Since the person who gave me my PC beta code wanted impressions...here you go!
Played a TON of matches...game is quite addictive, although it was very frustrating at first since you die so incredibly fast and from seemingly unpredictable directions (I don't play COD, but time to kill is even shorter than planetside 2 which I considered too fast). My death rate has dropped dramatically over time though so maybe I just had to get better at the game...and by that, I mean spend way more time in a Titan.
I am sooo much better in a robot than I am on foot, it's ridiculous. Something about the Titan movement just feels right to me, once I get in one if I don't get ambushed by 3 mechs at close range then I can usually last the majority of the round in that one titan. Once I got good at using the shield (protip: use it on foot soldier missile locks) and keeping my distance, my survival rate increased dramatically.
Whee, stats
Things I like a lot:
- Weapon sounds
- How the controls make advanced movement and maneuvers feel natural and easy
- Dat shotgun
- Challenge and progression system is fun, I like filling bars
Things I don't care for:
- AI mooks are hard to tell apart from real players at first. I'm getting better at it, but when you turn a corner into a dimly lit room it's still difficult to single out the actually dangerous human from the feeble helpless AI enemy. Just feels lame to die because of this.
- That urban map is extremely annoying once your team has 4 or more titans. Everyone's fat ass is in my way all the time. I've played a lot of mechwarrior, and I know urban combat can be fun with big robots, but I think these streets are too narrow and long.
- I don't want to have to go out of my way to do things I don't normally do in a match in order to get weapon upgrades. By the time I run into a lot of spectres I'm usually already in a Titan, so why do I need to kill a gorillion of them for a shotgun upgrade?
- NOBODY is playing the other playlists...it's attrition or nothing. Get those PC beta invites out, guys.
Comments on balance:
- The only decent titan weapon is the 40mm cannon, the others seem pointless. Maybe they're better with upgrades?
- That lockon pistol is dumb, why is this thing even in the game
- The SMG seems worse than the carbine in every way
- Grenades don't do much of anything, which I guess is a nice change of pace from being blown up randomly in Halo games
Most memorable moment: I got killed right after I spawned my Titan, and I rushed back to it with stims as quickly as I could. I got there to see my AI titan fighting against an enemy titan, and it was pretty low HP. I jump off a building onto my titan, which triggers some badass animation where I open the top hatch and slide into my seat from above. I get in and see my titan at like...10% hp or so. The enemy titan must not have expected the pilot to get back because he stood there reloading, then I dash forward and punch him in the mouth which puts his titan into danger state, followed by ripping the pilot out and throwing him across the map. Ended up riding that mostly-dead mech all the way to the end of the round.
So yeah, the game is a lot of fun but I dunno, doesn't seem like something I'd play long-term. This kind of game rarely holds my interest past a week. I think it really does need singleplayer and co-op modes as a way to wind down from the crazy nonstop action of the multiplayer, that would probably turn it into a day 1 buy (although obviously can't happen this close to release).
