Titanfall Beta (PC/Xbone) Impressions (No Key Begging/Trading or I will ban you!)

Still waiting on my code.

How do people feel about the "CoD with mechs" description now?

It has some truth to it, however it's much more enjoyable. Even more fast paced if that's even possible. Lol. It's pace is like bullet hell for FPS. Lol Also, on PC is it just me or do no other gametypes besides Attrition work?

Played about 6 matches. Won the first 5, lost the last.

It's so fast paced, frenetic and fun. The mobility is really liberating and the gunplay feels tight. Player health is also a huge improvement over COD. I don't have to feel that the second I have a bullet in me its too late. Titan gameplay is just as great, taking out legions of enemies or going against 2 other titans is frantically awesome.

But theres no two ways about it, the amount of AI is a huge problem. Sometimes minutes will pass without seeing an actual player character on the field. The player count is too low. Period.

But aside from that, yeah its awesome.

I am very excited to play this on my PC but yeah the Minions were always a concern of mine and now that I've seen the size of the maps, 6 actual enemies is very little. I may end up playing this game with a controller.

Agreed, but I dont really think the player count is too low, the minions are the main problem.

i'm curious, since this has been a massive worry for me regarding the game.

but say you turn a corner, and there are say, 5 enemies in quite close proximity, 1 of which is a human player, the others AI. is it immediately clear who the human player is so you can focus fire on him (since he is more adept at shooting then the crummy AI)? or would you run into the situation of being disctracted by killing AI while the 1 human player proceeded to shoot you in the face?

i feel like the AI are a means to create miss direction, essentially distracting you from what should be a solid, competative player vs player FPS? is that how it plays out?

A little more stuttering/slowdown than I was expecting, but cool. And yeah, player counts aren't high enough.

Has anyone felt the rumble when a Titan is walking away from you?! It slowly fades out & has a super realistic feel to it. Alpha didn't have that!

Wow, shit is so much fun. Fast, fluid, and that Titan gimmick is very interesting.

2 days ago I haven't even thought about buying this game, but now I'm seriously considering it.

Since the person who gave me my PC beta code wanted impressions...here you go!

Played a TON of matches...game is quite addictive, although it was very frustrating at first since you die so incredibly fast and from seemingly unpredictable directions (I don't play COD, but time to kill is even shorter than planetside 2 which I considered too fast). My death rate has dropped dramatically over time though so maybe I just had to get better at the game...and by that, I mean spend way more time in a Titan.

I am sooo much better in a robot than I am on foot, it's ridiculous. Something about the Titan movement just feels right to me, once I get in one if I don't get ambushed by 3 mechs at close range then I can usually last the majority of the round in that one titan. Once I got good at using the shield (protip: use it on foot soldier missile locks) and keeping my distance, my survival rate increased dramatically. Whee, stats

Things I like a lot:

- Weapon sounds
- How the controls make advanced movement and maneuvers feel natural and easy
- Dat shotgun
- Challenge and progression system is fun, I like filling bars

Things I don't care for:

- AI mooks are hard to tell apart from real players at first. I'm getting better at it, but when you turn a corner into a dimly lit room it's still difficult to single out the actually dangerous human from the feeble helpless AI enemy. Just feels lame to die because of this.
- That urban map is extremely annoying once your team has 4 or more titans. Everyone's fat ass is in my way all the time. I've played a lot of mechwarrior, and I know urban combat can be fun with big robots, but I think these streets are too narrow and long.
- I don't want to have to go out of my way to do things I don't normally do in a match in order to get weapon upgrades. By the time I run into a lot of spectres I'm usually already in a Titan, so why do I need to kill a gorillion of them for a shotgun upgrade?
- NOBODY is playing the other playlists...it's attrition or nothing. Get those PC beta invites out, guys.

Comments on balance:

- The only decent titan weapon is the 40mm cannon, the others seem pointless. Maybe they're better with upgrades?
- That lockon pistol is dumb, why is this thing even in the game
- The SMG seems worse than the carbine in every way
- Grenades don't do much of anything, which I guess is a nice change of pace from being blown up randomly in Halo games

Most memorable moment: I got killed right after I spawned my Titan, and I rushed back to it with stims as quickly as I could. I got there to see my AI titan fighting against an enemy titan, and it was pretty low HP. I jump off a building onto my titan, which triggers some badass animation where I open the top hatch and slide into my seat from above. I get in and see my titan at like...10% hp or so. The enemy titan must not have expected the pilot to get back because he stood there reloading, then I dash forward and punch him in the mouth which puts his titan into danger state, followed by ripping the pilot out and throwing him across the map. Ended up riding that mostly-dead mech all the way to the end of the round.

So yeah, the game is a lot of fun but I dunno, doesn't seem like something I'd play long-term. This kind of game rarely holds my interest past a week. I think it really does need singleplayer and co-op modes as a way to wind down from the crazy nonstop action of the multiplayer, that would probably turn it into a day 1 buy (although obviously can't happen this close to release).

