The Order 1886 Gameplay Footage

And people thought I was going to be the negative Nancy ;). I might sound crazy but with a setting like this I'd welcome dlc story addons.

You got an Xbox and end up playing only two games on it? wow.

No, I played KOTOR 2, Ninja Gaiden Black, Jade Empire, and the 2 Halos. I didn't really care much for them (KOTOR 2 was ok, but not as good as the first). For me, there just wasn't as much I wanted to play on the Xbox as there was on the PlayStation 2, where I got most of my games. It didn't help that shortly after I got my Xbox, Microsoft jumped ship and moved all their franchises to the Xbox 360, so I felt a little burned, but I got over it. I just make sure that a console has more titles coming it's way that I'm a fan of.

I too think some story addons would be great. I'm really hoping that they'll have some kind of playable flashback of past conflicts The Order has been a part of. Given the age of The Order I'd like to see a medieval setting with crossbows and swords. I don't know how well that'd work given that it's a third person shooter but I'd still like to see what they'd do with that setting in The Order universe.

Someone should cut together a gameplay trailer of Uncharted 2 to make it look like this, because I'm pretty sure there are comparable scenes. You can make fucking amazing games look bland if you only show a few scenes from it, and it's pretty obvious that they showed scenes from a less tense part of the game. I'm not saying the Order actually will end up being great, but I feel like people should wait to see more before writing it off entirely.

Definitely, but the bizarre thing is that they purposefully built a gameplay video out of those boring areas and showed it off as the first introduction to the gameplay. I'm still really excited for the game personally, but that was a horrible gameplay reveal.

I agree that sure, no one should write the game off, but you can't be satisfied to be waiting longer for more substantial gameplay to be shown. The disappointment is that they didn't show much at all. I bet if you asked the devs if that reveal was representative of the order experience, they would say no. It's stupid that they barely showed anything. Now that is a let down.

When The Order was first revealed as a "CG trailer" at E3 (or whatever) people did not believe the claims it was realtime.

This thing they just showed us... basically was them saying, "Surprise, told ya so!".

To that end it succeeded. Now the dialog has shifted from whether it's a game to whether it's a good game.

Fine by me, as the latter is more interesting anyway.

I think it looks great. Sony needed a gears of war type game IMO and this looks to fill that void. Will make it easier for me to skip the X1. :-)

When it comes to games looking really bland and boring during gameplay videos, for me, the biggest one was Demon's Souls.

I remember seeing the gameplay trailer, which had much more gameplay than the two minutes on play here, and I thought the game just looked so fucking boring. I was perplexed why it was reviewing so well, and why it was getting so much praise from gamers (the game was already out in Japan).

I liked the atmosphere, but that was it, as the gameplay didn't grab me. It was slow and uninteresting.

Fastforward a few weeks, and I saw the Chinese import version at my then local gaming store for about $46, and I was like, "Fuck it, I'll get it. It's only $46." I took the chance, because I did really like the atmosphere of what I saw, and the fabled difficulty had me intrigued. Played it, and fucking fell in love with it. Demon's and Dark Souls are two of my favorite games of last generation. Everything that I thought made the game look boring just fell into place when I was actually in control. The tension, the atmosphere, the skill and strategy of fighting enemies and navigating the dangerous environments/taking advantage of positioning, etc.

From that point on, I stopped judging games based off of a few video clips (I even watched someone play Demon's Souls on a livestream and it did nothing for me).

Yeah I agree it was a disappointing gameplay reveal, especially since it was hyped to hell and back. My comment was more for the people that aren't excited about the game anymore soley because of the reveal. I do wonder why they only chose to show that much though, is the game not very far along? Either way I'm sure they will show off more of the game at E3 and that will either reinforce or hopefully disspell people's worries.

Good post. Learn from this guy.

Yeah, I completely misread the game based off of those videos. Video games are interactive media. The enjoyment we get out of it is mostly by interacting with it. Watching a video is definitely fun, especially when it's an anticipated game, but it pales in comparison to actually sitting down and playing the game yourself, and experiencing the world/controls/design first hand.

Ever since Demon's Souls, I just can't write off games based on videos.

I'm glad I took the risk and bought it anyway.

