Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I finally got around to trying the Kamui (Siter Skain) demo from Nyu Media with Wine in OSX. It runs great, but the game isn't accepting any keyboard inputs other than fn + F keys. Scratching my head over this one... Has anyone else gotten it working?

Guys, I'm getting ready to release a small, indie SHMUP with my friends.

We're on Greenlight as of yesterday. It would be awesome if you guys could check out the demo and let me know what you think, maybe toss us a 'yes' on Steam if you could.

The game is called Shutshimi. Here's a screenshot and a link to the Youtube trailer.

The demo is on the game's website. It'll be on Windows and XBLIG later this month. It'll be a dollar.

lol are those surfing butts? Gives me a choaniki vibe.

Not in OSX. I've only done Win8/joystick (PS360+ board) and it works fine w/o configuring anything (unlike say Crimzon Clover, which needs JoytoKey set up).

Yeah, they're definitely surfing butts. They were once a regular enemy, but we made them a situational enemy instead. Makes them more special... somehow.

We went for that Parodius vibe, but butts definitely feels like a Choaniki-style enemy haha There's not a lot of serious moments in our game, that's for sure.

how do ya'll find DoDonPachi on Saturn? worth $50?

okay, i misspoke! dude's offering DonPachi, which chaca & others said was a better game by them, and im down for that but i think the price is high...gonna offer $80 for that + akumajo x and see what happens. those of you who like Don grater than DoDon, why so?

Hey guys, I got a Wii U and after the transfer from my Wii I find out my eshop points can't be transferred over. So, I have 800 points to use.

I figure it's best to buy the rarest shmup that I don't have a console for. I don't have a Saturn, TG-16, or NeoGeo (But I have a PC and companies like IREM have been porting lately). What do you suggest?

Or, if there's any other virtual console game that you can only get by buying it through the Wii that's not a shmup, I'm all ears. I was thinking Ghosts n Goblins Arcade.

Edit: I have Gate of Thunder.

I'm a Castlevania fan and what I've played of it felt incredibly lifeless and boring. Do the later stages pick things up?

Contra Rebirth on the other hand was interesting from the get go.

I felt like Contra Rebirth was really, really easy. Good, but easy.

Castlevania feels like a classic game in almost every sense. The levels get harder in pairs. 1 & 2 were easy, 3 & 4 were a step in the harder direction, and 5 & 6 made me wanna pull my hair out. It was old school at its finest.

I need some help from you kind folks. I've been on a shmup kick since Gradius came out on the Wii-U. Also, I really like the Star Soldier series and I want a new game from the franchise but I'm not sure which one. I've got 800 Wii Points saved from ages ago and my choices are Blazing Lazers, Super Star Soldier, or Final Soldier (already got the others in the series besides the PS2/GCN games). I was leaning towards SSS but after reading about it on HG101 I'm worried it's too tough.

Super Star Soldier is by far my favorite out of those three. I haven't beaten it though, which might just justify your concern.

It's been a while since I've played them, so I honestly can't remember. That may have been an option, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't playing it that way. I'll have to check later.

However, if you're looking for the timed score attack modes specifically, you might want to give Star Soldier R a shot. That's Wii exclusive and is nothing but those modes.

Just a gentle reminder, the 3DS retail Karous ships next week in japan!

I'm gonna reserve it tonight because I want the soundtrack, but not going to pick it up unless they put some gameplay videos out. The lack of info on this title reminds me a lot of how Kokuga was launched, and that doesn't inspire confidence...

I ended up getting Super Star Soldier but I'm not digging it too much, so far. It is very difficult and the whole re-spawning at the beginning of the level is hard to deal with. I'm going to keep trying on it but I may end up just regressing back to Soldier Blade, which I also have from a while ago.

Got it working! Fantastic game. And the addition of TATE in the English release. Oh man.

I will be buying the full game from Nyu as soon as I have Paypal monies to spare.

I also got the Gunhound demo working. Feels great. A smoother version of Leynos 2. I really wish Nyu or someone would pick up the PC version, translate it, and release it for the west.

I reserved mine late last year at AmiAmi...so they bumped it up to the preorder with the OST.

