New 'X' trailer [Monolithsoft] shows uncut gameplay

Looked like shit. Definatly not getting it now.
It looks like a bad FInal Fantasy game.

LOL that's rich.

I am baffled by the hype around this game. That footage looked like any number of Korean MMOs except that it's offline. Wait around until your guys' meters fill up so they attack the brain-dead enemies who don't react to any of your hit, and just keep waiting until they drop dead.

Someone explain the appeal of this game to me because I'm not seeing it. I admit to not caring about JRPGs in general, but the fever pitch around this game aroused my curiosity anyway. This is hands-down the least impressive Wii U exclusive Nintendo has currently announced, unless there's some layer here I'm missing. Is there some interesting story premise or something? I'm assuming there's some kind of hook that just wasn't shown in that footage.Someone set the record straight for me.

Combat can look messy without understanding what's going on. As for the appeal? It's a JRPG, plays a bit like one, but the most fun is without a doubt exploring some of the most beautiful places in a video game, huge, huge world to explore with day/night cycle, tons of side quests and a lengthy main quest which is something that fans of this genre usually like.

But yea, combat isn't for everyone but it's not like every enemy reacts like those in this video, they looked like simple enemies even though the second one was pretty huge (lots of them also in Xenoblade). Also, getting into combat is fast, there's no pause in between, same as for getting out of combat/winning. Everything just flows well.

God I can't wait to explore the world. I'm also super glad combat is EXACTLY how I'd want it to be.

Just need some actual answers on multiplayer now along with the story of the game, a North American release date and yeah... more exploration. :p
That's what I was thinking. This was pretty much the first thing I wanted to see. Now I want more.

I wonder why the mech has less HP then the player character? He has 6477 on foot, but only has 3400 inside the unit...

I played the original to about just 3/4 of the way through, but gave up. The battle system didn't do enough to keep me interested, and the plot was boring.

The constant chatter between the characters grew annoying fast, so I am disappointed it's still an issue here. Visuals are gorgeous, but I honestly can't see myself playing a sequel when I got bored of its prequel. And now I don't think I'd be able to stomach a similar plot with cheesy dialogue. Granted, it wasn't horrendous, but it was typical fare for this genre.

Man it's like 90% of the people hyped for this were just interested in pretty graphics and gifs and had no idea how Xenoblade even played.

It's like if I'd never played a Metal Gear and I watched a story trailer for 5 and got all hyped then looked at gameplay and was like "wtf this is a stealth game? so lame!!!"
Makes no sense to me.

You'd have a point if this game was called Xenoblade 2, or if they clearly stated that it was a direct sequel.

The ambiguity surrounding the initial reveal gave me that hope that Monolith would be trying something a little more ambitious this time, rather than just reusing the same archaic Xenoblade system.

Because the damage doesn't scale.
So you have more health as a person because a giant enemy would just destroy you if you had less than your mech.

I hope the optionnal quest system will be better, it's like the only bad thing about Xenoblade!
Also, still no name yet, WTF!

Instead of forming your opinion based on a short gameplay teaser/demonstration of a product that is obviously far from finished, you could also just watch one the actual trailers that show much better what people loved about Xenoblade and why they are excited for X. This demonstration was quite obviously targeted at people who know what they are looking at.

Yeah, fuck asking questions of people that have played the earlier game. Why would anyone do that?

Not what I was expecting at all. Multiplayer nonsense? It looks like it's trying to be PSO.
Or am I just assuming that Test, Player 1, Player 2, Player 3 isn't an indication of multiplayer like in every other game?

Would make sense if different mechs had different levels/stats. Could be a mech that with less defense and endurance but higher damage output.

Doesn't necessarily make logical sense for it to work out that way, but it could from a gameplay standpoint.

We've known it likely had multiplayer since the initial reveal where the game had a chat box.

Its been a while but wasnt it like that in Xenosaga as well? Could just be Mechscale Damage and Peoplescale Damage

I don't get a lot of you, IT'S XENOBLADE WITH MECHS!

