Rayman Legends on PS4 & Xbox One: Uncompressed textures, no load times

The game was also pushed up a week to Feb 18th so woot.

Dammit I bit and got this game during the steam sale because it as coming out same day as Thief. I may have to double dip now that they moved the date up.

Does anyone know if the next gen version will have online coop? Or is it still going to be local only?

I seriously doubt "uncompressed" textures are going to be noticeable. SERIOUSLY DOUBT!

No loading times are always welcome of course but they don't make for a compelling reason to double dip.

That said, the game is good.

How large is the download for this game? Smaller than 5GB? That would explain the removed load times, just throw the entire game into RAM!

Interesting. When Ancel said that they would occasionally use some uncompressed textures without realizing it on the WiiU, some people pointed to that as a sign of the system's power, but ultimately, as far as we know, it used compressed textures. With the PS4 and Xbox One version using uncompressed textures all the time, for everything, it must also demonstrate the new consoles' power. That RAM is being put to good use.

I sold my Xbox 360 version of the game for $45 as soon as the version on next gen consoles was announced.

So yeah, the better textures, faster loading times plus the convinence of starting the game simply by saying its name (Xbox One) is enough for me to want the next gen version even though I already had it/played it on the Xbox 360. I like the game that much.

Why single out XBO for this?

Jan 2013- Only for Wii U

Jan 2014- For Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, playstation 3, playstation 4, Playstation Vita, PC

What a difference a year makes.

Still with this? They're good with a touchscreen :)
Yeah, converting a platformer to a touch only runner game is such a great idea.

I guess people are readier than I thought for Mario on iOS.

I still can't believe that when the game released the conversation was about which version had the better Murfy levels when really, however they're played they drag the whole game down.

Been waiting to purchase legends for this version on Ps4. Camera mode sounds tailor made for Share button.

Can't wait to see the uncompressed textures within camera mode and start sharing. Good stuff, will buy.

Compressed textures is not a complaint I ever saw with the other versions. But hey, if this gets a few more people to play it, that's cool.

Watch, you will see it brought up constantly now as a major complaint.

The game is already beautiful so I cannot see how this would sway anymore people (other than being on another platform).

Would love 29.99, but 39.99 isn't to bad. with the enhancements as well.

Wish another game would learn...

Hope Rayman outsells it

What a difference a year makes.

True, but the Wii U version is vastly superior to any of the rest. Playing the game with a second player on the tablet is one of the most fun gaming experiences you'll ever have.

It probably would have sold more in Jan 2013 though; since it had the Wii U exclusive hype and no competition in the market.

Quite often the closeup foreground layers have a slightly low-res fuzzy or posterised appearance that doesn't look in keeping with the painted style so that may be improved in these new versions. I've checked the first level on PS3 and the WiiU demo and it's equally visible. Origins had the same imperfections on PS3 and to a much greater extent (even without manual zooming) PS Vita.

Background layers are affected a bit too but you really have to look for it unless there's a cutscene closeup (like Murphy slapping you to start the game), except on Vita and I assume 3DS.

Looking at DigitalFoundry's (JPEG) screenshot comparison, most of the textures are identical but in a couple of scenes PS3 and 360 share lower quality ground textures and in one shot Wii U even has a higher quality grass texture than PC.

There's 6 comparison shots left-to-right, I've used PS3 in place for PS360 as the quality matches but 360's gamma makes everything look darker.

There's some questionable questions and answers in this interview so prepare yourself!

Rayman Legends Interview: PS4/Xbox One Benefits, Optimization, eSRAM Challenges And More

Ravi Sinha: How did you go about asset optimization and texture compression for the next gen version?

Emile Morel:
Basically the power of the PS4 and the Xbox One is allowing us to have a global optimization of all the game’s assets, making the whole game “lighter” if you want. This is how we are able to get rid of all the loading times in the game. Since the levels we’re loading don’t weigh as much as before in terms of data, we can load them faster and get rid of all the transitions. As for the textures, the power behind the next gen consoles is allowing us to have some uncompressed textures this time, making the visuals of the games look even sharper than before.
So basically using more modern, efficient texture compression supported by the new GPU's achieves the same or higher quality in smaller file sizes?

Ravi Sinha: Other than the graphics and added visual flair, what kind of benefits do the next gen consoles bring to Rayman Legends?

Emile Morel: To me, one of the biggest benefits brought by the next gen consoles to Rayman Legends is clearly the absence of loading times. In these versions of the game you’ll see that when you jump inside a painting the level immediately starts, without any transition. It may sound like a small thing, but when you’ve worked on a game during 2 years and got used to these loading times, when you play the game and you don’t have them anymore, it really changes the experience. Now the navigation in the game is far more fluid and jumping in and out of a level has never went so fast !
Other than that, I love the Camera Mode we implemented on PS4. By just pressing the touchpad of the PS4 controller, you freeze the game and enter this special mode. There, by moving your fingers on the touchpad (like you would do on a smartphone) you can zoom in and out on the picture and change the frame, then when you’re happy with your picture you just have to press the Share button to show this photo to everybody. This mode will allow players to be creative with the game (trying to create the best photos), and it’s also a great way to spot and discover all the small details our artists put in the visuals and in the animations of the game. The challenges on Xbox One are also a nice addition to the game, bringing new types of achievements to the game.

