Twitch Plays Pokemon Thread 3: Return of Red... Aussies win again!

Final Fantasy 6 would be a good choice for one of these. People are familiar with it, and it has a mechanic where you respawn at the last save point with your exp from when you died, so porgress wouldn't be pushed to far back from a death. However, I have no idea how they would input Blitz commands, which might be an issue for Sabin's recruitment scene.

In FF games don't you usually go back to the title screen when you die? I think that could pose a problem.

I think it's also because there is a lack of mythology like the previous game had with Lord Helix / Bird Jesus / False Prophet Eevee etc. Just aren't seeing any of those amazing stories coming out here for some reason. But it's the absurd player made stories that added so much drama and entertainment to the stream. Now it's kind of like...just watching someone play Pokemon (badly)

Yeah that too. There's been a few okay things come from Crystal but so far nothing like what we had with Red. And again since the games are so similar, it's hard not to make comparisons and instantly see why the first stream was just better in what it accomplished. It really needs to be something else besides Pokemon to regain some of that fresh innovation.

Someone a while back suggested Dragon Quest and I think that would work fine, the biggest issue with DQ (at least assuming we don't pick up a ton of popularity in Japan) is that not enough people are familiar with where to go. But from a gameplay perspective it would work well.

Yeah DQ would work probably. It's been forever since I've played it though so I wouldn't remember a thing, although it's not too hard to just pull up a walkthrough and glance at what needs to be done next.

I also like the idea of an eroge VN, where the chat is always in Democracy.
That's...not out of left field at all. Haha. I would like to see a VN in democracy mode though, that would be pretty fun actually. Or at the very least a very slow anarchy so we can see what actions we make.
Although eroge VNs aren't a bad idea

These trolls pressing to release LazorGator are killing me. Want to level up the rest of the part? Fine, but do it like a sane person. Put the other pokemon in the lead position and have an ounce of commitment to leveling up the underleveled pokemon. That means grinding and being willing to go back to the pokecenter to heal when they faint, rather than marching on with just LazorGator alive.

To be fair, doing any of that requires way more discipline than the chat has. For the record I don't advocate releasing the Lazorgator.

Also, all this talk of leveling up other party members reminds me.....what about the two that we left at Daycare?

Same here. I'm about to go to bed, but they keep going back to the Pokemon Center and nearing the PC. They actually went to release and had the cursor over Feraligatr once earlier. It's really impeding progress. Besides, I'm pretty sure they could actually get some training done if they really wanted to, chat has worked together for more insane things before. It doesn't seem like the majority really wants to do any one thing, it's just groups of people that all have different ideas of how to continue.

Well Pidgey was level 18 and Hoothoot was level 13 when we dropped them off. Too lazy to do calculations, but Rick Gastly went from 23 to 50 by the end of Red, and that was days and days of walking. It hasn't been nearly that long here (only about a day maybe) and there's a lot of turning in addition to walking, plus all the wasted time from phone conversations (especially during democracy). So maybe by the end of the week it will be viable to go back and get them if we still haven't leveled or caught anybody decent, but right now at least it wouldn't be worth it. And definitely not worried about money because Feraligatr just won't let us black out.

They're still there. All the more reason that if we have to take LazorGator out of the party we should be going to the daycare.

The fact everyone's playing with the PC rather than trying to safely store LazorGator in the daycare shows that the trolls are at the wheel.

FF6 or Chrono Trigger would be my choices for the next Twitch Plays. Very different tonally from Pokemon, and more epic.

Or hell, let's even get into the PS1 era of turn-based RPGs. FF7 would be amazing.

Btw, this might get the streamer into hot water with Nintendo, but how feasible would Twitch Plays Pokemon X/Y be? Are the controls simple enough?

By the way, how difficult is it to get Exp All in GSC? Is it doable and fairly close by? Because that would be the real solution to the gator debate.

There is no Exp. All in GSC.

To get the Exp. Share, you need to trade a Red Scale to Mr. Pokemon. Boosts only the Pokemon it's attached to sadly.

No emulator for 3DS and it would require touch stuff I'm pretty sure. Don't think it'd really be possible anyway.

I've barely watched this since we started Crystal, the novelty has worn off.

Personally, I feel like Pokemon on Netflix within the hour of the original finishing was just the finisher to top of a event of the lifetime of the internet. The moment when TPP transcended the internet and brought back all that nostalgia and then you could relive it, by your self, at home, at your own pace. In concerns to mass appeal, yes, it's over. But it's by no means not interesting anymore. This train is gonna go until it can't go anymore. And it's gonna sustain a nice 15k+ userbase.

Actually, I blame everything on not getting FeMC.

To me the feeling that the novelty wore off has a lot to do with nostalgia, and nostalgia isn't really a factor for me when it comes to Gen 2.

Gen 3 on the other hand, that could be much better than this.

