Not sure if it's Namco more than Sakurai, but I'm very happy with the balancing I've seen so far. Many of the weaker characters are now a little stronger. No doubt they will nerf Meta Knight, although I wonder how they'll do it.

Despite DK being my super vanilla main, his model is just as off as Diddy's. Actually it's not really the model themselves just the textures for the fur really rub me the wrong way. That and the portions of skin that show on both of them just don't look right to me. I really can't pin point it.
What ever the case Donkey is my main and if I wasn't put off by all of Diddy's gadgets I would play as him too. Hopefully Dixie has minimal use of gadgets and goes all out with fists, feet and hair!

Smash has always gone for a more realistic look for nintendo characters, even melee for its time had very realistic textures, I remember being impressed by the scales on bowser's skin in melee which have not aged well at all btw.

Smash has always( melee forward ) had odd amounts of detail, I am pretty sure mario's pants are still denim.

They're dropping subspace emissary. We don't know what single player options there are, or the details of how character movement feels. It's too early to write it off.

I think he just went with Diddy on the US release since Tropical Freeze's JP release was pre-empted by Little Mac, although we don't know how long ahead of time Sakurai knew that'd be the case...
So I don't think we'll have this happen again for Yoshi, or any NA release, unless another JP release is pre-empted for a newcomer.

I'm counting on every single one of those guys 100% aside from Snake. I just don't know the relationship between Sakurai and Kojima or their respective companies well enough to give a solid answer either way.
It's funny how with each reveal the "expected list of cuts" just gets smaller and smaller.
Right now it's Lucas, Wolf, Snake, Ike, Pokemon Trainer. Before, during and after E3 until Olimar was revealed it was Lucas, Wolf, Snake, Ike, Pokemon Trainer, Ice Climbers, Lucario, Toon Link. Hahaha. Lucario and Toon Link have been the sweetest mini victories for me.
