Bloomberg Tech Reporter: Facebook to buy WhatsApp

I'm telling you it's magic, pictures download/upload nearly instantly unlike sms bullshit.

Whoever doesn't use it on gaf should download it and pm eachother their phone numbers and mess around for a few minutes lol. Test it out.

I used to use Whatsapp for communicating with girls and internet dates, hook ups etc.

Bad thing about Whatsapp is that it strips the EXIF data from pics and videos.

iMessage keeps all the EXIF data in.

I need the EXIF data so I can see where and when the pics were taken that the girls would send me. Ya dig??

Damn. I knew of WhatsApp's existence and knew it was fairly popular, but I had no idea so many people used it.

I don't personally know a single person that does.

The number of americans in whatsapp threads going "bu-bu-bu-imessage-hangouts" is always funny to read. 400 million accounts is one hell of a selling point, and the simple method of your phone number being your username is why this exists, along with apps for low end phones.

I only use the service to keep in touch with relatives so its slightly disappointing to know it'll head down the road towards shit. I would imagine the employees are going to party the fuck out this week.

Whatsapp on Windows Phone looks sexy as fuck by the way:

fa0dfff7-e607-471d-9343-50164d2c5c81

I wish iOS 7 looked like this. Apple went for the ugly kind of flat

I wonder if this will pay off for FB. People who want nothing to do with Facebook will just switch to another service(lots of choices).

If they think they can buy most popular services until we have no choice but to link with FB and have our personal info data mined and sold to advertisers for $ then I certainly hope they are wrong.

Keep in mind that a few days ago Viber was bought for $3 per user... FB just paid $50 per user for Whatsapp.

Valuation of tech companies going full retard.

Google should have released hangouts with sms support way earlier, does it still have 2 threads for each contact? That's why I stopped using it

Personally, I'm optimistic. It's crazy that I have six different messaging apps to talk to people all over the world. At the very least, I will now need one less messaging app on my phone. Would have made more sense to me, though, if they brought out LINE or WeChat so they could lock up a good chunk of Asia.

Facebook and Whatsapp will remain seperate. No ads on whatsapp either.

WhatsApp will remain autonomous and operate independently. You can continue to enjoy the service for a nominal fee. You can continue to use WhatsApp no matter where in the world you are, or what smartphone you’re using. And you can still count on absolutely no ads interrupting your communication. There would have been no partnership between our two companies if we had to compromise on the core principles that will always define our company, our vision and our product.

Let's see how long this lasts.

I can't see how whatsapp makes any money right now. No one I know has had to pay for the app. I don't even remember how I got the app free and my license says lifetime forever.

On iPhone you just pay for the app and the license lasts forever.

On Android the app is free and after 12 months you have to pay an annual fee. I didn't pay and the app just automatically renewed my license anyway.

It will take them centuries to recoup the $19 billion so something's gotta give.

Oh you know come to think of it I may have got what's app during a time when it was free on the app store for a bit years ago. I'm on android now and the license is connected to your phone number so it is still free for me despite changing OS'.

Yah 19 billion is a lot of money to recoup and at the current business model will be impossible. Something will change.

My woman just told me...dammit facebook. I only got to enjoy this for a year before you bought and scooped out its soul like you're going to do.

Yep, one of the trick of getting a lifetime license for Android users is to put the sim card in an iPhone and then switch back to Android. Don't know the exact steps but iPhone -> Android migration will definitely keep it license free.

I think Whatsapp prioritized expanding its user base over making money so it made sense. If you don't pay they'll just extend your license anyway to keep you using. If they are going to stick to the no ad strategy from now on then they'll definitely be data mining the fuck out of our messages

They don't care about recouping it since that will be impossible. They are paying for your data and to remove a competitor from the industry. Facebook tried to buy Snapchat and bought Instagram for the same reason, they see these apps as a problem since they will fragment the market and steal their pre-teen/teen market.

Yup, Facebook just wants our conversation data and our communicative relationships.
Shit is getting creepy as helll.

Agreed except that Whatsapp is not just about the teen market. For a big chunk of smartphone users outside the US, Whatsapp is the primary means for communication. People don't use SMS or voice any more. Facebook will get a lot more out of these users than they will ever get from their Facebook accounts.

Facebook's margins are healthy too. I don't understand how their advertising makes them so much money.

I wonder how long this kind of apps will survive? I mean tele operators must have something in their pockets to combat these apps, they are losing that sweet SMS money. Data caps are already in place but I doubt they help much with apps such as Whatsapp.

I'm pretty sure one of whatsapp's core principles (which is tied to no ads) is that they don't about care our data and will never mine it for profit. It used to be displayed prominently on their website, but I can't seem to find anymore... figures.

Holy shit that's a lot of money.
Hope they don't fuck it up. Its by far my most used app, fucking love it. Like many said, it's the main reason here people even get a smartphone. I showed it to my mum and she was instantly hooked,

already posted?

This is why people from the US have a hard time understanding why WhatsApp is such a big deal.

I could not live without it like seriously.

Its my nr 1 way to keep in touch with EVERYONE I know, I only have 1 more friend who has a flip phone and does not have WhatsApp and EVERYONE ELSE in my life usses it to the their primary communication.

Like everything! Not just funny pics and lol stories but everything and everyone about their lives.

I understand why but I hate WA for doing the deal I hate facebook and I hate what they will do with all my data, from those conversations.

Reading through this thread give me lots of questions

- why someone want to stop using this app only because it is bought by Facebook?
- how could someone using smartphone and not knowing this app or even aware of any kind of chat app at all? Are they living in thecave or something?
- is it cool to not using the thing most of people use? Are most of the people become not cool? Or even worse when they keep using it when it is bought by facebook?
- how old r u people?

And most importantly, why do you feel the need to ask the same condescending rethorical question 4 times?

Fuck... I don't use/have Facebook and I don't intend to so I hope they don't shove it down our throats because WhatsApp is something I sadly could not live without anymore and the alternatives are pretty barebones imo.

Also holy shit at the people not knowing about WhatsApp, I'm shocked I say, shocked. I guess it's something for yurop peasants. It's immense over here.

Well they've owned Instagram for a while now and haven't really shoved Facebook integration there so far.
