I do it sometimes to try and make the lag of input calm down and not destroy progress. Like the stairs earlier. The start helped stop it from being a constant cycle.

Well we're almost certainly killing the shiny Gyarados.

We could get a shiny from an egg though:

Odd Egg: From the Day-Care Man. Will hatch into a Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, or Magby that knows Dizzy Punch. It has a 14% chance of being Shiny in international versions.
