Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Wonder red at next Nintendo direct

haha that 101 by Doc Louis has me putting my tin foil hat on

I want to believe

If they do have a conference again like sony and ms then I'd expect at least 2 characters and at least one be 3rd party . gotta get dat pop by the crowd

Let's have fun and say that Sakurai -- full of inspiration and backed by capable staff (Bandai-Namco) -- will add as many newcomers to SSB4 as he did in Brawl. In which case, he could easily unveil five newcomers at E3 2014.

I think the following would be pretty hype:

- Palutena
- Impa
- Mii
- Ridley
- Pac-Man

My one problem with Miis are that I don't think they will last forever, which means they can't be in future Smash games. I guess however they can use the default Mii look, because they are a part of Nintendo history after all.

he didn't predict rosalina tho
The E3 leak didn't "predict" Rosalina & Luma because he was speaking specifically to E3. And it's quite possible Little Mac, Mii and Pac-Man were considered for an E3 reveal, but then Nintendo decided to stick with Villager, Wii Fit Trainer and Mega Man, and save the others for sustained hype.

talk to me about costumes, how have they worked in smash traditionally, I know there was a male wii fit trainer in a screenshot at some point, what's going on

NES Little Mac changes his ring attire after he wins a match. He is very fashionable.

I should've known this from the first time I saw him in those pink warm ups.

Dat Blue is BADASS.

Agreed. They all look nice though.

With two exceptions ever (Wario in Brawl and Male Wii Fit Trainer), total model changes for costumes haven't been done. There have been hats for Pokemon, though.

People are assuming/hoping there will be a female Villager, as well.

You mean at E3, right? Because I think it's quite likely there are more than two more newcomers yet to be revealed. I think Sakurai will target a similar number of newcomers to what was added in Brawl. He always aims to outdo himself. Plus, Pac-Man and Mii are quite likely for reasons already discussed... and I'm inclined to think that Palutena leak was legit. So that's at least three more right there, before we get to the current Fire Emblem rep, and whatever other tricks Sakurai has up his sleeve.

The majority are just palette swaps.

A couple get custom textures like Ness (Mr. Saturn shirt), Captain Falcon (Blood Falcon), and Dark Link with glowing eyes or whatever.

Pikachu/Pichu/Jigglypuff get accessories like bandanas, hats, etc.

Wario's the only one who has had two completely different outfits.

At the core of each newcomer is "uniqueness." I think it'd be more fun to try and predict newcomers through the lens of what might make playing them unique.

Villager can pick up and pocket projectiles and items, staying true to the spirit of Animal Crossing. Wii Fit Trainer incorporates exercise into all of her animations -- even when she's teetering on a ledge. Mega Man has a ranged projectile for his neutral normal, and the variable weapon system. Rosalina & Luma is a "puppet" character, separating to handle different threats or joining together to combo foes. And Little Mac dominates the ground game with super armor and a OHKO move, while he struggles in the air with weak recovery.

Really, I think the uniqueness focus makes Ridley more likely. His immense size could be his gimmick. A character that is adept in the air but slow on the ground -- a character whose air game is balanced by the fact he's such a huge target. He could grasp foes in his talons and carry them off, DK-style. He could be Smash's "Sentinel" in terms of size, with carefully allocated hit boxes to make him playable.

It just seems like it would be a lot of fun. :)

Yea I was talking about E3 I forgot to mention that part lol. And I agree. I hope there are a lot more. I'm all for getting as many characters in as possible at this point. Getting Namco-Bandai on board, with all their wealth of experience, was a great move by Nintendo.

You guys realize Simon's inclusion would be at the cost of Snake's.
I wouldn't mind having both. Sakurai can change the "rules" of his own game. Heck, we see it with Villager, previously ruled out by Sakurai. If Sakurai wants them and Konami is willing, we could have both Snake and Simon.

Man, a Castlevania rep would be fantastic for the music... Especially if they drew from both the Igavania games and the Lords of Shadow series.

I think the best case scenario would be 8 newcomers revealed before launch and 8 newcomers hidden in the game. (Or 9/10 pre-launch, 7/6 hidden depending on how many characters they want to reveal). Not counting Snake and Sonic, Brawl only had 4 newcomers locked (one of them being a simple reimagining of Young Link) and we knew basically every newcomer before the game came out. Most of the unlocks were veterans -- I didn't really like that much.

An idea I'd be open to is having all the veterans and pre-release newcomers make up the starting roster with the unlocks consisting only (or mostly, if we still have some hidden vets) of newcomers.

Only characters that would really get me super hyped is Chibi Robo, Pac Man (hope his reveal is as great as Mega Man's was), Anna, that's really it. Quite a few other characters I'd be really excited about too but not as much.

My hype inducing one would be:
Palutena
Ridley
Mewtwo
Takamaru
Chrom/Lucina

I really liked the idea of a LM fake out with Luigi going around a haunted mansion with his flashlight and vacuum cleaner then Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde appear and Luigi is cornered. Suddenly they turn blue and Pacman appears chasing them away.

Oh man, that has to be Pac-Man's reveal trailer, right there.

For Ridley, it would be great if he appears behind Samus and does the same height comparison to Samus that she did to Little Mac... only this time, Samus is the short fry. :P

Simon would be incredible. But only the Ayami Kojima version. Man, even Soma would be amazing, but that would really be pushing it, and will never happen.

Actually you have a good idea about Pac Man Inclusion trailer.

