The Order 1886 Gameplay Footage

What a pointless argument. I'm disappointed to discover that this game, with its cool setting and beautiful looking graphics is in fact a cover-based third person shooter that doesn't appear - based on this video - to do anything new. Start and finish. That's all I have to say.

Totally with you. The game looks amazing and I can't wait to see more of it before making assumptions about the gameplay variety.

We've all played enough of these third person cover-based shooters over the last seven years or so to know that what we're seeing here is what we're going to get. I don't see how even a stupendous array of weapons and contraptions could possibly mix-up the gameplay enough to "change up the gameplay sufficiently". It's more of the same. With a new hat.
We've known this for a year. Did you expect a penguin gods on magic carpets game after the last trailer?

Totally with you. The game looks amazing and I can't wait to see more of it before making assumptions about the gameplay variety.

Ho-ho! You all have too much faith in the games industry. How many times have we been burnt over the last generation? If they had more interesting gameplay, why wouldn't they show it off? This is the game. It's a third person shooter with walls to hide behind.

Honestly from what I've seen, the moral conflicts presented may be leading up to the Order pulling a JC Denton partway through the game. So you'll (speculation spoiler)
be fighting the lower class, but then something seriously fucked up is done by the upper class that forces you to defect and fight alongside the rebels.

What if King&Queen of England and the higher aristocrats turn out to be reptiloids and the Order strikes out to destroy them and free humanity. Of course that would mirror the actual history, the reptiloids would never allow this...

Totally with you. This looks crap. Pretty disappointed to discover that this is the best they could come up with. The setting really got me hyped, and it looks stunning visually, but the gameplay looks awful.

Though to be honest, even if it nails the gameplay a la Gears of War, I'm still disappointed it's another third person cover shooter with CQC QTEs. *sigh* Is that all they can come up with these days? It seems as though all of the effort went into coming up with a cool premise and setting, and then they decided to shoehorn it into a third person cover shooter.

edit: I don't want to seem totally down on this (or the industry at large) after one video, but aren't you guys sick of playing the same game over and over again? Sure, the scenery is different, but essentially you're hiding behind waist-level walls, peeking out, shooting, waiting for your health to regenerate, QTE fight, bit of cinematic action, move onto the next area full of waist-level walls. It's the same game again.

So you cant enjoy other games with same core concept gameplay in their DNA? Say you love Forza. So no game after that, sim wise, is worthy to be played? What if it has a better roster/more cars/more realistic cars/better environments? Would your problem be that its ANOTHER racing game?

For TPS games, core gameplay elements are shooting things, moving, moving and shooting with some cover mechanic. Add rechargeable health or need health packs. So any future game with these mechanics is not worthy or being played or seem boring to you? Even with better graphics, interesting plot, good character design, decent written script etc etc.

I would love to find out what your next set of games you look forward to because I can tell whatever they are, we gamers have played similar games fuck ton of times. I dont buy this "oh noes we playing same shit with different skin" because that applies to every game. Whats next? Oh you have to press buttons to play the game? Oh the humanity!

and you are basing that off of 20 secs of gameplay but oh since you've played so many games you only need to see 20 secs of a game to call its game play generic and write it off.

please tickle us more.

Destruction and creative weapons will absolutely change up the base gameplay. The gun used in this demo is probably not even a common weapon. I think a combination shotgun/assault rifle is the primary weapon.
Im very curious how the destruction ties into gameplay. We saw a train in the E3 demo, I wonder if its as crazy as you could destroy the tracks and derail a train taking out enemies or anything in its path. Or I am dreaming out loud.

Yeah mean, getting sick of all these 3 min "cinematic experiences". This industry breh, they treat us like we a joke cuz

There seems to be a lot of things you don't see about this game.

Like i said. Ryse for PS4.

Bullshit QTE NextGen cinematic feel fest 60 metacritic score average. Call it!

Can't wait that The Witcher 3 comes out to feel real NextGen experience.

End of the day, whether you agree with me or not, we've both seen the same amount of gameplay footage. We'll know more when we see more. At this moment in time, I am convinced that the game won't have much more to offer. I'll back out of this thread now because I've obviously upset the people who are excited about this game.

Knee jerk reactions calling the Order1886 a gears of war clone? from what.. a mere few second gameplay clip? Even the press and media know very little about the game!

Looks fine but impossible to take too much from that. You could take any game (good or bad) and chop up some bits of gameplay and it'd come across like this - it's simply too short and chopped up to give any impression of the broader game.

I can see though that The Order is for some reason going to attract the "where's the next gen gameplay" grumbling which I always find puzzling. Gameplay doesn't change much over time in most genres and it's the rare title or combination of title/hardware that truly offers a new experience and like most games The Order is going to be a (hopefully well done) amalgam of a number of common mechanics with ideally various tweaks or improvements from what we've seen before with hopefully some new stuff sprinkled around here and there - and in fact probably 95% or more of all titles released on Wii U, PS4 and XB1 will be just the same in terms of genuinely new ideas/features vs variations of proven mechanics.

Anyway somewhat underwhelmed by what's been revealed so far - in terms of it's all still a bit coy and I'd like to see a little bit more of the title and get a better and more focused idea of what it offers.

