Twitch Plays Pokemon Thread 3: Return of Red... Aussies win again!

I still don't get Whitney's reputation, but that might be because I use Geodude all the time.

Me too, but I used to overlevel my starter so the entire game was a joke. Gen 2 is the worst when it comes to challenge, Lance strongest Dragonite is in the 40s at Elite 4 if I remember correctly.

I never had much of a good team by the time I got to Whitney, it was usually my starter as the strongest than a few week mons that I sometimes leveled as failsafes if my starter fainted. But Whitney...And rollout...Always a problem.

I just looked that up the other day. Seems weird to me, since "overused" would imply being used too much, and vice versa for "underused," but instead they're just tiers. Like, if the "overused" tier is legitimately better than the "underused" tier, the labels don't make any sense.

They are tiered according to how used they are, if a Pokémon has a usage of 3.42% in that tier over 3 months it will be placed in that tier, normally this is a pool of roughly 50-55 Pokémon. Generally the most used Pokémon are the ones that the community deem as better than the others in one way or another.

Lance has two Dragonites at Lv.48 and his strongest one is at Lv.50.

Stomp flinch and Milk Drink were always rough. But yea, if Miltank got Rollout and it built up for four turns..... ouch.

Oh

Which one's better? Haha

In competitive pokemon, pokemon are put in tiers based on the usage they get. OU is the default tier, which allows you to use all pokemon from the OU tier and below, and bans all pokemon from the 'Uber' tier (mostly legendaries, but there are exceptions). The UU tier allows you to use all pokemon from the UU tier and below, and bans all pokemon from the Uber and OU tiers, and so forth.

I guess the lower tiers are just for fun, and to use pokemon that are otherwise not really viable. There's no reason to use Charizard or Arcanine when you can use the much better Heatran, but Heatran is ugly as sin and the former two are radical so you'd want a tier where you can use them and not be massively outclassed.

The tiers are literally determined by how often the pokemon are used with the help of statistical analysis. The OU pokemon are the ones that were almost ubiquitous in team setups during the formative period, which can be due to actual power of convenience of setup.

The actual quality of the pokemon itself can vary wildly within a tier (Breloom, Tentacruel and Forretress are up there with Tyranitar and Starmie in OU) because oftentimes some pokemon are chosen frequently for a select niche that they excel at.

EDIT: Beaten like Togepi

Not all Pokemon in OU are better than those in UU, and those in UU aren't better than those in RU, etc. Since those in lower tiers get less use, some people actually don't know how to properly counter them and end up paying the price. The only "best" tier is Uber, really.

Charizard's currently topping usage charts.

Ahhh I see, thanks!

Is the joke dead yet?

Mega Venusaur is thankfully one of the best Mega Evos of the game.

Too bad it's also the ugliest.

Mega Venusaur is really good. I don't understand why many don't use it.
Anyways i heard that we lost to Morty again lol. Imagine if we started with Chikorita, this would have been hell.

Whats happening now?

Smogon's page says OU for both. I was basing it off that.

Prety sure its Borderline (banned from UU, not enough usage for OU), just like Jolteon

Jlteon holds the 2nd highest plae in consistency outside of Ubers, with a BL, OU, OU, OU, OU track record, although it was never really a domineering prescence

n terms of influence, Tyranitar has always had the largest consistent influence on the metagame

Lower tiers aren't just for fun, and various things, such as the tier leaders approaching each tier differently with varying philosophies and loer userbases can create very different atmospheres.

For example, last gen OU could sometimes be a mess, because of the weather wars. UU, RU, NU, and Ubers each are different in their own way, took a different philosphy to banning, the ideal metagame, etc.
