Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Lets play a game, there is only three slots left, Sakurai has given you the reins to which characters from this list get in, who three do you pick?

Ridely --> Yes
Palutena --> Yes
Shulk --> No, i love Xenoblade but he's not iconic nor import enough
Chrom --> see above
Mii --> I don't like him but Smash was always a collection of everything Nintendo and I can't deny how important the Mii was for modern Nintendo so Yes!
Pac-Man --> 3rd Party Trash
Mewtwo --> we already had him, i take new over old
Chibi-Robo --> See Shulk
Hades --> See Shulk
Wonder Red --> See Shulk
Dillion --> See Shulk
Slime --> See PacMan
Prof.Layton --> See PacMan
Waluigi --> Wasn't created by Nintendo, has no games and is only a spotfiller. Maybe next time

That's really easy.

So with DK & Bowser both being a lot more powerful in Sm4sh, does anyone else think that Ganondorf finally has a real chance of being revamped and made viable this time around?

Huh why wouldnt they tease anything from KI:U that week

Sakurai really hasn't been catering to some of his creations' anniversaries. He even shrugged off the anniversary of Smash 64, which I thought would've been a great day to show off something cool to celebrate the day the original came out and why most all of us are fans today. I'm not expecting anything significant, but it would be nice to be proven wrong.

Will be hard since Palutena's Temple already HAS been revealed :P

Oh I meant like a full reveal. He teased it like he did the Mario Galaxy stage last year.

Mr. Sakurai. Always the humble one. The most I would expect if anything is for him to actually show the entirety of the Wii U Kid Icarus stage but I doubt it.

Yoshi's always been good, we just haven't learned how to play him a la aMSa.

Ness on the other hand... His recovery is the thing that wrecks him and he's never been good. At least Lucas got a tether to mitigate his predictable and cancelable recovery.

I woudnt put kid icarus in the same category as the smash 64 thing...

I never use Yoshi because I accidentally roll out of the stage and commit suicide.

I personally hate his recovery, it's not bad, it's more I'm not a pure vertical recovery type of guy and I seem to always forget about his lack of a B+up recovery

Easy. I'll do a new franchise and two much deserved additions to already included franchises.

Chibi-Robo
Ridley
Palutena

I feel like Yoshi needs Super armor for some of his moves, since he doesn't have any good approach moves.

He doesn't need it, his eggs give him tons of damage and mix ups and his Down smash has high priority.

He can approach and mix up with his double jump cancels as his flutter jump gives super armor.

The only thing Yoshi really needs is more priority on some of his moves.

His egg roll doesn't matter because a good amount of the cast have useless or situational specials anyway.

You can give him a different side-b but it's not like a new one would significantly make him better.

If we're talking Brawl Yoshi, he's a 50/50 matchup against Meta Knight.

Really he's not a bad character like the rest of the cast if people actually sat down and learned him.

Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by "approach moves".

Np: it means he doesn't have any effective or safe way to close the gap between himself and an opponent. Much like Metaknight sort of, but MK has like a shit load of tools to make up for that and he is incredibly fast and has insane priority for all of his moves, etc.

Yoshi needs better aerials so he can close that gap without being punished for attempting it.

I trust that E3 list with my heart, so Pac-Man and Mii are already in.

My picks are:
Chibi-Robo
Chrom & Robin
Dillion

Out of curiosity, which characters have good approach moves competitively? I want to say Marth b/c of his speed+damage is greatest at the tip of his sword, but I'm not too well versed here

So, how would you guys react if Smash 4 had an "Edition Select" like what was just revealed for the new SFIV, i.e. you could choose 64 Mario, Melee Mario, Brawl Mario, and 4 Mario (graphically though they'd look the same basically, not actually the 64 model).

Obviously this is way too much work and won't happen, but hypothetically.

Ridely - I have a strong feeling he will be in the game and honestly would be a cool pick.
Palutena- same as above
Shulk- Naw don't see this one happening
Chrom- I say yes to this but sadly I see Mii's getting in.
Mii- statement above sadly.
Pac-Man- eww, such a bland character. Namco have much better choices.
Mewtwo- Most people crying for Mewtwo to return will play him for a week notice he is still ass (unless you put in work, most people don"t) and drop him, just like in melee.
Chibi-Robo- nope
Hades- nope
Wonder Red- slim chance but for now no.
Dillion- no
Slime- no
Prof.Layton- no
Waluigi- is on that spectator life.

Marth is a spacing character and he's one of the easier characters to learn to play.

There's no universal way to approach someone, you learn your matchups and you work from there.

You wouldn't approach a Jigglypuff the same way you'd approach a Bowser if you were playing Marth.

If you want to learn how to approach a character, figure out your best tools. For Marth it's his sweet spot and his spacing, for Falcon it's dash dancing and taking advantage of grabs and stomps.

You just need to get in there and pull the momentum onto your side. Instead of turtling, go up and rush your opponent down. Take advantage of your lasers and your turnips to get your opponent into stun and capitalize that by starting a combo.

Rolling, dodging towards them is a means of approaching.

Do what works best for you and the character you play against as there is no universal approach for any character.

you're crazy
that's a -2 matchup

Dude, approaching with aerials with MK is not his strongsuit, ask anybody. His aerials are very good but Brawls lack of momentum conservation and low air drift makes it difficult.

just because he's better at other things doesn't make his approaches bad

I stopped following Brawl after the first couple years and from when I remember, Yoshi was considered an even match up compared to the rest of the cast.

Now Pikachu would be considered 50/50 since the metagame has changed.

It'll never happen Victoria but imagine 64 Kirby vs Melee Fox vs Brawl Meta Knight vs SSB4 Marth.

Fucking insane.