Fucking day 1, I don't care if it's a regular JRPG or not, in Monolith I trust.

Pretty much how I feel as well. :) I think it looks awesome.

I will say though that this probably wasn't the ideal way to show the game off to the general public. Showing some random battle isn't super exciting (no matter what game), and a more involved trailer (with some story cutscenes) would have gone over much better.

Also someone mentioned the arm of the mech got chopped off - where exactly is that? I wanna see.

I knew there were multiple weapons, but I did not expect them to share the same battle pallette. The 1P character had both sword and gun arts. I'm interested in seeing how skills and equipment are managed this time.

B button from Xenoblade = Tension

Busy busy busy

You guys need to play some Xenoblade to understand what's going on.
Yeah, that B command is only for:

-interrupting enemy attacks to cancel death premonitions
-making longer combos, reducing delays between moves almost zero
-generally making your team work together better (like the "intense" mode in the above post)

It's only the B button and getting it right is very rewarding.

I thought that was the case at first, but he takes massive damage from the huge enemy in the mech. One hit drops him down half his HP. The unit is doing way more damage tho, so it's possible it may just be a glass cannon type deal.

Also, apparently I was incorrect. The indicator that says "Front / Side / Back" and "Low / Middle" is the player's current facing, not the skill.

Its been a while but wasnt it like that in Xenosaga as well? Could just be Mechscale Damage and Peoplescale Damage

Other way around, at least for Xenogears and Xenosaga 2/3. The mechs had far more HP.

Right before HUGE SUCCEEDED! You can see the arm fly off.

I'll be honest, this looked pretty bad to me. I'm still hyped for this game, but I don't think this was a good presentation. That said, I do know this is early/uncut footage. So I'm not judging the entire game off of this.

So why do they keep shooting the giant monkey monster in the balls?

It would be the first place I'd shoot.

Watched gameplay footage at it reminded me of PSO. Even though I know it does play anything like PSO it still brings back great memories. Looking forward to it.

Watch the new Bayo 2 footage. ULTIMATE CLIMAX GET!!!

We've seen the X's battle system in the very first trailer they've released. Everyone and his dog knew that this would quite obviously be the sequel to Xenoblade.

Also, calling Xenoblade archaic and unambitious has to be the most absurd thing I've read on GAF in quite a while. Whether one likes it or not, there's no denying that Xenoblade is one of the most ambitious JRPGs of the last decade.

For those people who think they're just hitting a punching bag, there are a bunch of other intricacies in Xenoblade such as Spike damage, topple, daze etc. that the enemy can do to you. Battle system might be bland if you're into action RPG, but it can definitely get challenging if you simply don't do things right.

Considering, how this place looks like the beginning of the game, these monsters aren't exactly supposed to be that strong. Xenoblade's beginning monsters just jumped on you. Later on, they start to use skills that disable your characters and require using B to bring them back up.

Hope that clears up some of the misunderstanding (please understand).

Yeah, that's how I feel.

X is going to be a great game I'm sure. But I was hoping for more than I just saw. I'll get it day 1 regardless, but it looks like they're just carrying over the same exact set up.

Pretty sure the high leveled characters unless that is the level of either their mechs or their armor are using rather low level weapons to showcase a mock battle. Very interested in what Rank 10 means. It's a more polished Xenoblade battle system and I can't wait to play it. Those that didn't like that battle system won't like this battle system. But for the most part everything ran smooth and looked great. And if there is online functions I doubt it will dictate what the story will be. This is Tetsuya Takahashi. I think we can expect something great.

This continued Monster Hunter comparison is rather silly. Next people will be saying Phantasy Star Online is a MH game.

What is really awesome is faster movement and more importantly multi-weapon switching on the fly which may indicate gamepad use. Sword to Gatling gun and back? Give to me.

Initially I thought I was watching Xenoblade in HD, but then when the numbers started flying around, guns were pulled out and I noticed P1, P2, P3...ugh.

I don't want another Monster Hunter/PSO.

