Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

More of a run n' gun, but the western release for Gigantic Army is next week. Another solid Assault Suits clone.

Seems very cool. I LOVED Gunhound. Looks similar. I'd love for a PC release of Gunhound, official-like.

And weather has let up so I'm trekking to the post office tomorrow to grab my Karous. I've not been too eager to grab it (ha!).

GIGANTIC ARMY (proper case, lol) is really good. It's been available from dlsite for a while.

Still haven't played the harder difficulties, though.

bought a Battle Garegga original Japanese PCB. pretty stoked. gonna send it to hobbyroms per a recommendation to have the zakk roms burned so I don't have to keep manually resetting the rank.

should be ready in time for my astro city cab shipment :> I think I'll aim for it to be my first 1CC on my new cab.

I'm hurting though - pretty much out of cash with no groceries (lol) until March 1st. at least I have all my bills and rent paid ^_^
impulsive buying affects me all the time, but I really wanted a premium* game in the cab and something awesome to bring to the upcoming spring chicago shmupsmeet.

*I consider premium something along the lines of futari, ketsui, ddp, garegga, doj, etc..

Nice to see you guys caught up the impending release of GIGANTIC ARMY (and, yep, it's like that, in caps for the devs too!)

The official site is here: http://www.giganticarmy.com/

I'm not sure if Desura actually put up the game yet though but just saw Gamersgate and Rice Digital tweet about it.

Hope you guys like it and, yep, it's more of a run 'n' gun than a full fledged shmup although Insane mode (a mode Astro Port seems to be very fond of!) does have some hectic bullet patterns.

edit: if you guys wanna help, the game is also submitted to Steam Greenlight but I'm not sure if it's ok to post the link myself so perhaps someone else can kindly do it.

I signed into my Steam account for the first time in years (Mac user here) and voted. I'm buying direct from Nyu when I get home tonight. Can't wait for those extra difficulties.

I've had a BG board for a few years now, and totally forgot about the Zakk roms.

I'm not clear on what the Zakk roms do really? Does't the PCB reset rank after you power down?

You don't send your board to hobby roms, you order your zakk roms there and replace them yourself .
Without zakk roms you have to reset the board after every play because rank goes up every time you play a next game, with the Saturn port you have to enter the options screen after every play to reset rank .

thanks for the heads up. I actually figured that out after I posted, but either way it's useful information. I actually didn't know that about the saturn version... and I've read about a "wait" setting that emulates pcb slowdown (not so accurate) but I've never seen the option for it.

Been playing Gigantic Army the last couple of days now.
I can conform that it's very good.

Needs to be played on insane. ^_^

Not at all bad for $5.99

Does anyone here like Touhou?
I played a couple of 'em a few years back, and wasn't too into it. Are later entries pretty good, or are the fans just into it for the moe girls? Or, are they into it for the soundtrack? I've heard some pretty killer remixes.

It's a really fun little Assault Suits clone. I grabbed it and Kamui (incredible) from Nyu this week. I haven't had much time to play them though.

Also, Nyu announced that GIGANTIC ARMY made Steam. So congrats to them!

Does anyone have the rights to Gunhound in the west? Maybe we could beg Nyu to localize it.

Crimzon Clover is simply amazing. Definitely check out the demo. It's pretty meaty and should give you a good idea if you want to import the full game, think it runs about $40. You could also try out Kamui, Reflex and Diadra Empty. Those three are on gamersgate or desura. They are pretty cheap, about $6 a piece. All three are great shumps.

If you are just looking at steam I'd suggest Satazius, Jamestown, eXceed 3rd and Jets and Guns Gold.

arrived today :)

can't wait to get home.

I'm super happy :)

Runs well too. Couldnt recommend rancor on the shmup forums enough.

only got to s4 boss after a couple of tries. I've got my work cut out for me.

I really want a Progear pcb, so pricey though. I have never owned a PCB or cab but that's easily the first game I get when I have the money. I feel like a home port is never gonna happen at this point.

How much is it going for now? I haven't kept up with PCB prices since I sold all mine off a few years ago.

Around $500-$600 on ebay. Even though I'm not interested in a PS4 or Xbox One I'd rather buy a new system than drop that much on a shmup. I don't have any JAMMA setup either so I'd need so much other nonsense in order to play it and I'd probably be spending $800. I don't know how you all afford it but I respect it, shit is as hardcore as it gets.

Thats probably an arcadetower aka stv aka japandealer price with the obligatory mark up ^

Ironically (stv talk aside) it's easier justify when you take reselling into consideration, but it's still pricey. I also don't know if Ill personally get to the reselling point tho as I have a hard time letting go

Yeah look around for pricing, the Shmups forum has a thread specifically for asking for current going prices.

I'm the same way about not selling. Part of it is cause I'm pretty deliberate about what I buy in the first place, the other is that if I know I like something enough it could be somewhat hard to get again later.

I want Mushi but I have no clue if it'll have problems with the Astro PSU (I think mine is the ok one but not 100% on that) or if it might get bit by some weird color output issue on the board.
What's up with the conversion and phoenixed version?
I'm guessing a conversion is a ROM swap, like burn some chips for Progear and stick them on whatever other CPS2 board. Phoenix I think has modified ROMs to prevent (or come back from?) suicide. They're cheaper cause technically they're bootlegs, even if the latter might be on an otherwise legit board.

