The Order 1886 Gameplay Footage

Decent graphics but that gameplay doesn't look good at all. It's the same thing we have seen million times over and what looks like not much more. With some basic QTE's thrown in it feels like I have already seen this so many times during the last generastion. A shame really.
This obsession with ambition is really something I'm growing tired of.

Quite frankly, I'm much more interested in high quality, highly polished takes on old ideas. Few games truly execute everything to perfection so working to refine what already exists can result in some really incredible experiences.

The Last of Us, horrible performance issues aside, was well loved for this very reason. It did nothing new, but it was a remarkable experience.

The Order seems to be focusing on refining an existing genre while offering some unique ideas and a pretty original setting for a shooter. That might be enough.

When the SNES was introduced on the heels of the NES most games created for the system were evolution of previous ideas and are remembered very fondly as a result. Super Mario World is more Mario, but I think it's better than everything that preceded it yet it could never have existed without those games. Refining gameplay is often better than trying to deliver totally new ideas every time as many of those ideas often fall flat.

We have enough games in development to allow for these types of experiences. We don't need every developer trying to define the gaming industry.

looks fucking boring, just like uncharted

so fucking tired of these linear tps games, and QTEs too! oh goody.

I want a ps4 but when i get one it wont be for uncharted or this

I'm the exact opposite. Can't stand open world games due to them just being barren most of the time. Linear games are way more enjoyable for me

two more :)

I'm also in this boat. The allure of open world games has vanished for me.

Good thing both types (and more) are still being made!

seriously, this fucking industry. Talk about creatively bankrupt.
There was more creativity and original ideas last gen than the entire 16-bit generation, yet people are still in love with those games.

Graphics look great as expected. As for the gameplay its hard to tell from how very little we saw. I generally like TPS's more than any other shooter type so I am down. As for the corridor shooter comments off of the 20 seconds of gameplay seen... if the game were only 80 seconds long you may have an argument aka wait for more...

It seriously looks gorgeous, and I know it's the shortest sliver to judge it on, but it does still just seem like an ordinary cover based AAA shooter though :(

I think most would agree that a lack of multiplayer is not good news. And most people would prefer 60 fps. That is why people have been losing their shit about the lower fps on xbone games.
No it's not. If you're talking about the multiplatform comparisons, that's almost always because it's comparing the performance of the same game on different platforms. If, say, a certain game runs at around half the framerate on one console than it does on the other, that's why people lose their shit - not only is one of the versions smoother, but it highlights the gulf between the two platforms. It's not the same thing as what we have here; you only have one version of this game. Obviously people have their preferences with framerates, but that is not the only reason why people were losing their shit over framerate talks recently.

I want to see more environments, obviously, but so far, it's looking fairly good. I'm not seeing the problem with this, save for a lot of folks who just love to bash game X or Y because it's not on their system of choice.

jeebuz..this game is really making some people's pent up frustration come out or some shit...some of these comments smh

About the footage

Pros
Game looks absolutely bonkers visually...clothes physics, character models, the atmosphere = amazing
Fantastic setting
TPS (I love TPS way more than FPS)
QTE endings are branched, this makes multiple playthroughs more interesting

Cons
They should have shown off the game more. I mean I want to see the secondary fire option for the weapons in action in gameplay.

Are there collectibles? This type of games NEEDS tons of them that links to that era. Should have shown at least one

Any investigating on your own? I think this was mentioned to be in the game but a glimpse of it would have been nice

There was supposed to be a 'trailer' in addition to the b-roll footage right? They haven't released it yet?

I love both types. I feel sorry for anybody who can't get enjoyment out of a great tightly-scripted action adventure game, though. Uncharted 2 is one of the best games ever, and I'm sure it's at least as linear as this game will be, if not moreso.

I liked it, and it looked really good... but that's it? Just 3 minutes of footage? Disappointing that it's so damn short, but otherwise this looks great and pretty fun.

I was hoping to see more of the supernatural side to this game, you know immortality, werewolf looking creatures, things like that.

The game also doesn't need MP, they did say that they would rather focus on an amazing SP than compromise. I think this is a glory of working with WWS, they let you do what you want.

No, it doesn't need multiplayer, but a TPS such as this seems like it would be perfect with a competitive multiplayer mode. RAD did say they want to focus on the single player mode to make it amazing, but the few seconds of gameplay we've seen looks far from amazing, GAMEPLAY wise. Graphics are nice, but looks like your standard TPS. Will need to see more but this gameplay trailer was not a good way to unveil the gameplay.

LOL. They are dreaming up whole worlds for us, complete with their own lore, science and whatnot. Then they physically design and render its content, beautifully I might add. And its not a static world like a film, but an interactive world.

And then they show it to people, and because it's not reinventing the wheel it's basically creatively bankrupt. Good fucking grief. I hope none of you ever drool over, say, a new TV or a new car.

No kidding. I'm not even sure what people were expecting? We all knew it was going to be a TPS. From the short clips they've shown us this game looks incredible so far, and it's RAD's first big console game so it's good they have a clear vision for what they want to do.

