Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

screen-9.jpg

Yeah, who was it who was fighting with me way back when about how there absolutely, positively would not be any cross-game stages when I suggested the Wii U version could also get an Awakening and Uprising stage?

That stage is a pretty basic general Smash level.

Pro Tip: Keep your control stick down most of the time while playing Space Animals.

SHFFL is good for spacing and getting quick damage, but you're better off waveshining than that.

Keep the stick down while you jump with X or Y, it makes wavedashing much easier.

Once you get the hang of that, you can shine right out of a wavedash and you can continue waveshining by jumping out of shine, wavedash, and rinse and repeat.

It takes practice but once you master short hopping, fast falling, and L-Cancelling, you're golden and you'll be able to focus on your metagame style.

The old Advanced How to Play video is a great place to start.

If you're struggling with L-cancels a good way to practice is to use Link's dair - remember you're aiming to hit your trigger button the moment the attack touches the ground.

Fastfalling comes with practice too - the moment you hit the peak of your jump you want to slam your stick down toward the ground.

Once your L-cancels are on point you can try to work them into SHFFLing with faster characters.

It just takes lots of practice. LOTS of practice.

Alright, thanks guys. One stupid question though: What buttons should I be using for Aerials and L-Cancels? I've just been using the C-Stick and Z, but that's probably wrong. I'm maining Marth if that's useful at all.

Boxer guy is weird.

Is it just me or does it seem like he doesn't "fit" with all the other characters?
Everyone else is kinda cartoony but he is a realistic human.

I just woke up, the direct was at 23:00 for me.

Good morning. Can't wait to see it.
Late to the little Mac party.

He looks OP as fuck with that KO meter

I really love that mechanic. Assuming it works like it does in Punch-Out, and I can't imagine why it wouldn't, the meter will build based on combos. That requires Mac to constantly be on the attack, which fits him perfectly. It means you can't get away with just turtling and then waiting to blast people with the OHKO, you have to go out and earn it. I imagine high level players will be able to do some fascinating things with him.

Not wrong at all, L-Cancels should definitely be done with the L or R buttons hence the name L-Cancelling.

I'm guessing you main spacies, if so, for Aerials you want to only use the C-Stick when you're doing B-Airs or strings of U-Airs. Keep that C-Stick ready for a quick F-Smash or Up-Smash to punish your opponent.

When edgeguarding, it's ideal to use the C-Stick for your B-airs so that you don't lose your momentum when you're attacking off stage. Spacies are fast fallers and one wrong buttong and you're dead.

Spacies benefit a lot more from the A-button because you can hold down and shine right away. You combo for Fox would be D-air, L-Cancel, and immediate shine.

If you played Peach or another character, you'd use the C-stick more often. It depends on your character and your playstyle.

Really it's all whatever works best for you. Some people jump with X, some people jump with Y. I learned to L-Cancel with the L button but there are plenty of people who use R or Z. I don't particularly care for Z myself though.

With Marth, I tend to use A button for Fairs when I need to quickly link them together and C-stick down for the Dair, but I personally think it's situational. I always use C-stick for Bairs though.

It really does differ from person to person, so use whatever you find best.

Well considering that is what Sakurai had said...

Maybe it's a different stage with a similar aesthetic? The WiiU version seems to include the walkway outside of the ring, maybe this one is just the ring, or has something else going on. It's a stretch, but it could be.

Sooo SmashGAF, who's down for some Project M online tomorrow before we kick off the NeoGAF Project M Tournament?

Gimme time zones and times free cause I'm hyped to scratch that Smash itch.

Please.

You know, with all the talk about Little Mac's popularity (or lack thereof) in Japan, I wonder what the Japanese reaction has been like.

Little Mac fits perfectly in this game. If there's a character that doesn't seem to fit, it's the Wii Fit Trainer (ironically).

We have several people who can help with that :p
*hopes masked and streetsahead sheds light on this*

Whatever is comfortable. I tend to use x to jump, c stick to aerial, and l to l cancel. I know lots of people who use y to jump and r to l cancel. There's no best way, really.

Well, Smash has been in their 'Spring' Directs for a while. I'm very well convinced we may see this out by then judging by how it looks and plays. You'll see. :[

Smash has been in every bimonthly Direct, not just the spring ones.

Speaking of Directs, I guess we can expect newcomers every bimonthly Direct now? :D

Little Mac is the best new character revealed since Mega Man. I've been kinda meh on pretty much every other new character, so this has got me the most pumped in a long time.

Are there any characters the Japanese want to see in particular? Do they have a Ridley equivalent? I expect Sakurai to throw them a bone too.

Tharja, Lucina, Severa, and other Fire Emblem characters.

They were already left disappointed after Ashley.

May be able to get some 1080 screenshots later. Should I skip the Little Mac ones since they were sent out with the press packs?

Looks to be the same stage.

Good thing for me, I wanted this stage in the 3DS game, looks like a good tournament stage.

Uh, I thought Little Mac was too small to join the cast of Smash fighters?

Anyway, I like the introduction of a semi-realistic styled fighter, just for the sake of variety; and feeling of machinegun-punching opponents with Mac should be truly amazing.

Pay attention to the moment they zoom in. Mac actually unleashes the punch as soon as the camera moves in, as he is no longer shown standing/charging where we can see from the zoom-in. As soon as the camera zooms, he unleashes the punch, and (presumably) proceeds to pound Bowser to 200% before unleashing the ridiculous KO move. He isn't charging the same attack the entire time.

Ah, you're right! Hm... The other thing to take into account is the fact that Sakurai spliced together two segments of the same battle, so there might be other pieces that we aren't seeing. After all, we see Mega Man doing an aerial one second, and in the next cut he's getting smashed away along with Bowser.

Essential Punch Out!! music:

Punch Out!! - Disco Kid
Punch Out!! - Soda Popinski

We also can't forget the undeniably catchy Glass Joe music!

Yeah, damn. He's kinda hot. *whew*

A man of good taste!
Long time, no see!

Little Mac giving even more credence to the E3 leak. How long until we see Mii and Pac-Man?

Hopefully we don't see them. :P (Aesthetically speaking I just really dislike both characters, but I think it's safe to say that we'll definitely be seeing both of them in the final game.)

Considering how small Little Mac is, there needs to be a big character in there to balance out the average height.

When Little Mac punches in, Alfonzo also joins in to represent the "bigger guys" and to balance out the average height: "Leave it to me!"
