My question is, why did the word selfie only catch on in the past few years when people have been taking pictures of themselves since portable cameras were invented?

Because social media has allowed people to take pictures of themselves doing totally unremarkable things and then broadcast them to their entire social networks for virtually zero cost.

In the past, nobody would do this because: 1) you'd be wasting one of your exposures from a roll of film, and/or 2) you'd have to sit someone down one-on-one and show them the picture of yourself doing nothing interesting. That's around the time when they would tell you they didn't give a shit seeing a random picture of your face.

He is the brother of someone in the pic. Can you guess who?
I find him kind of douchey. Scratch that, SUPER douchey. He blocked Angelina, ANGELINA! I'm sure he was like "Man, my sister just won an Oscar, I can't be the no body son, the things I'd do if people knew me.. wait, jackpot!"
Feel bad for having seen the Liza pic now. :(
Change random douche guy with Liza and the photo of the year becomes photo of the forever.

I find it disturbing that the photo is now probably the most famous and widely recongnisable photograph ever taken. Think about that.

There's always one. Well one for thing, it was retweeted 2.3 million times in record time, and has been by many many millions more.

But in six months the picture is forgotten. It might pop up during next Oscars but it won't be some culturally significant picture that people around the globe will recognize in the future.

Seriously, what's the big deal about that picture? Why do people think celebrities in public settings acting goofy is so unbelievable?

Not to mention it was a Samsung advertisement.
It was? All it advertised was crappy camera quality!