Ravi Sinha: Rayman Legends on the Xbox One will be the first game, I think, that will be utilizing ‘challenges’. Can you please explain how these will work?

Emile Morel: Actually, I think that all Xbox One games are offering at least one “challenge”. In Rayman Legends, you’ll get 10 challenges to complete in a limited amount of time. You can think of them as special achievements that you have to complete during one week. So basically, right after the release of the game, the first challenge will be available for players during a week, the week after it will be gone and replaced by the second challenge, and so forth, this will last during 10 weeks. So it means that only the quickest and the most assiduous players will be able to complete these 10 challenges. To give you an idea of what to expect, here are 2 examples of these challenges: “Get at least 700 Lums in 10 paintings when possible”, “Complete 15 paintings without taking a hit”.
Has nothing to do with delaying trade-ins of course, like the tedious Awesomeness achievement/trophy exacerbated by UBI's flaky stat/leaderboard servers.

Ravi Sinha: Is the 60fps on next gen consoles unlocked? [Can it go beyond 60 fps?]

Emile Morel:
I’m not on the tech side of the development, but I don’t think we’ll be able to run games beyond 60fps on next gen consoles (but again I’m not an expert on this so someone could prove me wrong). And honestly 60fps is already very fluid for gamers, so I’m not sure going beyond would bring anything to video games right now.
As for Rayman Legends, on next gen just like on current gen, you’ll see that the game always runs at 60fps, bringing this great fluidity you need when playing a fast paced platformer like this one.
Best to keep this in mind for what's coming up.

Ravi Sinha: The frame rate and resolution differences between PS4 and Xbox One has been subjected to much debate. What is your opinion on this? Does the difference really matter in the long run given the fact that the new console cycle isn’t expected to be any shorter?

Emile Morel:
As always people are trying to find differences between these 2 consoles to find out which one is the best and which one they should buy. I totally understand that, but the truth is these 2 consoles are very close to each other on a tech point of view and in the end the only thing that will really matter is the catalogue of games these consoles will offer. This is really what should make you buy one system or the other: the games. As for Rayman Legends on next gen consoles, I can honestly tell you that I don’t see any differences between one version or the other. Both versions run at 60fps in 1080p, so there will be no battle on this side!
Why not both? Games and performance.

Ravi Sinha: From a development standpoint, what are your thoughts on the tech differences between the two new machines? Are they closely matched?

Emile Morel:
Yes, like I was saying the tech differences are not so big between these 2 consoles and in the end these small differences should have absolutely no impact on the gaming experiences these consoles will offer.Developing a game for these 2 consoles is quiet close, so it means the games existing on both consoles should be very similar.
No impact at all! As we've already seen.. the next answer kind of promotes the importance of 1080p 60fps again!

Less than a couple of days until U/C release and no media from the next-gen versions. Videos aren't going to show the slight improvements to texture quality but the instant loads and platform specific features I'm expecting UBI to show off tomorrow.

Nobody seems to have received the game early and posted impressions either.

Eh, the whole FPS question makes me wonder how much he REALLY knows on the technical side as it doesn't really matter to go beyond 60 FPS unless we're going to somehow get 120 hz support for consoles, and TVs seem content to use that for MotionFlow garbage instead while I doubt they'd bother to keep monitors in mind (and I need to look at HDMI options there anyway.) I wouldn't be surprised if those games were technically capable of extreme highly FPSes, maybe even in the thousands, but doesn't mean a damn thing without a refresh rate that can show that and consoles are more or less stuck at 60 hz there anyway.

I'm more interested if Wii U-esque functionality is there for PS4/Vita(/touch pad?) as that could make it a clear cut definitive version, doubly so without that angle forced on you.

Hoping gamefly sends me this on PS4. Going through Origins on Vita right now and really enjoying it but I heard the touchscreen stuff is terribad in Legends so I want the PS4 version. Vita can be a tad annoying to hold run on due to those triggers so I'm excited to play with that sexy DS4.

Anyone know if the Murfy parts on PS4 will be like how they are on the PS3 or how they are on the Vita? (I prefer the way the PS3 handled that).

There's been no indication that Murphy section controls have been changed for PS4.

The touchpad's for the freeze camera mode zoom and scratching lucky tickets.

Murfy snaps to things he can interact with as you get close to them. Then you press O and he'll do his thing.

Not sure if that's the same as the PS3 version.

decided i'm going digital. when can i expect this to go live on xbl? midnight?

It went up on the Xbox store a little bit ago...but it's listed at 60 bucks when every retailer has this at 40. Ugh. Hope they get it fixed!

The lifetime sales across ALL platforms for this platforming masterpiece is just criminal!!!
Not sure it will get anymore love on the next gen consoles.

Yep. Guessing this will be straighten out by the afternoon. At least I hope so. Sent tweets to people.

Might need to make a thread about it though depending on how long it takes.

Has anyone had a chance to try and use an Arcade Stick with this or Origins?

I'm buying this on Friday with the titanfall controller but i have two friends over for the night and i was planning some co-op wich would force someone to use the KI stick :/

Yeah I tweeted people too! I hope it doesn't take too long! I'm kinda bummed out about it.

I imagine it would work fine, Rayman Origins was playable on the Wii remote and it only involves 2 buttons last I remembered.
