Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Why would Jigglypuff suddenly become a starter character (assuming she is coming back)?

Why would Toon Link or Lucario suddenly become a starting character? Luigi and Marth I can understand.

There's clearly some changes going on in regards to unlockable characters this time around, even if it's just who is unlockable or not. It's also possible that all characters, including unlockables, will be shown before launch, or that there are no unlockable characters.

Toon Link and Lucario were unlockable characters in one game so far. Jigglypuff has been unlockable since the series premiered. Toon Link and Lucario make sense to be starters to me. Both of them are far more important and relevant to their respective franchises than Jigglypuff is.

Imagine if every disc came with a random starting roster and everyone had to use different ways to unlock each character.

Yoshi reveal this week then? It shouldn't be anything else really(if anything's revealed)

Toon Link and Lucario seem like the kind of characters who would stay unlockable, at least to me. Jigglypuff is a character who is more or less expected to return on the basis that it's had perfect attendance in the series to date, it's no secret. If every other unlockable from the original game can be a starting character at some point, so can Jigglypuff.

But... fairy type. It gives her a lot more relevance than she used to have.

Overstating it a bit, but yes, this is a good point as well.

They'll do this, but announce that there's one super secret unlockable character with some insane unlock requirements. The internet will go crazy with speculation, weeks will pass with no one finding the character. Is it Ridley?Mewtwo? K Rool? Pac-Man?

And then one day it'll happen, and it's some ridiculously obscure character that isn't even important in their own game, like some random Zelda NPC or something.

I dunno, I don't see it that way at all. Toon Link is the main character of his franchise (well, one version of him), and Lucario is pretty much the second mascot of the Pokémon series behind Pikachu. Jigglypuff...she's basically the joke character of Smash Bros. She may be expected, but that doesn't mean she shouldn't be unlockable.

Not THAT much more relevance...

I think it is pointless trying to think of criteria for what characters are unlockable or not.

I don't think a Pokemon spin-off matters much, but who knows. Have any of them actually been acknowledged in the games beyond a trophy? And when I mean "a trophy" I'm talking about that one with the Pokemon Snap vehicle.

Especially when characters that have always been unlockable in the past are being revealed before characters that have always formed the starting roster. We have no idea if there even are unlockable characters anymore.

TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT!

Very ominous.

Jigglypuff...she's basically the joke character of Smash Bros.

Actually, she was the second most popular Pokémon in Japan around the time of Smash 64. And remember that game was originally meant to be Japan exclusive.

Not THAT much more relevance...

I say it does, it takes her off the "old news" and "irrelevant" categories. It's the newest Pokémon type to date, and could leave possibe potential for new moves. But that's just speculation.

Eh, as better than main Link as he is and as much as people like Wind Waker, in the context of the Smash Bros. series, Toon Link comes across as a "bonus" version of main Link to me. He seems like a reward for diligent players and less distinctive as a character as some other clones. To be fair, he's a different incarnation, but they're both Link.

As for Lucario, he's a fan-favorite, but I don't know, I think Charizard is more of a mascot for the series than Lucario. I can't think of anyone other than Pikachu and Charizard that can be considered more of a mascot of the series, except maybe Mewtwo, but Jigglypuff has the advantage of a grandfather clause, giving it a semblance of seniority. Plus, Lucario comes across as an engineered fan-favorite, unlike Pikachu and Charizard. I mean, it made its debut in its own movie. That would make another "reward" character in my eyes.

If I boot up my copy of Pokemon Sapphire, it should be underwater by now. I glitched catching Kyogre and as a result, it always rains in the town next to where you catch him

So what you're saying is that in the Hoenn remakes, the region will be like Hyrule in Wind Waker?

:P

I don't think Sakurai's revealed anything relevant in conjunction with a digital release yet, though.

Nor has he revealed a character in conjunction with the launch date of a Pokemon game. These would both be firsts, but they are also potential strikes against getting a character tonight. We'll just have to wait and see.

What's coming out digitally tonight/tomorrow that might prompt (it won't) a reveal?

Pokemon Battle Trozei.

I don't think Lucario is more well known than Jigglypuff.

I'd probably put Charizard, Mewtwo and Meowth above Lucario, too.

Fairy type's official mascot is Sylveon though. Unless they change Jigglypuff's moves to reflect her Fairy-ness, it'd be moot (mind you, she's not pure Fairy).

Which I must say, is a milestone for eeveelutions. They are rarely considered as something. The last "milestone" they started was in Gen 1 for "unique evolutions".

OH MY GOD

Thank you was waitying for someone to mention this before i did. I do hope if jiggle returns with new moves she just keepws here killer air game as is,or make better. also replace rest with a fairy move or something.
as much as i loved it but don't think there too keen on keeping easy 1hit ko's since Sakurai nerfed it back in brawl

Lucario would probobly a more of a mascot for a lot of peeps considering he represents a person shift in pokemon in age and in interest. There are people playing Pokemon, epically young people, who don't know or care about the OG 150 so charizard has no reverence ( or as my younger cousin says a dumb chicken dragon ) they just like lucario , so him being a mascot is more than possible.

Next onto the bolded, what is an engineered fan favorite? If you mean giving a pokemans a movie that has happened plenty of times.

I disagree. I think as time goes by Jigglypuff increasingly becomes more irrelevant. Jiggly is more well known among those that grew up with gen 1. However Lucario has been marketed as a big mascot for the past 10 years. Jigglypuff's reign as a mascot was 2-3 years. If it weren't for X/Y, Mewtwo would've been pretty irrelevant for 10+ years as well.