Love the setting and art style though - if ever there was a setting to justify narrow corridors and cover based shooting an alternative universe version of the warrens of Victorian London streets would be it - it's automatically more believable than say Mass Effect where every planet in the Universe you land on has oddly regular waist high walls scattered around to hide behind. I just hope the game offers variety between narrow warrens with some larger spaces.

When the game comes out, tell me I was wrong.

Im still waiting for the list of UNIQUE game experiences that you look forward to. Please post a list. Could be of 2013 titles as well. Let us see which games you look forward to play and let GAF decide if you are full of yourself. By your accounts, since video games became a thing, you havent played shit in decades because everything is the same.

Because you can see everything the game has to offer (overall and to the shooter genre) from a video that mostly shows traversal & cinematics and only small snippets of their way of doing QTEs and the main character shooting one or two people.

I'm pretty excited about the game and you haven't upset me in the slightest. In my case, I just don't understand what did you expect from this game or why do you insinuate that being a third person shooter ala Uncharted or Gears is a bad thing.

Graphics look great!

But "QTE" and "revolutionary" should never be put inside the same sentence.

It's hardly a QTE. Maybe it's the setting, but it feels more like playing out a Sherlock Holmes type analytical combat sequence. 'Where's the best area to target', 'Target ____', 'Countered, so I target ____'.

It isn't simply a "HEY, QUICK, PRESS __". So it is sort of revolutionary within the QTE combat concept. And, as I've said before, I'd prefer it over 'Tap Square until the enemy is dead' which most melee combat in a shooter devolves into. Heck, it's less of a QTE than most games.

You know, there's always room for improvement. You don't have to reinvent the wheel every time you wanna drive somewhere.

Maybe it's not the first time we've seen cover... but is it the first time you've seen cover used this well? That was a rhetorical question, the actual answer is irrelevant. My point is that, even if it's been done before, it can be done better. And that might be reason enough for doing it.
The last time the bar was moved somewhat for the action genre was in 2005. After that most games in this category got praised because of presentation aspects more than anything else, the Order seems to be serving the same cold ditch again.

Speaking for me, is about time to shake things up in a meaningful way.

what did you expect. just look at the reactions to tlou's reveal and you'll just have to live with the ridiculousness, irrationality and ignorance from some people. i am excited for this game but it's not like we saw anything at all. seriouslt , the gunplay lasted for 10 seconds.

We need a Neogaf branded version of this:

jump-to-conclusions-mat.jpg

Someone should photoshop that to have things like "bad art" "lol 30fps" "dudebro shooter", etc in the boxes.

While it's visually impressive, no, amazing, gameplay wise it just seems stale. It's a third-person shooter with over the shoulder perspective. Hopefully what we have seen is simply a sample of a game that has significantly more depth but as of now I'm somewhat letdown.

I'll give you a list when you back up this weird straw man argument with things that I have actually said.

Because you can see everything the game has to offer (overall and to the shooter genre) from a gameplay clip that mostly shows traversal & cinematics and only small snippets of their way of doing QTEs and the main character shooting one or two people.

They want people to be excited about the game, don't they? This is a trailer. A showcase of what the game has to offer. If they're hiding more interesting gameplay, WHY are they hiding it? It doesn't make any sense from a marketing perspective.

Point being, they're not hiding it. There isn't any more to show.

Eh, honestly having the bad guys turn out to be monstrous looking things feels a bit too... cliche? It'd be more interesting if the upper classes are basically human, but they just don't give a shit about anyone besides themselves. (Maybe they have a few guys with Blackwater to be an even match for the Order, but that'd be about it.)

It'd be also pretty interesting to have a majority of the half-breeds just trying to stay out of sight and live their lives, with the ones attacking people being outspoken fanatics. At the very least it would add even more moral difficulties that the Order would have to work to understand, but the chances of this kind of plot element being in there are slim to none.

So a 3rd person shooter?

I really don't get what you mean here.

Why must you tease us all of something great. Wish we'd have something like this, damn y ou.

Leave him alone. It wouldn't be a true GAF Sony exclusive game thread without a generous helping of the "it's more of the same crap" posts.

Yeah, I don't quite understand his point, so is a "Third Person Shoter" so what? lol is like he is expecting gameplay revolutions on every game announced, makes no sense.

We've seen the same minimal amount of gameplay, no one is saying this will 100% surely be GOTY, so you saying this is obviously just another run-of-the-mill shooter with nothing interesting to offer is kinda silly hyperbole as well. Difference is you are making hasty conclusions without giving any thought to the prior knowledge we have of the game. We KNOW that the game at least has POTENTIAL to offer a lot more than this first quick snippet of gameplay shows (environmental destruction on a level not seen before, quite a few weapon types with secondary modes, different enemy types from humans to monsters, gameplay outside of shoot shoot bang bang), so judging it to be yet another shitty third person shooter just because their initial quick in-game trailer/preview vids don't show something revoultionary is just jumping into conclusions way too fast, which is never wise. You literally see, what, 2 or 3 gun shots and just based on that you are already determined this is derivative shit. Doesn't that seem a bit ludicrous to you?