Same happened to me. Both Demon's and Dark looked boring as hell and i thought people were overrating it based on what i saw, until i actually picked up Demon's Souls and had a blast.

So i won't judge this game, specially because we didn't even see a minute of gameplay yet.

Anyway the setting, the story and all look interesting, so i still want it, unless it really disappoints.

I really was not interested in this game until i saw the gameplay. Now its day 1 for me. For me it looked like fun. Dunno wat all the people complaining about. :/

Same here, well I was hyped before but that hasn't changed. The world looks awesome, and so do the characters. I'm surprised by all the hate. I expected a 3rd person shooter, and thats what it looks like to me so far....hoping for an amazing OST.

Is this even an AAA game?

I just can't help but feel that with this they didn't put their strongest foot forward at all. We didn't see any sci-fi or supernatural weapons, we didn't see the monsters that are supposed to set this game apart. Why are they playing these elements so close to the vest? I don't understand. I guess what I was really hoping to see was:

- Guns outside of the normal, boring rifle, shotgun, pistol, machine gun setup. Things that looked inventive and Teslapunk, not stale and done a thousand times.

and

- Inventive enemies that set this game's tone apart from other games, in the same way that its setting helped to pique my interest in the first place.

I'm sure these elements are still in the game, I just wish that's what they had chosen to show in the first place. It also looked like there's a one or two weapon at a time limit, which I'll outright say I was hoping would not be the case. Now I have to wonder how much of this game is a chest-high wall shooting gallery and how much of it is the supernatural thriller shooter that I was hoping it would be. It looks great, and I like third person shooters, it's just not really showing anything that made me so excited in the first trailer we saw...

This is what Ready At Dawn has been cooking up? :-/

This reminded you of gears, so much so to skip X1? Please...

Did this with Hotline Miami...only it turned out to be worse than I thought wtf, which is why I am scared to play the dark souls games, they look boring and crappy. Dragons Dogma was really bad too...so I'm very careful not to spend too much money on these games, sometimes nothing at all, thank to Sony for PS plus; thank god...

I'm not surprised that they aren't showing much of the monsters yet, need to save some mystery with them, but not showing some of the crazier weapons and the destruction in action really takes away what is going to separate this game from other third person shooters.

Right, and this perturbs me as I was actually hoping (foolishly) that the Tesla invention weapons were going to be the norm, at least for the strapping dudes and dudettes in the titular Order. I pretty much enjoyed the Resistance games solely for the strange and delightfully fun weapons on offer. That's still not outside of the realm of possibility, but it seems somewhat less likely now, and that saddens me. Anyone who would prefer shooting monsters with a semi-automatic rifle as opposed to a gun that shoots lightning is someone I can't relate to.

I'm hoping E3 sheds more light on this, because in all fairness there wasn't much shown here and there certainly wasn't enough to judge the game as a whole. The game is still gorgeous, still retains its wonderful setting and so forth. Just makes a guy worry.

I'd love to see the environments. That amount of detail on characters really makes me think we'll see a very very linear game, and the fact that it takes place in ol' London seems to indicate alleyways and alleyways. We'll see soon enough I'm sure though, with E3 coming up! Looks great though.

Agreed I love me some awesome weapons

The Combo Gun

The bread and butter of The Order’s arsenal. The combo gun has two different functions. The rifle component of the gun is good for gunning down foes from a distance. The other barrel delivers a concussive blast that knocks foes back like a Force push. Stunned enemies can then be picked off with rifle fire.
The Arc Gun

This high-voltage weapon is where things start to get more experimental. The arc gun has electric wires and components spread along its long metal rods. Electrical current zaps along this contraption as it warms up, creating a Jacob’s Ladder. This piece of bleeding edge technology shakes and smokes as it charges up a precise, long-distance bolt of energy. The way it zaps towards far off targets reminds us of Cole’s eagle-eyed lightning blast from Infamous.
The Thermite Rifle

The thermite rifle is the flashiest and most devastating of the bunch Ready At Dawn has revealed so far. Pellets packed with strips of aluminum iron oxide are blasted into the environment, which then break open into a cloud of glittery metal paper. A high temperature flare is then shot into the cloud, creating a chemical reaction that turns the cloud into a burning mass of melting metal. This devastating weapon is perfect for punishing enemies hiding behind cover.
Fragmentation Grenades

Everybody knows how grenades work – pull the pin and throw it before it blows up. The Order’s grenades are a little different than average. These thrown explosives resemble the handled “potato masher” grenades usually used by German troops. It also features a small spike that allows it to be stuck into walls or the floor, creating a nasty proximity mine.