I think the real blame goes to the amount of time commitment necessary to follow the game. I think most of the artists from last time around just can't commit that kind of time on a regular basis.

Female main character would have made the fan art explode.
Which is why there's still hope for Gen 3.

I feel like Gen3 is the last game we are guaranteed to draw any sort of significant crowd. As far as I can tell, Gen4 is just... how about I say it nicely and go with "underrepresented"?

Maybe by then everyone who left won't be sick of it. And maybe the artist too. I sure as hell am not interested in any major capacity right now. I mean, I can't even nail down a theme for this playthrough right now. The whole religion thing of Gen1 got lots of people all riled up but I think we're lacking that this time around. Or a major differentiator, like a different protagonist.

And the fanbase. :P
Dude, this fanart is tasteful as *explicitive*.

Gen IV is too slow a game to keep anyone interested imo. If the streamer even decided to do it, given DS games can still be played on 3DS. I'd love Gen III simply because I enjoyed it more than Gen II, but I don't know how much mileage we'd get out of that either.

Gen 3 requires both continuous and simultaneous button presses in order to progress(trick and mach bike), so unless the streamer tweaks his script, it wont be possible to complete

I don't think we will get to gen 3 if this stream fails which sucks because with a truly fresh batch of pokemon , plus stuff like contests we could have a real blast.

It's weird because it feels like the first time that they're intentionally doing something to our clear disadvantage, just to "shake it up" and make it more interesting.

Don't know how I feel about that.

Neither are required to complete the game.
If you're thinking Sky Pillar, the mach bike is only needed AFTER Rayquaza put the bitches in their place.

I really want Twitch to attempt the Battle Frontier but I think most interest would be dead by that point.

Holy shit they stored Gator.
Damn. Though slightly worried, I am actually impressed.

I mean, he doesn't necessarily have to be released either. He's out of the way now. That's one thing I didn't like about PC usage over time; it went from 'get them out of the way' to 'KICK EM THE FUCK OUT AND BURN THE GODDAMN BRIDGE' way too quickly. I think the whole religious angle of the last playthrough really amplified that--it was bound to happen with trolls and whatnot, but it got to be a bit much. Now that things have calmed down a bit I look forward to seeing what we can do with the team from this point on, and hope we'll see a return of the Gatr, and maybe even the birds.

It's not even that. The novelty has worn off. It was cool the first time but now it's like we've already seen this before. Gen I was simpler too and it was easy to make memes.

Not sure if posted already, but...

Not to my knowledge. The bunny hop is definitely not required to beat the game, and I think the Mach Bike only opens up a few shortcuts.

Battle Factory would definitely be the most fun.

Yeah true, and the fact that Gen 2 is only a half step up from Gen 1 doesn't help. Which is why I think Gen 3 would be a more entertaining run because it will offer newer experiences.

Not sure if posted already, but...

Aha perfect. :D

And, stored Gator...:( Well I knew something had to happen with all the PC talk. At least we can get some grinding in for the rest now. Hopefully we'll get him back out once we have a better team that can handle themselves properly.

It wouldn't change much though, in terms of popularity. I called it as soon as the first run ended; the magic is gone. It's impossible to recapture it, regardless of which Pokemon is used.

I'm not even sure an entirely new game would do it. It might get closer, sure, but TPP Red was great because it has NEVER done before. That will never again be the case.

The magic is gone

RIPokemon

so that settles that original 151 is the best :p
it'll still be popular to cosplay for a while

the real loser is Nintendo for not capitalizing in releasing blue or red or both on 3DS vc , some guy said he'd buy a 3DS just to download it and play while the first run happened

oh Nintendo :(

I feel it could have worked as a yearly event though.

I would've been more interested in Crystal had they gone for the female protagonist.

The sad t hing about this compared to Pokemon Red was the fact Pokemon Red got that stupid religious backstory which made it interesting. So far, this is just the start of the Red run all over again, everything feels forced and it's just boring to watch. It'll get something cool happen and I've been watching on and off but it needs something like the fossil worship to return to it's former glory.

I feel it could have worked as a yearly event though.

I don't think so, because as I've said before, there would be a ton of other copycat Streamers doing the same thing for months, a year from now it would not be as big.

I think that if people really think that the stream has jumped the shark with gen 2 and the magic is gone, then the streamer just should have ended it at gen 1 and drawn the line there. Personally I still think gen 2 has potential despite a slow start though. I think it's like....some of the magic is gone, but some of it is still there. Plus I haven't experienced or gone back to gen 2 outside of the remakes in like, 8 years because when my save batteries died I never played my copies of G/S/C again so it's nice seeing what everything looks and sounds like again.

I was thinking you needed at least one of the two at route 119 as well, but turns out it was only for shortcuts and exploration.
My bad.

It doesn't look like we're leaving the Pokemon Center until Democracy kicks in. Half the chat wants to get Gator back, the other half wants to finish him off.