And I have bets the next Halo or Gears of War will pretty much be the same old games.

To be fair, people bitch about those games too. That's what separates enthusiasts from, you know, actual real gamers.

Mind blowing visuals, especially for in-game. But I guess I was expecting so much more from the gameplay video. It looks fun, just no where near the levels it had been hyped to.

I expect no less from you man keep it up ;)
After all your gushing over Ryse your reaching caricature status at this point.
We were all a part of the ryse gameplay debacle that reach thousands of posts before the game came out, and i was a part of that criticism.

If you read the ryse official thread it was not until i played the game, just like many others in that thread, that enjoyed the game and thought the graphics were amazing.

How is it that when we see ryse initial gameplay reveal and we see the combat we can make a rational critique of the game but cant do the same when i see the order with its 1-2 enemies on screen and narrow hallways?

from the video, when you consider what its doing, its really not that impressive.

1-2 enemies on screen, limited corridor areas, lowered viewing range (black bars) no coop, how exactly is it impressive?

Witcher 3 with its open worldness looks more impressive

Talk about divergence in perceptions...I am genuinly wondering if I had watched the same footage as you, because the gameplay video looks like CG to me...

Agreed I actually like how they took real world items from that era an made weapons that pretty damn creative.

Sony loves itself some linear, cutscene-filled "cinematic" games. For the love of all things holy, Santa Monica, please be making a wRPG.

It does have incredible graphics and art direction, though.

It's very pretty. Almost like a Blur or Digic trailer in terms of style.

The branching QTE's are interesting, but I hope they are used sparingly. I don't want to keep wrestling unnamed cannon fodder in a drawn out QTE sequence. Press A for awesome works great for Kratos; not so much for average dudes.

For a gameplay reveal, they should've shown at least one interesting enemy encounter from start to finish. It's a TPS, so maybe demo what it excels at? Uncharted or Gears sequels can get away with just showcasing cutscenes and set pieces because everyone knows how it will play. To prove that TLoU wasn't just Uncharted with zombies, the E3 2012 gameplay reveal demoed stealth, gunplay, AI behaviour, resource and health management, etc.

Looking forward to what they show next.

Graphically, it's the most impressive gameplay bit I've ever seen.

But hey, it's GAF, every exclusive thread is another carnival of stupid. Business as usual.

Graphically, this is the most impressive gameplay you've seen? What made it so impressive? Ready at Dawn picked some very boring footage to show. The gameplay looks standard fare for a third person shooter. Graphics look nice, but very static and levels look linear.

So your talking about scale, not graphics ......... because in terms of lighting, textures, geometry and post processing you would have an impossible time showing me anything better on console.

Witcher might have bigger scale, but in terms of everything else (graphics) The Order will surpass it.

This looks promising. Branched QTE--now that's a relatively fresh idea on it. Curious to see if these will have any impact beyond trophies or 'giggles' though.

It's definitely one of the most impressive showcases of realtime rendering I've ever seen.

This looks like something that would previously have been used as a pre-rendered video intro to a game.

Fucking pre-ordered.

I also have never had a problem with QTE in games, love em lol always found them fun...

Why plea for tit-for-tat? If you are arguing for suspending judgement, then do so, there is nothing wrong with wait and see. If you are arguing that because one came gets strongly critiqued then another should get equal treatment, well that also has some problems. I think this reveal should be looked at with a fairly critical eye.

On a personal level, I thought the Ryse reveal was much more troubling than this. Here we have 20 seconds of gameplay with one QTE. There we had like 5 minutes of gameplay with about 30 QTEs...

Another one who mixes two arguments to argue an impossible point.

"Graphically, this is the most impressive gameplay you've seen?" .............. Is English your first language, because that sentence makes absolutely no sense.

The lighting, cloth physics, materials, animations, everything. It looks CG but it's gameplay.

No game looks better than that in gameplay. Now I'm talking about graphics. The gameplay itself, we don't know yet, we have to wait for more.

Initial gameplay reveal for Ryse at E3 was fairly extensive being several minutes long.

Wow, that video was edited terribly. Was hard to tell what was actual game-jank vs. editing/sound issue jank.

Those environments. Sweet. Mother of fuck. As an environment artist, those make me fucking weap. How the hell?!

That MSAA works wonders!

Could it be that we're going "back" to forward rendering? That would imply simpler lighting (or less light sources...) in many situations, no?

Well, this entirely killed my excitement for this game. Saw some interviews as well. Same "cinematic gameplay" that we're used to. And by cinematic I mean QTE's and extensive cutscenes with occasional cover shooting.

We saw way more than 10-20 seconds of gameplay on Ryse, and it was unedited gameplay, and every single enemy had a QTE. Don't try to make the situations similar when they're not.

I'm no Chicken Little, but I'd be lying if I said my expectations aren't somewhat lessened after seeing that.

The IGN preview sounded pretty rough as well. Hopefully they pull everything together for release.