I'm buying it either way, if I play it or not. Looking at your info on shmups seems good enough for me. If I actually play it is another story.

In any case, if you get it then post some impressions here as I'm away for work and won't likely get to my PO Box till next monday to pick it up.

Kinda pricey list price. Even with discount the sucker will cost $70+ after shipping.

random question:

does anyone know if Namco Museum Essentials have screen rotation? (tate), i wanna play the original Xevious in my modern consoles (360/PS3 i mean), i tried the demo and it didn't allow me to tweak any of the settings.... and the 360 port had no such feature...

I don't think I know more than a couple of people who prefer Don over DoDon. I am one of them, but it's purely because the game has a fresh feel to it, it was after all the defining game for Cave, everything following was just an evolution. In every other respect DoDonPachi is superior.

I like Donpachi waaayyyy better than Dodonpachi.

My Karous 3DS shipped from AmiAmi. Exchange rate seems better and was only $62 with EMS. Hoping for something good!

Managed to pick up Karous 3D yesterday right before the store closed.

Impressions after 1 hour of play:

1. If you have no expectations for this release, you'll probably enjoy it.
2. Everything's mission-based, you get assigned goals of killing 50 enemies with your sword, shot etc. and once you finish that, the level ends. You gain experience, unlock new weapons, achievements etc. The amount of unlockables is actually pretty nuts.
3. The slowdown that was mentioned in Famitsu's review is definitely there, but I'm not sure how bad it's going to get. So far when there is a large-sized ship on screen and maybe 7 or 8 popcorn enemies, you'll get noticeable slowdown. It tends to work in your favor, but I can see this being a problem on later levels. Jury is still out on this.
4. The 2D UI is really well designed.
5. You have a "time line" at the bottom of the screen that constantly displays comments from in-game characters and also users who sent in comments to the klon twitter. Some funny stuff in here, but only if you read JP obviously.
6. Gameplay-wise, the enemies have no collision, so all you have to watch out for are bullets. This lets you zoom in, out and destroy. It actually feels more like an action game than a shooter in many ways.
7. No way that I have seen so far to view scores for each mission. That will make the scoring a little dull.

So far, not bad. After I spend some more time with it, I'll write some more.

Cool!

Sounds interesting enough. I really never have any expectations so I should be good.

How is the packaging (and bonus OST packaging). A classy affair or chintzy?

Thanks for the impressions.

Sounds like Milestone stepped up their game?

I've never played their other games, so it's hard to say. I will say that the slowdown is pretty noticeable, so like I mentioned above, this could affect missions later in the game if they have a lot of enemies all coming out at once. I'm going to have to get pretty deep in it before I can render a verdict.

I'm helping out from the JP side again this year and it's gonna be hype. If you're interested in who's showing up, tune in! My friend Prometheus from France will be making the announcement.

And it'll forever live in the shadows of its predecessors and successor.

Which reminds me, I really oughtta pick up Raiden Project.

What's the overall impression of Raiden Legacy? I got the Irem Arcade classics from the Groupees bundle which is ending today, might want to get RL too if it's good.

It fucking sucks. Stick to Fighters Aces and Project.

Someone help me with Groupees and their bundles. Can I just pay $.75 and get games? Is there a catch? Never done anything like this before but I want Raiden and the Irem pack.

EDIT:I kinda understand now. I have those two selected and it gives me a price of $1.50.

Crossposting from the iOS thread that
GDC'13 "Best in Play" Award winner shmup 'Space Qube' is FREE on the AppStore, down from €2,69
Dunno if the game became freemium or if it has always been like that, since it appears that there's IAPs to buy continues and stuff with in-game currency, but I'm never gonna use 'em anyway so...

The voxely Minecraft-style graphics are pretty neat in a shmup, but I feel they could've done MUCH more with that style choice.

reminds me a lot of 3D Dot Game Heroes.

there was an interview posted up on Siliconera today regarding Ikaruga on Steam, and Treasure will be working on a new side scrolling action game for PC which is pretty exciting. I honestly hope it's a sequel or spiritual successor to Alien Soldier or Guardian Heroes (moreso Alien soldier). :D