It seemed to me that that was very early in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if the gun he pulled from the box is the first advanced weapon you get. Their clearly going to stagger the enemies and weapons as the game progresses. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if that was the first mission in the game.

Yeah that is the way it seems,I think the Combo Gun is your first weapon though.

I don't get why a third-person shooter has to have boring-ass gameplay. RE4 had really interesting gameplay, particularly when it came to shooting different body parts of enemies. And it was cinematic, but in a very game-y way. The gameplay sections weren't overly choreographed, but the cutscenes were, as it should be.

This whole emphasis on making games feel like Hollywood blockbusters is really overkill, and I'm saying this as an MGS fan. At least MGS has actual in-depth gameplay when the cutscenes aren't playing. I liked the balance between cinema and gameplay during the PS2/GC era, and I hope we see a return to that balance.

No one ever said that so don't know where you got that from.

We seen very little gunplay for this game.

wow, incredible visuals, but the atmosphere and pace of game play seems mismatched. i would have expected a slower paced shooting experience instead of something with this much... bravado.

Found it noteworthy to mention that RaD just hired (January) a lighting artist from Quantic Dream who worked on The Dark Sorcerer demo and the unannounced PS4 project.

Even just the tiny snippet we saw showed such effects. When Galahad shoots the guy in the leg, he falls over. The next shot or two kills him, but with tougher enemies this sort of contextual damage could be used to slow them down and get breathing room.

This actually makes sense, and come to think of it I had a similar experience with Super Meat Boy. I'll try to keep this post in mind when I watch gameplay previews.

I'm still pretty concerned by The Order's apparent blandness though.

If that is what you are looking for then maybe this game is not for you. it's absurd for people to come into a thread about a game that the developers were clear would be a cinematic tps action game with a story and complain that it is exactly what the developers said it would be. If you want something else then go buy something else. Go play Thief which is coming soon or go back and play bulletstorm, which sucked ass btw. you want mech fights play Titanfall, which has been done before btw. But please stop shitting on threads if you haven't an interest on the type of game the thread is about.
I was kind of with you until your ridiculous, petulant final sentence. Threadshitting is disrupting a thread with a bad post that screams for attention. Like your attempt to call me out, for instance. Or for a more typical example, popping into a Halo thread to say "I see Microsoft is still milking this cow. This franchise has been dead for years but they still gotta piss on the grave." Basically a strong opinion, minimally supported, that contributes nothing.

What I did was state my opinion and explain it enough for other posters to see where I was coming from. That's called furthering the discussion. Threadshitting isn't posting a post of substance that one person just happens to take issue with.

I'm surprised you can say this with such little gameplay shown.

There's a right way and a wrong way of utilising the quick time event. Unfortunately, games like Just Cause 2 and Bayonetta's use of it far outweigh the likes of Heavy Rain and Shenmue. Here's hoping RaD implement QTEs in a way that's not mind-crushingly vapid. Based on what they've stated in interviews (and not so much what was shown in the footage) they're on the right track. Ru said they're open-ended, so that you don't immediately die or restart if you fail one, but rather you're put in a different scenario instead. That's good.

And what's the bet that at least a couple of the one's you buy will have at least a few QTE's...

Zero. I play primarily on pc and a little on Wii U. It's rare that the type of pc games I play have QTE's, and if they do, then I won't play them (such as Max Payne 3. First QTE I came across, I quit the game immediately). I have a few games on Wii U and none of them have any QTE's at all.

Why nope?

Because I've hated them since I first came across them in Shenmue. Press X, now press Y, now press B, now press X... oh, you missed! Too bad, you can't proceed until you get the sequence right. Well, fuck that noise. They're the laziest implementation of "gaming" I've seen developers use. I kinda understand their purpose - to give the player a cinematic view of say, some great-looking moves in Shenmue, but I hate them. I hate having to deal with them, and games that won't let me go past a certain point because of them make my blood boil.