I'm definitely interested in seeing more. Can't wait to see english voice actors in it as I've come to dislike those high pitched japanese voices.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
The comments in this thread are...confusing to say the least, Im pretty sure xenoblade was talked about enough that people bothered to look at it and know that X is a continuation of this, right? Neogaf?

Everything about X so far is visually inferior to Xenoblade, save for the fact that it's in HD. The colour palette, the character designs, the monster designs, the UI... everything appears to have been dulled down and had colour and personality removed.

We've only seen the tiniest part of the game though so I'm not freaking out.

Oh yeah sure, I'm not abandoning hope just yet. But for the time being, I agree with you 100%.

And even if it does look like that in the end, I'm sure I'll manage

holy crap did people say Xenoblade looked like Monster Hunter as well? I don't get this at all.

Anyways I'm hyped for this. Xenoblade with mechs in HD is what I wanted :D

I am in complete shock. X just looks fantastic. When I seen the Xenoblade mechanics I about melted. That is without a doubt the single greatest live action RPG system in my opinion. The hype train just drove me to fire up some Xenoblade. My next gen experience is complete.

The character faces in the upper left look like crummy "make your own avatar" faces typical of the MMO genre. I'm thinking this is going to play more like Phantasy Star Online than a traditional single player RPG, and that has me worried. Sure, Xenoblade was basically an offline MMORPG in many ways but I don't think the experience will necessarily improve by going online, especially if there is a monthly fee.

Xenoblade was a pretty highly regarded game. People who have played it and have a negative opinion on it is perfectly fine but some of the posts in this thread are just ridiculous. I expected better from NeoGAF. :/

"Archaic"? If Xenoblade is archaic, I don't even want to know what Final Fantasy or Tales are.

It's not Xenoblade 2 because it's not a continuation of the Xenoblade story. Not really that hard to understand. A lot of people liked the Xenoblade systems and mechanics a lot, so it makes perfect sense that Monolith builds upon that tried and true formula, gameplay wise. And I honestly don't see how this game is not ambitious.

It looks quite nice graphically, but it reminds me too much of white night chronicles in it's approach (ie. An MMO type world but played solo) i'm not sold yet.

Some more observations I've made.

  • Every character appears to have a rank indicator. I wonder what that is?
  • Level scaling seems a lot more smoother then Xenoblade's was. Your accuracy went to hell if you fought stuff too high a level in XB, but here they're almost ten levels apart yet not doing significantly bad.
  • The background music has vocals, both male and female.
  • None of the mech skills appear to use Tech Points.

X Gundam?!

Takahashi is a big fan of Gundam, after all. :D

I disagree that it was very dynamic, fun, or good ;). As I said, I found it to be tedious and redolent of the worst aspects of the most common type of "Hotbar" MMO combat. It was average at best. But to each their own, the game more than made up for it in other areas and this one likely will as well.

The usual mobs were pretty easy and the fights weren't that dynamic really, but a lot of the harder fights were quite dynamic. If you were a healer you had to keep on eye on your party all the time and keep the party members healed and protected and of course all the while attack the monster too. If you were a DPS then you needed to watch your aggro carefully and you needed to watch on what side of the enemy you were attacking and of course chain your attacks in the right way and possibly even watch what the other melee fighter was doing so you could use his attack buffs to your advantage. If you were tanking then you needed to hold aggro (granted, this was very easy though) and keep yourself protected, keep the enemy facing to the right direction and chain your attacks. It was somewhat like MMO combat often is, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Some people might not like that though and that's fine of course. In my opinion the combat was a lot more dynamic too than in MMOs.

I think this was kind of a bad trailer to show though.

Yeah, fuck asking questions of people that have played the earlier game. Why would anyone do that?

It's always about the way one asks a question. This discussion has started, because of a guy who's "baffled at the hype" and thinks it looks a cheap MMO. Of course people aren't going to respond favorly, if a person passes his judgement before even trying to understand what he's looking at.

But, sure, be passive aggressive all you like.
