Titanfall Beta (PC/Xbone) Impressions (No Key Begging/Trading or I will ban you!)

I suspect there's a higher level metagame that'll become more obvious when I start unlocking and playing with more weapons and get a better feel for the game as a whole, but yeah. It's not the kind of game where you're sitting on top of a building watching bots down the end of the street and think "Man, I wish I didn't have this assault rifle, so I could easily hit them". Pull up the iron sights and go to town.

Also, as a side, the bots/player ratio is a non issue. It's clearly the point of the game; bot mooks and players in the mix. It's fine, it works, and despite tons of bots I never, not once, had a problem coming across and engaging with other players, and being hunted down and killed by other players. The ratio is fine for the size of the maps, which too is fine.

That's good to know. I suspected as much when someone mentioned earlier that points wise, you had to get like 10 bot kills to equal 1 player kill.

I just played a match with a controller (on the pc) and it was pretty great. I think I did quite a bit worse but it was still really fun and seemed totally viable.

Smart pistol fells good. Pace and map layouts makes it hard for anyone to camp. Since kills reduce your Titanfall timer, everyone is encouraged to constantly engage so there's no dead time.

Titan against Titan is amazing combat. Tried to 1v2 and took one out before I ejected, but it felt so satisfying. Threw one guy's rockets and bullets back at his teammate, dashed up close and followed up with melees between shields and rocket bursts. Insane.

Only complaint is that when you start taking damage in a Titan, screen gets way to crazy and you can't tell what the hell is going on.

I'll echo those saying Titan play > Infantry play. The higher damage of the Titans, weighted movement, emphasis on dash-dodge over wall running and jump, and limited use of your equipment like the gravity thingo, dodge limits/recharge, and longer reloads makes for a pretty damn cool back-and-forth between Titans that requires more careful play and attention to what your opponent is doing and your surroundings. Two Titans duking it out as a bit of a dance where it can go sour for one of the two very quickly if they're not careful, so you end up with this tense back-and-forth of careful play and smart use of your weapons/skills. And that's while also being attentive to nearby infantry and their rocket launchers, or them grappling.

As an Australian player, there's no way I'd pay a cent for this. Ever.

In two hours, I've managed to get into two games, and the connection then was horrible. On a 100Mb cable connection. No surprise, since there's no local servers. There's no way EA is getting my money for this unless they promise local servers.

I'm done.

I'm finding that seeing actual players is rare. 4 times out 5 all I see are grunts. I feel like upping player count from 12 to 16 would be a benefit...

Just played my first round on PC with 150 ping. Game is ridiculously easy. I ended up shooting a few guys behind walls due the stupid lag. Didnt happen to me because I didnt end up even dying

Collision with objects and players goes crazy due to the lag.

The game has 0 competitive potential and they have confirmed no private lobbies at launch.

ggwp.

Also you spend more time killing AI than the Pilots.

Holy shit this is fucking amazing

Had a 1v3 titan fight, I took one down but I was getting hit hard by the other two then bam right behind them come 2 friendly titans. This is so fun

Wow, watching the Respawn guys play on PC is like watching a totally different game. The precision and speed are like night and day from the streams that were up yesterday.

Agreed. Watching them play it it feels like I'm watching COD meets Quake Arena. Impressively quick, precise and highly dynamic.

Fun as fuck. Feels like I'm in an action movie with some of the shit that goes down. I love going up against a Titan as a pilot, scurrying in and out cover and buildings; and I've had some clutch evac moments: sole survivor, make the jump, then turn around to get one last kill before warp speeding out.

Good to see a well thought critique after just playing one match with low ping in a beta, sure this is a opinion to take seriously.

Disclaimer: not even saying everyone needs to like this game, but...

CryptiK is in Australia. They've announced there will be no servers for Australia. I don't think the conclusion at which he arrived is unfair in this context.

Heh, the PC guys were apparently using controller there, too. I guess that bodes well for the comfy couch gamers.

Need some Last Titan Standing competition on the West US datacenter. Come take on me and a handful of other Respawn Devs!!!

Got an XB1 beta code. I played the various different modes, with the various different load outs and ranked up to level five.

So, general impressions are that it is a blast. One of the fastest moving FPS games I've played in a long time. The wall running and double-jumping is a lot of fun. You can chain wall runs and jumps together to traverse long distances in a short period of time, which is why the play is so fast. On foot it is very run and gun. The interior environments are like warrens, with lots of tight, dangerous spaces and fighting inside is brutal and fast.

And then your Titan lands.

And it' s like someone pasted a huge "Come get some!" banner above your head, because almost immediately, you're fighting other Titans. A flurry of machine gun fire, missile barrages, and Titan punches are flying your way. You're dashing left and right, strafing around the other Titan, blocking with your mag field, firing until you're out of ammo, and then punching him in the head. Finally, if you've done well, you rip his pilot's body from the cockpit and toss him into a wall.

I played for an hour and a half and when I done I was all sweaty and amped up. Good stuff.

My favorite moment so far was a Titan fight with a guy who knew how to dodge. We kept firing missiles and rockets at each other, dodging out of the way, capturing stuff in the vortex field, dodging out of the way, until we both ran out of ammo at the same time and just started to punch the hell out of each other. The fight seemed to last forever, until I finally ripped the pilot out and hurled his broken body into a tree.

Then punched out of my Titan because it was seconds from exploding.

You should write short stories or something, that was beautiful, a very descriptive writing style. Can't wait to try this!

I really like how power weapons in the beta are tied to burn cards. It limits their use and make sure the flow isn't concentrated on strictly their spawn spot.

This game is sogood.gif

I'm on PC, but I can't find any games, either. I saw on your stream that you aren't getting anything.

Follow up after 4 hours played on PC. Online I have yet to play anything except Attrition which is the first game type and fills right away. I sat in the domination style game type and saw just a few off the same names come and go. Same with other 2 modes but as more people get keys that will change.... I'm still loving it just like when I posted a couple hours in! I've hit level 13 and lots of new toys/perks and loadout stuff to play with.

Most importantly I ditched the mouse and keyboard for a proper 360 wired controller and all hell has broken loose. Submachine gun and rapid fire pistol with speed perks along with sidewinder anti-mech gun = pure joy. It's also endlessly enertaining bopping in from a roof and taking down a mech in a heated battle. The AI guys are pretty horrible and sometimes you will run into a building and see a few friendly and enemy AI kinda hanging out together. It looks like they heard you coming and then decided to fight. I think the AI is just cannon fodder to make the game more fast paced and that it definitely does. It's fun to kill them but would be nice if they added at least one game type with same 8 vs 8 like in big game type CoD.

Oh yes and most importantly performance on my system:
The screenshot below is what it set me with for recommended settings. I fiddled with a couple things but ultimately this is what I have played on.I honestly am graphics tweaking retarded so most of these things are jibberish to me anyway. Console far to long. :)

Really liking how Titans seem balanced so far. I was in a drawn out showdown against another Titan, and just as it got down to the wire, I got taken out by a Pilot. It's easy to forget the little guys.

Holy fuck

You can jump on a friendly Titan hang on to it and shoot while on top

!!!

Can someone make a list of all the cool things you can do in Titanfall?

*Hang on a friendly Titan and shoot while on top
*Jump onto the back of an enemy Titan, rip open its helmet and shoot its brain
*Eject from Titans
*Double jump (can you gain an extra jump after hitting sliding up against a wall, sort of like wall hugging in old school Megaman?)
*Wallrunning
*You can hang on walls and shoot
