Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Sakurai probably reads this thread since if it's on the internet, and it's Smash related, he knows about it. Especially considering how popular GAF has been getting these past few years. What puzzles me is how Diddy Kong hasn't been revealed yet. Maybe Friday.

I honestly think that dumb REGGIE IN SMASH petition he keeps pimping at press events is supposed to be leading to a Mii trailer that uses Reggie and a few other Nintendo figures. I can't think of any other reason to keep referencing such a dumb petition that's asking for someone only a fraction of Nintendo's audience even know about, let alone still find the years old memes funny.
Haha, that thing. I forgot about the petition. I'd agree, his positivity about that seems like an indication that Mii is probably in.

I thought the Mii was an obvious choice for Brawl too though, and that never came to be.

So I've noticed a lot of discussion of Wonder-Red pop up, alongside discussion of most wanted newcomers... All this made me realize that Wonder-Red (or The Wonderful 100 in general, rather) is my most wanted newcomer. I look a good look through my expected and wanted newcomers, and while I'm excited to see characters like Takamaru, Robin, and Mii, I think I'd be most excited about The Wonderful 100. Now, doubt starts to arise when thinking about how the character would be represented in Smash Bros., but aside from that (Sakurai would make it work somehow), I think it's a very real possibility, and I believe it makes sense.

The Wonderful 100 would translate to Smash Bros. very well, and I believe they'd be an appropriate addition not only for that reason, but also because of the history of their game. Yes, by itself, The Wonderful 101 isn't exactly very noteworthy. I mean, it's an AMAZING game, but when it comes to Nintendo as a whole, it's just not very important. But what's interesting about it is how the game came to be. Originally, Platinum Games wanted to use Nintendo characters in The Wonderful 101. So, instead of having 100 Wonderful Ones, we'd be controlling 100 different Nintendo characters. It would have been a concept not unlike Smash Bros. Had that original intent been carried out, the game probably would have seen a lot more interest and would have no doubt been more significant to Nintendo (but I believe making original characters was the right way to go).

With that in mind, I think The Wonderful 100's inclusion would make sense, along with the fact that they're so well suited for Smash Bros. We also know that Sakurai was visiting Platinum Games during the beginning of development for Smash Bros., and it's very possible that Sakurai was visiting Platinum Games for the use of their characters in Smash Bros. Of course, it could just as likely been something entirely unrelated, but still. It also wouldn't surprise me if Sakurai and Kamiya had been in talks long before The Wonderful 101 was unveiled to the public as Project P-100 due to the similarity of Kamyia's original concept of The Wonderful 101 to Smash Bros. Kamiya may have initially reached out to Sakurai about his idea for advice or whatever. I know all of this is just speculation, but my point is that's it's very possible that The Wonderful 100 may have been a consideration for Smash Bros. since before we even knew of the game. After all, Roy was put into Melee before his game was even released. The fact that The Wonderful 101 is fairly recent and not the most significant game to Nintendo may not matter as much as people think. If the developers really want it, it can happen. I mean, that's how we got Snake, after all.

EDIT: Regarding the Ridley talk... Remember, it doesn't have to be either/or! Ridley can be a stage hazard and a playable character. As a great man once said... "Leave it to me!" - Alfonzo

The Bigfoot Pizza should be playable.

I think both TW101 and Bayonetta would be smart inclusions from a marketing standpoint. In TW101's case, enough time will have transpired for the game to have a small (but strong) following, and TW101's inclusion would retroactively market that game to the new people who pick up a WiiU for Smash (and those who get it on the larger 3DS userbase). Bayonetta, meanwhile, already has a strong fanbase, and Nintendo saw fit to rescue her franchise -- one may reason that Nintendo would like their investment to pay off, and there's no better advertising to Nintendo fans than through a Smash Bros. game (see also: renewed Western interest in EarthBound and Kid Icarus; Western interest in Fire Emblem; etc).

score, bought a copy of Brawl at a thrift store for $3 today :D

will dust off the old Wii and play some online tonight , let's go snake + falcon + game and watch king group B^)

wonder if my saved videos are still there

I expect lag too

So that's at least three more right there, before we get to the current Fire Emblem rep, and whatever other tricks Sakurai has up his sleeve.

How awesome would it be if the 3DS version could read your StreetPass data and pull your Avatar from that?

Along the same lines, if that worked you could do the same for your Animal Crossing Villager.

And then you could transfer that data to the WiiU version. The cross-platform customization alluded to by Sakurai. :-O

How did SmashGAF respond to the Brawl final roster?
All I remember (and maybe I imagined it) is people reading "ROB" and thinking it was referring to the robot of the same name in Star Fox 64.

Kind of like initial Western reactions to Roy in Melee: "There's a new character named Roy? Awesome, he's my favorite Koopaling."

Mii has appeared in quite a few games that would be good for moves. A hang-glider recovery move from Pilotwings Resort? Swords, shields and sorcery from Find Mii? A trombone slide smash attack from Wii Music? Smacking tennis balls from Wii Sports Tennis, which can bounce around the arena? The Final Smash could even reference the Mii Plaza, with a stampede of Miis rushing across the screen -- including every Mii on your 3DS or WiiU system.

I figured that Pac Man would use Hang Glider (From Pac Man 2 SNES) but I want Sakurai to surprise me with Mii. I can see a lot of potential moves from many different games, so I think I will be pleased with what he had to show with Mii.

Just occurred to me: Sakurai confirmed 25 newcomers and veterans in Brawl prior to the game's release.

We are currently at 23 confirmed newcomers and veterans for SSB4. Chances are we'll go beyond 25 before SSB4 is out. I wonder how far, though.