A Phoenixed version is an original board with the suicide battery removed and the encrypted roms changed , it's worth about as much as an untouched original and some even prefer the Phoenixed version.
A conversion is an original board converted to another game with most roms changed/re-burned and is easy to spot once you open the board shell and have a look inside .
A Progear conversion is worth about a third of an original one so always ask the seller for pictures of the inside before handing over the money .

Space Manbow is up on Wii U Virtual Console next week in Japan. Nice week with Radiligy for 3DS as well.

Also, Bullet Soul Infinite Burst 360 has dates and preorders up at the usual places (SE and LE), April 24th.

Interesting news about Infinite Burst. I'd like to check it out, but I replayed the original Bullet Soul demo last night, and man is that game boring. I wonder if they'll remix/rebalance the gameplay.

So I trudged through the heavy snow to make it to the Tokyo JAEPO show today. As you might expect, the amount of participants was comparatively low due to the extreme weather, but there was still actually quite a few people there.

To sum up this year's show in one phrase: if you like fighting and music games, arcades in 2014 are going to be a lot of fun for you. However for shooters, puzzle games and other 1P games, there was literally nothing on hand. Whereas 2013 JAEPO had Crimzon Clover and Ikaruga for NESiCA Live, as well as more minor puzzle games such as Do Not Fall etc., and even the 2012 AM Show had Dodonpachi Saidaioujou and Under Defeat for All. net Plus Multi, there were literally no shooters exhibited this year. None were even so much as hinted at for 2014 arcade release.

Here's the 2014 NESiCA release schedule:

imC1AKwl.jpg

There's three 1P games here: Elevator Action by Taito, Rastansaga whatever that is, and M2's Spelunker. Fine and dandy, but again no shooters.

I probably don't have to remind you, but shooters literally built the arcade industry. They were the explosion that created arcades all over the world way before the advent of 2P fighters. For the main Japanese annual arcade show (the only one, since AM show and AOU merged) to not have a single shooter and what's worse, for none to be hinted for arcade release in 2014, is not only a very bad sign, it might be the first time in arcade show history that there hasn't been a new shooter on exhibition at a major arcade show. This is despite the warm reception of Crimzon Clover, and to a lesser extent, Ikaruga on NESiCA last year which briefly brought back a little bit of hope.

That of course does not necessarily mean that we won't see a single shooter this year, one could be announced later on. However, JAEPO has really key timing in February where all the new games/cabinets come out and arcade operators can order them to have them in time for summer, the most active season for arcades. Shooters have over the past three years been subsumed into NESiCA/All.net cabinets instead of old Blast/Astro City cabs where they had independent PCBs. What's most worrisome here is that the 1P cabinets used by arcades like HEY etc. in Akihabara were already a rarity, and if there are no major shooter releases in 2014, they will probably be removed, ignored or not have a way to expand in most arcades. In other words, NESiCA and All.net will become almost exclusively 2P (fighting game) platforms. And that will leave shooters with essentially no home in arcades.

I think the larger reason behind no shooters showing up at JAEPO is probably low income on NESiCA cabs which are largely dominated by Blazblue, and soon to be dominated by Ultra Street Fighter IV. Developers get royalties per coin in the arcade and without enough activity on their game, they don't make any money. So most devs probably noticed the heavy fighting game rotation and judged that they couldn't make a profit on NESiCA/All.net. And that's probably the main reason why there's nothing scheduled for 2014, devs just aren't optimistic on the platform.

Space Manbow looks interesting. Wonder why it wasn't ported to more systems back then.

All I know about Space Manbow is it had an EXCELLENT soundtrack.Very VERY reminescent to me of stuff like Phantasy Star and Sonic. Just cut to the 2nd and third tracks to get a feel of it. The games that this shmups composers also did OST for is pretty amazing. Turtles 2, Symphony of the Night, Chrono Trigger, Goemon...it just goes on and on.

Tsuyoshi Sekito and Michiru Yamane are amazing and this is worth a nab on virtual console just for the music if nothing else. Fun fact...its first stage is a minigame on a Goemon title on the DS and the fish in it inspired the creation of two characters in Parodius (Mambo and Samba).

Have a listen

maybe I don't understand NESiCA enough yet or the situation, but I can't decide if this is a good thing or not. I imagine it's a pretty bad sign in that the genre isn't receiving much support (slow death), but on the other hand could that mean since NESiCA isn't supporting shmups that we might still see actual arcade pcbs which is what I'd prefer anyway? I just hope it doesn't lead to the end of shooters in arcades as a whole.

Regardless of the impact on arcades, Nesica is the death of arcade game ownership going foward. As a collector and preservationist this makes me very sad, even Type-X was better (when it worked).

Yeah...it saved arcades, but the cost is collectors and hoarders will no longer be able to find cabs of things they played as its the netflix of arcade technology.

My Kickstarted copy of Redux: Dark Matters LE came in and I have a question.

Is it supposed to look so low res? The DUX 1.5 which was included is nice and sharp, while Redux literally looks like it's running at half the resolution.

In other news, R-Type is coming to 3DS
in Japan
!
