Welcome to the anti-gay bill club, Georgia!

My religion states that it's a sin not to be a smoking hot 6 foot tall blonde with a great set of tits. I fully expect support to discriminate against any employee that isn't.

Out of curiousity, why is homosexuality the only thing "against the bible" that these folks are wanting to discriminate against?

Because they're just using the bible as an excuse. They'd openly discriminate against blacks, too, probably, if society would let them get away with it.

Because they do all of the other things that are condemned, so let's rally against the one thing they don't do (at least in public...) or approve of! Hooray!

I fucking LIVE here, this is bullshit!

Some of my relatives are gay.

Getting tired of this religious shit, and it seems Georgia has it pretty bad.

Even so...

I'd rather live here than Arizona.

Would legalizing gay marriage negate this?

I'm just wondering if both laws could apply simultaneously.

No, it would be skewed in such a way that everyone has the right to not perform a gay marriage ceremony. It would require the government to recognize it, though (although they'd probably find a way to get around that).

It wouldn't negate this bill, as businesses/employees could still totally discriminate against people based on their bigoted views.

I don't see the legalization of that happening in the near future though.

Even if you do believe it's a sin, why can't you interact with people in a professional manner?

Does any religion actually specify that?

Alabama and Mississippi are far worse. Texas in some areas too.

I can hear McCrory panting and rubbing his hands from here, Dax. He is salivating so much he's flooding SC. I expect him to follow suite soon in NC. You betta ruuuun!

It's the easiest. You could discriminate against people with short hair, no beards, different types of fabric, who eat shellfish, murderers, liars, rapists... But then, you'd shave off about 95% of your customers doing that.

This is going to get an unbelievable amount of backlash.
I'm frankly REALLY disappointed that this is even a thing here, but I'm not at all surprised.
This sort of underhanded legislation makes me sick to my stomach.
As an Atlantan and as a human being, this shit is unacceptable.

Who will be next? Come on Florida, I believe in you. For bonus points, make it a stand your ground issue.

Heterosexuals will be legally allowed to kill (suspected) homosexuals because they were afraid for their religious rights/freedoms. Seems legit. I expect it on the front page of CNN/Fox/NBC within a day or two.

Jesus was pretty clear about this issue when he said "love one another as I have loved you". For a bunch of people who claim to follow Christ, the US Christian right are pretty good at ignoring that one.

Please tell me this is the last gasp of a collection of backward thinking politicians.

In all honesty... it's incredibly likely.

People hate black people WAY more than gay people around here.

I mean, at least gay people are white.

(And yes, I'm full aware that there are gay African Americans, but baby steps people.)

What a stupid bill. It certainly won't help our image as being a backwards Southern state. God, we're even starting to become a 'Hollywood of the South' with all the filming going on in Atlanta. Fat chance that this'll help.

You know, I love living in Georgia, but the blind, conservative group-think makes me want to move inside the perimeter.

How is shit like this still an issue in 2014?

How fucking stupid to you have to be to think being gay is a sin.

Some active voters are stupid enough to think so, I guess.

I still don't understand why these states are passing bills to legalize things that are already perfectly legal.

GA resident here too.

I posted a link to the bill above. I don't understand legaleese very well, but can we use this bill to say not pay taxes and stuff like that if it's a sincerely held religious belief?

If this bullshit spreads to Texas, I'm moving somewhere else.

Wouldn't surprise me. I live in Texas as well, and I can tell homophobia is rampant here. I'm gay too, I'm pretty masculine, so its hard to tell, so I rarely have issues, but it still sucks. If I could move, I would, but its not that easy.

As a southerner my whole life, living in Georgia for the past 25 years, all I can do is facepalm. Facepalm all day every day.

it sucks, but then i realize living in metro atlanta pretty much means you are safe from tornados earthquakes ice storms (for the most part) floods and other natural nonsense... it can be worse.

Keep drifting further to the right repubs, PLEASE! In a perfect world, these shitbags would be locked out of the White house for decades to come.

It's under the guise of "protecting businesses rights" from lawsuits when they actively discriminate.

But on what basis could a gay person sue if they are currently discriminated against? It isn't illegal.

All this does is opens more doors for this to become a lawsuit that makes it to the Supreme Court. Republicans are accelerating the process to equality.

Maybe that's their secret plan, without having to openly support the gays they are in fact rushing in an era of equality. lol

I'm exaggerating a bit because I love living in the south and a lot of GAF may not understand that but I try to uphold what the south is supposed to be about (in my mind anyway) and that's southern hospitality, hot humid summers, scared shitless of snow and ice and delicious fattening food but we also have to take the bad with the good, and that's religious zealots and homophobia that mainly comes from the rural areas and unfortunately makes its way to bills like this.

But as others have said, Atlanta has one of the largest gay communities in the country, no way this passes but it definitely doesn't help the south and Georgia's image, that's for sure.

It's a last ditch effort to go against the gays. Also, I guess they want to avoid lawsuits or whatnot that happened when a florist/bakery chose not to serve some gay people. No idea. It's all stupid.

So glad the wife and I decided to cut Atlanta off the list of moving locations.

Atlanta and Georgia are two very different things though I will say the outskirts of metro Atlanta are very strange as new money, Mexicans, Koreans and Indians moving in along with the old guard of country folk and rednecks have made areas like Cumming very weird places.

Anthony Kennedy is probably the only thing keeping the Supreme Court from being laughably retrograde in regard to gay rights. I don't have any faith in Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, and especially Alito, who pretty much makes shit up.

Panda-ing

Please remove that gif. It infringes on my religious beliefs of being aroused by lesbian pandas.

But seriously, another native Georgian here. Well, native enough, as I've lived here most of my life. I honestly like the state - the weather is nice, the people are (at least outwardly) friendly, and we have a lot of diversity. It sucks when the ignorant vocal minority wants to silence that diversity though.

I work with and am friends with a lot of opened minded, good people. There are a lot of progressive Georgians, but you find them mostly in and around the perimeter.

How long do we have to wait until all the people, mostly old people, that have these retarded things going on in their heads are dead and we can prosper and move forward?

Is Georgia like a serious shithole or something? I feel like every day there's some backwards arse story coming out of that one state.

Don't judge GA based on some idiots in the house. I live here and I can promise you only the serious, in the middle of nowhere, rural areas are still anti-gay. The population of Atlanta alone will be enough to keep this from passing.