Damn, missed DKo5's stream :/ Any archive of that?

I think there's a level of resentment that anything connected with "Call of Duty" is popular.

Remember: whatever the most popular shooter is at the moment is always going to get hated on by an audience that skews primarily console. For a while, it was Halo. Then it moved to Call of Duty.

While I do think there's a huge amount of resentment from Sony fans (seriously, I don't think I've ever met a fanbase that is as insane as following people into completely unrelated discussions to tell everyone how they don't know anything 'cause they don't like a particular company), and that's disappointing, I think it's just "top console shooter syndrome" thing.

Don't forget it's also an MP-only FPS. Looks at the reactions to Evolve for ex. People like their SP campaigns.

Try using custom SLI bits for it.

What SLI bit codes are suggested/are people using?

That said, I'm having 0 performence issues on the following:

i5 3570k @ 4.6
660 3GB SLI
16GB ram

60fps rock solid maxed out at 1080p with 4x msaa.

Not touched Nvidia inspector so no idea if SLI is even working or not but the game is rock solid for me and the IQ is decent enough. If SLI is confirmed to be working I will try some downsampling and see how it does.

Playing with a 360 controller via my HDTV and having a blast so far. Game is quite fun but not the best thing since sliced bread like its being hyped up to be.

Weird thing for me is that they take a little to much to actually explode.
I don't know, the timing is a little too generous IMHO, they should detonate quicker.

Still waiting for a code :(

The videos and streams i've watched look like so much fun! Hopefully I get in before the end of the beta :)

(saying that, if anyone has a spare XBO code knocking about and wants to pm it to me - i'll give away mine to someone else if they ever send me one in email)

I like reading peoples impressions of it in this thread though :)

As a Titan, do I deflect all bullets or only the ones, which are shot by other Titans?

seems to grab everything. Including lockon missiles fired by players. I think those in particular will get a lot less powerful once people realize how easy it is to grab them out of the air.

oh yeah, comments on PC performance:

i5 2500k @ 4.5
GTX 580 1.5GB
8GB DDR3

Runs at 60fps for the most part at every setting maxed (8x MSAA) except Insane textures...which I turned on anyways at first despite the 3gb disclaimer. But yeah, my game chugs if I do, so the warning's there for a reason.

Dips under 60 sometimes when action gets crazy. I'd also like to note that I have a 120hz monitor and the game's capped at 60.

Game REALLY does not like being alt tabbed out of. Had a crash or two and one out of memory error when I was tabbing back and forth to talk to some friends.

I have found the Titans more of a hindrance to pilot. You are better off leaving it in Auto Pilot and infing the whole time. The result is this
NO LOCK ON PISTOL.

Damn looks like people are really liking the game from the overall impressions. Only negative being the A.I? I'd have to play it to see how it feels. Do you guys think they should make the pilots visually different from the A.I? ex : custom faces for pilots and A.I wearing helmets only

Pilots should definitely be more distinctive visually, possibly different/brighter color schemes for a start.

Yeah that would be nice.

And judging from the screens and Gamersyde footage, the game is lacking in the color department too. Looks a bit bland compared to something like Destiny.

makes me wonder even more how 360 version is going to fare. maybe less ai minions or larger hit in graphics to get gameplay parity between all versions?

Why can't Xbox One even handle the Intro FMVs without ridiculous screen tearing?

Also regarding framerate, it's an inconsistent mess. When things heat up it stutters like crazy. I don't see how something that serious will be optimized between now and launch time.

Game sure is fun though.

these maps are a little bright for me lol.
such a dumb complaint, but a personal one.

i saw that theres a night map and desert map in the full game via some really low res stills from an older trailer.. hope i like the lighting in those a bit more and that they are more than just dead set bright.

love the layout of these 2 however, which should be all that matters, but its just a quirk of mine, not a big deal really.

Haven't been able to get in for hours now. Fuck this.

Hangs on the fleet of ships loading screen. Played three games when I first started 5 hours ago, haven't been able to get in since.

Using a 360 controller and I'm not having my ass kicked as much as I thought I would.

That feel, when you destroy 3 titans in 1 game. This fucking game HNGGGG.

Could someone with a GTX 680 (2GB) confirm how things run when using the highest texture quality option? Much appreciated

Well I just got done playing for about 8 hours straight on Xbox.....holy shit. That was the best time I've had with a videogame in a while. And that's coming from someone that actively dislikes CoD.

Some random thoughts:
- zero network issues
- framerate can hitch up at times in Titans, occasional screen tearing
- some aliasing, but only noticeable if you look for it
- mech combat is super satisfying
- wallrunning can be a little wonky at first, but once you get a feel for it it's awesome
- minion AI is frustrating at first, but after a couple hours you learn to differentiate them from players and they become an interesting dynamic
- minor quibbles aside, the game is FUN and super addictive, and that's the bottom line

So what happened to all that talk about needing the cloud to handle AI? Seem like the AI is less advanced than the soldiers in MGS 1 on PS1.
