Lightmaps cost memory. Why would baked shadows being removed count as a downgrade... baked shadows are part of the texture maps. They don't have an effect on performance. If they were removed it was due to a stylistic choice.

I agree with this.
It wasn't worth complaining about, but I wasn't a huge fan of the lighting shown in the beta.
i love it, that's how all the pros play! You can't drop below 120 fps and still be successful

No, all baked lighting and shadows has been greatly downgraded.A torch, really guys. That was it. We spent a whole day getting upset cause someone forgot to light a torch...

I'd like to think not, but I don't want further disappointment.Think they'll downgrade the PC version for gameplay parity?

Even in the shots with the torches on they cast no shadows in the environment.
Does the game run at a solid thirty? If so I completely understand the drop in quality if they were struggling to meet it and made frame rate a priority. The dangers of showing a game off too early I guess.
But the first one is from the PC version.
I mean, Im not saying lighting didnt get downgraded, but that IGN reveal was clearly running on PC

is just too much of a hit to art direction for me to even pretend its acceptable.
Not impossible. I remember interviews a while back where they claimed framerate will take a higher priority. Maybe they just mean never consistently below 25 as you said.solid 30 fps? impossible.
i'll be satisfied with 25-30 fps.
Not really the point...
That's a pretty stark downgrade. I guess they baited and switched.
When does Reviews pop up? Has FROM said anything about this?
What's funny is that the dynamic lighting was still present in the network test build, at least from a few light sources. Now it doesn't even look like the braziers you can light with your torch cast shadows.

There's a launch day review embargo. Not a good sign.

the video is called "Dark Souls 2 PS3 Gameplay - 5 Things We Learned"
So what is the point of the torches now if you can see better without lighting them?

Another reason to hold out for the PC version.
Re: @0:55 Yeah, those shadows were crazy as hell. It looked really bad, and quite disorienting.
This is what I'm thinking. I never played the beta, but I am under the impression that they had to optimise the game's graphics to improve performance and that's obviously what they've done.
2014 and we still want PC like graphics on 7+ year old hardware.
I'm pretty sure there's a good reason why they did knock it down a bit.
Regardless, I expect this to be a pretty fun game.
I always got the feeling they were showing the PC version... looked too good for last gen consoles in my eyes.
Not even mad.
Still there day zero on PS3 and going to love every moment of it, instead of spending my time complaining about visuals.
