Welcome to the anti-gay bill club, Georgia!

How long do we have to wait until all the people, mostly old people, that have these retarded things going on in their heads are dead and we can prosper and move forward?

Never, if the old and bigoted continue to pass their venomous beliefs onto the next generation.

So glad the wife and I decided to cut Atlanta off the list of moving locations.

Atlanta really isn't that bad man! I'm sure you had other reasons, but don't let stuff like this taint your view of the city. Great city for artists, engineers, and lots of other industries. It's actually a really gay friendly city too, and I doubt this bill will have any chance to pass.

I admit the pollen sucks.

I'm sorry if this has already been asked & answered in this or another thread already, but what why is this happening now? Every day there seems to be a new thread on gaf about something similar happening in a different state.

This, the people who support this "don't discriminate against my right to discriminate!" crap are not following the bible as they claim. There are several points in scripture where this type of behavior against "sinners" is frowned upon but they do not care. This bill was born out of pure 100% malice and is using the bible a pedestal to justify it.

Exactly this. Pretty ridiculous that this is happening at all. I expect a swift about face when people start protesting here in GA

What could basically be called the "Theocracy Now!" movement in America is really organized, with groups sharing (plotting) across the country. These bills seem to be the latest fad to create the image of a poor persecuted christian majority fighting back against godless devilsinners.

Even if none of the bills ultimately come to fruition it makes the backing politicians look great to the backwards people who would support this shit. But as we are seeing in Arizona, some politicians are getting nervous about what the -actual- majority may think of these political plays.

In short there may be a tipping point where public exhaustion with this shit reaches a level that some politicians finally realize they've been trying to extract support from a demographic with no future. Of course, some politicians may be backwards themselves and truly believe what they're spouting.

But on what basis could a gay person sue if they are currently discriminated against? It isn't illegal.

All this does is opens more doors for this to become a lawsuit that makes it to the Supreme Court. Republicans are accelerating the process to equality.

Perhaps my sexy gif was too obtuse, but they're just pandering to bigots in an attempt to shore up support for the GOP. In a country with non compulsory voting, you get people out to vote by appealing to their prejudices. The GOP is betting on the existence of a large enough pool of homophobic voters to ensure their continued existence in the face of a continued trend of declining popularity.

I guess we'll have to drag the Supreme Court into this again.

Good going, homophobes. Do us a favor and go back to your caves before this vile legislation infects any other states.

There are days where I really wonder if this is all some kind of misunderstanding. I wonder if the Bible that these people hold so dear was a leaflet that just read "NO HOMO" on both sides and they honestly think they're doing the Lord's work.

Georgia isn't really that bad like many others have said. Since the state is pretty much the gay Mecca of the South I seriously doubt this passes.

Didn't this happen pre-civil rights movement? All types of idiots were claiming it was against their religious beliefs to serve black Americans, etc., etc. The same things were said regarding interracial couples. And now gay people you say?

Hmm...I'm seeing a trend here. I think those southern states need to be continually monitored by the Federal government. Time to reinstate that Federal election law that was just struck down and extend it.

It kind of blows my mind - does the right-wing really want to see photos like this (only with gay people instead of African Americans) in an election year?

Because that's where this is going.

Preservation of Religious Freedom Act? Thank Allah, looks like my Muslim brothers and I shall find peace in Georgia.

In all seriousness, though, why don't we have designated states for each religion? Well, I mean, the ones that matter, of course. All those small-time religions are just going to have to deal with religious persecution, brother. They can't sell worth a dime.

Don't judge GA based on some idiots in the house. I live here and I can promise you only the serious, in the middle of nowhere, rural areas are still anti-gay. The population of Atlanta alone will be enough to keep this from passing.

That isn't how legislatures work. Usually the urban areas are gerrymanded into pies so they all dip into large amounts of the suburbs, which are usually more conservative.

Again . . . I welcome these bills. These bills expose much of the GOP for what many of them are . . . small-minded bigots. These bills may pass in some deep red states (and eventually get thrown out by the courts or repealed) but nationally, they paint the GOP has a regressive party building a bridge to the 19th century.

I don't understand how can this be legal.

It's unconstitutional, but Georgia's State Supreme Court is most likely packed with conservatives. If it get to the SCOTUS It'd be overturned (most likely 5-4, but still overturned). It'd take a long time to get through all the appeals too, and the special interests that foot these bills are simply trying to do damage to the LBGT community anyway they can; the amount of elapsed time that this would be legal would allow just that. Also when it gets repealed businesses who welcome to law will claim ignorance about the ruling and discriminate anyway.

On the one hand it's infuriatingly sad that these laws are proposed recently.

On the other hand, I can't help but giggle how this is obviously a desperate attempt by the bigots to win some battles in a losing war.

They do if the narrative is clear, but right now the Dems are hurting because of the botched healthcare roll out. The registered GOP > registered DEM and mid-terms are about base turn-out + getting those few non-base ppl to sway your direction, especially for the Dems. This + the Arizona story aren't getting the traction they deserve in the mainstream press.

What are the chances of someone with a Computer Science degree getting a visa and eventually citizenship in a country like like Canada? I'm not seriously considering it, but it has been on my mind since I got into a debate with a conservative co-worker. His main argument was "if you don't like America, then get out." Its a stupid argument to make, but it did get me thinking, would I be able to get out of the country, if I ever wanted to?

If you have needed skills and the requisite experience I imagine the process would be pretty painless. The cost of hiring you would be higher, but the Canadian government is pretty proactive about helping business bring in foreign labor when it's needed.

The Evangelical movement aligning itself within the Republican party is the worst thing to happen to this country in a long, long time. We need a lot more religious leaders like Pope Francis to speak out against the ignorant hypocrisy that has corrupted so many people the world over.

Freedom of religion already exists, right? Why isn't that enough?

Why does it have to be "freedom of religion at the expense of others' rights" as well?

It's really selfish behavior. To want it to become law is deplorable. You have your freedom and yet you're not satisfied unless you remove other peoples' freedoms? No compromise? You must come out on top?

Because herp derp respecting other peoples' rights is an infringement on personal religion.

Or something.

I can't always fully translate stupid to English.
