.

The mecha controls seem awesome, but the battle, holy crap.

And it was my most anticipated game.

I still plan on playing Xenoblade soon though, so hopefully that changes my mind.

Have you played Xenoblade?

You want that shit on screen at all times during battles. NO exceptions.

Seriously, where do you people get this stuff...
Play Xenoblade, then come back to us.

If you have to play an earlier unconnected game to understand the appeal, it may be an issue with the game not being clear. Nothing wrong with that if that is what they want, but posts like this are a bit stupid.

Remember everyone. The game's UI has changed several times already, so it will probably change again to feedback.

Quite underwhelming, to be honest. I'm really terrified with the idea of the game being too much focused on multiplayer, and I've never been really keen on hunting and mechas in games.

I haven't played Xenoblade and know basically nothing about it, so you'll have to explain to me what the appeal is.
It's a succesor to a great game. There are few JRPG's with the same scope and exploration. Gorgeous environments with a day and night cycle. The story was pretty engaging, till the last portion of the game at least. The setting is pretty cool, it takes place on 2 giants. Music is great as well.

I wasn't fond of the combat though.

It's not difficult to understand -- many people loved Xenoblade and its combat system, and this is its direct successor.

I thought it looked great. Xenoblade with Mechs and an even better battle system in HD? Yes, please. Hoping for a story trailer soon.

Only the look has changed. The UI is still basically Xenoblade, right down to the timed presses of B to fill the party meter and the "WARNING" bar at the bottom.

Everything about this game from the moment it was revealed says that it's, at the very least, a spiritual successor to Xenoblade. A game that many people have called the best JRPG in the last 8 years.

No. It was very dynamic and fun. You could choose to alternate between the roles of tank, DPS or a healer and you had to choose what to do all the time and link/chain your attacks and keep watch of your party. It wasn't perfect but it was good.

I disagree that it was very dynamic, fun, or good ;). As I said, I found it to be tedious and redolent of the worst aspects of the most common type of "Hotbar" MMO combat. It was average at best. But to each their own, the game more than made up for it in other areas and this one likely will as well.

That battle system looked pretty boring. It'll all depend on how it'll branch out, I guess.

Also I'm not even playing the game and those QTEs are already putting me off. Doesn't help that it gives you a AWESOME prompt if you hit them right.

HUGE SUCCEEDED