You are not thinking bigger yet. We are almost reaching to the number that would beat Super Smash Bros Melee's full roster which is 26.

I have hard time to believe that we might getting a starting roster that are way bigger than Melee's final roster numbers.

Incidentally, who is this guy? Talks about verifying who Sal's source was after E3 last year and his name seemed to come up often in regards to the MvsC3 leaks a couple years ago as well.

Lupinko isn't leaker for SSB4 at all. He only leaked mostly Capcom games (MVC3, UMVC3, SFxT) and Mortal Kombat 9.

EDIT: Regarding the Ridley talk... Remember, it doesn't have to be either/or! Ridley can be a stage hazard and a playable character. As a great man once said... "Leave it to me!" - Alfonzo

I've always maintained that there ought to be more representation of "newer" material surrounding the roster of inclusion because Smash ought to be a representation of Nintendo's past, present and future, but that it may be hard with Nintendo's lack of any new character franchises. It says a lot that Wii Fit Trainer (and Mii probably) are so far the only inclusions of new franchises that haven't been represented if only because Nintendo really didn't come out with much new in the latest half a decade.

So really I always believed that TW101 would have been perfect for that very reason. It's Platinum made, yes, but the IP is Nintendo's and judging by the ways they pimped it, they didn't seem to be afraid to show it. It's the most character driven new thing Nintendo got with incredibly recognizable faces to go with it, and the characters are all combat oriented. Hell, the final chapter of the game even provides them with an appropriate "Final Smash" move.

All the characters in the game felt like they were made with the express purpose to be an "all-star cast". They've got their own logo, distinct personalities, defined powers and own renders. Just for shits and giggles I figured I'd do a quick photoshop just to see whether the character art can really blend with the style of Smash and honestly, I think it works. They look great on covers.

I do see a lot of people saying that it'd be hard to get the characters working and I realize to get a true TW101 rep you'd have to do a tag team character; but this is a game being directed by a man who managed to make Ice Climbers, ROB, Mr. Game and Watch and Wii Fit Trainer into fighters. If there's anyone who can make it work, it's Sakurai. It'd suck to see a brand new recognizable IP turned into mere assist trophies when they have such richness to them.

All I remember (and maybe I imagined it) is people reading "ROB" and thinking it was referring to the robot of the same name in Star Fox 64.

I like to think of ROB 64 as R.O.B. from the future (i.e. a new model).

That's not what I was getting at, nor is that guy on GameFAQ's Lupinko in the first place. I just mean he seems to come up often in these types of 'leak' situations and was wondering if it was somebody off GAF's GameFAQ's account or something of the sort.

Im not sure Sakurai can read english good enough to "benefit" from reading on here. When I tweet him I have to do it in Japanese.

Gonna make a self bet:

Tomorrow's pic will be Little Mac in the 3DS Punch Out ring clarifying it's the same stage as on Wii U.

Or Wii U shot of Mac and a technique description.

Oh CAW Evolution? That's Ryce's account.

I think you are underestimating the mental capabilities of a man who develops games for a living, and especially overestimate how difficult it is to learn how to comprehend a language.

I'm not native English myself, but I've always been able to read even complex English constructs once I had a basic grasp of the language. Just because Sakurai might not be able to speak/write English sentences well enough to feel confident without a translator at events doesn't mean that he can't read (or speak) English at all. It's not like we're having some super deep scientific discussions in this thread.

Now that Smash Bros. finally has a "real" fighter with Little Mac, I'm curious -- what general archetypes are left? I can't really think of anything off the top of my head. The bases seem mostly covered.

Yeah, I don't think discussions on GAF would be very easy for him to follow. When I met him backstage at Press Start two years ago, his first words to me were "Nice to meet you", but the rest of our conversation was in Japanese, lol.

Have you seen the guy talk? It's always Japanese and he has to have a translator at the ready for him. I highly doubt he could read this thread without translating it.

Beaten. But yeah. Samurai.

In my experience as an interpreter of Japanese, I find a lot of people understand more English than they claim and often can write or read English well enough even if they can't speak it confidently (Kamiya, for example). In official interviews and such I imagine it's important to not give the wrong impression or be misquoted, so it's easier to rely on an interpreter if you don't feel confident enough in your own skills.

Can't think of any myself in the more general sense but I'm sure Sakurai has a few more up his sleeve.

A staff user would still be one I guess.

edit: Takamaru too lol

Did he leak any details?

Oh, no, I wish. My friend told him that I had played all of his games and that I was a huge fan, so I gushed a little about KI:U. I told him that I was a big MOTHER3 fan and that I was really looking forward to the new Smash, but that's about it. There really wasn't much solid info about the game back then (August 2012), so I felt weird about asking too much.

Wouldn't you be more comfortable talking in the language you're more familiar with, either?

Yes, I've seen him talk. But just because he prefers using a translator doesn't mean he doesn't know English.
I can read and understand Spanish, but I have problems forming a sentence on my own, let alone speak it fluently enough to make actually complex sentence constructs that would be required at a presentation.

Staff user, but Palutena is probably in the game, so we're covered

I reckon Sakurai a rate gud so-art n so ye'd be a wazak if ye think he would ave a ard time with owt in this thread.

A W101 character would be amazing and I would absolutely love it, but I seriously can't think of how to make it work and be faithful to the game.

Just because so many things would have to be happening at once.

You could have the main cast (or some of them) switch out Pikmin/Pokemon Trainer style with the same basic attacks, but the selected characters unique Unite Morphs as a special or two or three.

Personally, I think a Wonder Red assist trophy is more likely, if anything.

What about goddess or god like Palutena, Medusa and Hades?