Also I would like to mention I can't wait to get more pictures of Little Mac soon from Daily Image.

Speaking of reveal trailers, I really like Little Mac’s, but I think it would’ve been funny if they went in a completely different direction and made it a fake-out.

Imagine the trailer started out with a bunch of gameplay clips showing off some Assist Trophies: we’d get to see Skull Kid, Ashley, Mother Brain, and some of the old Brawl ATs in action. Then, about 30 seconds into the video, Samus picks up an Assist Trophy, Little Mac jumps out, Samus does the size-up thing, Mac punches her, and then the “Little Mac Punches In!” frame appears, followed by his gameplay trailer. Something to make people think Mac was returning as an AT.

They could then tease the next newcomer by showing shattered glass on the ground... a trail of shards leading to a broken Assist Trophy shell... and then past it... to a curtain around which Waluigi is watching, half-veiled in shadow... waiting...

I think a Golden Sun rep would be enticing to Sakurai insofar as the Psynergy abilities would make for a crazy move-set.

But beyond that uniqueness, the characters themselves look a tad generic (I say this as someone who loved Golden Sun 1), and the series isn't quite what it used to be.

- Pac-Man
- Mii
- Palutena
- Ridley
- Mewtwo

Only Pac-Man, Mewtwo, and Mii seem plausible at this point. Palutena, Ridley have outside chances, but I'd be shocked if they got in.

I'd have no idea how the hell they'd make the Wonderful 101 work, but it would be AMAZING.

I love the idea but it wasnt mine. Someone here suggested it here shortly after Rosalina was revealed but I thought it was pretty clever.

I don't see there being 16 newcomers for this title but I do hope we have some hidden characters. Assuming that the title releases in the fall/holiday season and we still have a direct with a new smash trailer in each direct the reveals could go like this:

April- Takamaru
June/E3 direct- Pacman
August- Dixie Kong
October- Mewtwo returns
Smash Direct- Ridley

Leave Palutena, Chrom/Lucina, Mii and Impa as hidden characters.

I'm sure one of the Directs will be "wasted" on Snake.

You guys really think they'd classify Mewtwo as a "newcomer?" I mean, I could see it going either way, depending on how much they retool him and/or whether missing a game merits "newcomer" status. I think they'd sooner reveal him as a veteran. It would just be a REALLY exciting veteran update -- probably enough to merit an appearance in a Direct (like Luigi, etc). You know, with a short gameplay montage, Sonic-style, rather than a CGI trailer.

At this point there are only two more new comers I really want. That would be Ridley and Palutena. Before we know anything my most wanted list went.

1 Megaman
2 Ridley
3 Little Mac
4 Palutena
5 Rosalina

Also I want Mewtwo and most of the Brawl cast to return but especially a Ganondorf with a unique move set. I'm pretty happy with the new comers we've got so far, but I'm greedy and so hope for Ridley and Palutena. :)

Tagline in his trailer should be "Mewtwo Strikes Back!"

Five newcomers that would get me excited even if there's little chance they'd be revealed there?

-Avatar/Robin (Fire Emblem Awakening)
-Pokemon Trainer from X/Y
-Ridley (I'm not even a big Metroid fan, but if they could make it playable it could be really interesting)
-Hades (Kid Icarus Uprising)
-Demise (Skyward Sword)

For a more realistic reveal list for E3, replace Demise and Hades with Palutena and Waluigi (Since those two seem like characters that would certainly be left hidden if they're in).

Yep. Most iconic Castlevania character right there and emblematic of the NES era. I want classic 8-bit Simon though, barbarian style, not the silly anime one.

Blasphermy. Kojima's style isn't "silly anime", unless you are talking about the Dawn of Sorrow Artsyle, which Simon was never done in that style.

Obvious colours for Mac are the circuit colours plus verus mode player 2:

rDEYNPw.jpg

(Google Image Search result, I did not make this image)

Though I notice there isn't really a red option so I guess one possibility is to use Glass Joe's colours. A slightly shoddily done recolour to show how this could look:

DbVGeWY.jpg

If that title defense blue is a real alt color, I'm adding Mac to my Team of Azure (mains) (Marth, Pit, Lucas, Megaman & Rosalina at current).

Those MURICA stripes are great too.

Takamaru

Would be pretty hype for me personally.

They could then tease the next newcomer by showing shattered glass on the ground... a trail of shards leading to a broken Assist Trophy shell... and then past it... to a curtain around which Waluigi is watching, half-veiled in shadow... waiting...

Hm. Teaser trailers on top of reveal trailers would be pretty damn awesome.
Especially that one. ;)

I got Mac so up next on my most-wanted-but-won't-necessarily-happen list are (in rough order of desirability)

Ridley
Waluigi
Shulk
Matthew
Captain Rainbow

I think two of these characters have an actual chance.

One thing that people haven't mentioned that I think could be used to justify a Wonderful 101 rep is that it would be the best representation for Wii U/3DS era Nintendo (along with Palutena perhaps).

Brawl had several reps that were contemporary characters, like Ike, Lucas, TP design Link and Zelda, and Lucario. Then you had some relatively recent reps, such as Olimar, Toon Link and Wario Ware Wario.

So far the most recent rep we have is Wii Fit trainer, who was introduced almost 7 years ago. Then there's the slightly older Rosalina, and everyone after that is ancient nintendo history.

I'm not saying that it is an obvious, set pattern, but I think this perspective does make W101s chances look a little better.
