Wow we're at the whole protest Namco because they lied, I'm happy to announce I'm boycotting them for lying about the powers of the pendant in Dark Souls, can't believe they're just hitting us with false advertising like nothing!
Honestly though, I do hope they respond to this, not that I really care about it much, and the fact that they gutted it so close to launch could be due to tons of serious bugs, but I do at least hope they give us an explanation for not even letting us know.

Honestly I hope it doesn't look like doo-doo, but who knows what will happen; it is truly bizzare that footage from 2 mo. ago is different from retail. How long does a dev even need to finish up so that thing can ship? The whole 3 builds argument will explode if the lighting/torch mechanic is missing.

The problem with the torch isn't how many shadows it's showing, it's the fact that without it you cans till clearly see everything around you. In fact getting the torch out actually makes stuff in the distant harder to see.
So many people keep posting stuff talking about straight visuals. But the torch mechanic did more than just look good in the older builds, it changed up the mechanics quite a bit. Stripping out that torch mechanic or at least the intensity of it changed up the mechanics and enemy placements of those areas compared to their original intended purpose

Not true at all on the torch mechanic. They are some very dark areas late in the game that have secret drop off sections that you cannot see one bit without having the brightness on max or a torch.

Where is the twitter campaign for DS1 pretty much getting shut down to GFWL dying? Now that is some shit to get pissed about.
From are planning to remove GFWL.
- GFWL shut down will not effect your ability to play any games.
- Bandai is currently working on removing GFWL from both Ace Combat and Dark Souls.
I really wonder if there were some legitimate issues that came up and mistakes were made, regarded the quality of the retail game.

That's great, because as i said in the steam thread recently, GFWL gave me one last 'fuck you' the other day, reinstalling Dark Souls.

My biggest issue with the GFWL and Dark Souls situation is that moving the game to Steamworks might stop DSCFix from being able to work.

Here's hoping that FROM & Namco keep the unusable join game option in Steam during multiplayer so that DSCFix will still be compatible, or perhaps incorporate DSCFix into the actual game.
Of course, I can't really see either of them happening. I imagine it'll be back to the frustrating days of hoping you can find your friends.

Hmm, I never got the chance to use it because none of my friends play it on the computer. It does seem convenient though.
The move to Steamworks won't change too much. The game is still rendered using DX9, Durante will be able to reconfigure the mod around whatever they do.

DSCFix is the one that makes you connect instantly to people in your friends list.
I stand firmly in that the response will be "time/technical limitations". If that is the victory everyone wants, fine.

You guys are exactly right, whatever they do will likely break DCfix. I doubt the system will be as finicky as the current GFWL implementation, so the need for such a mod might be diminished.

The summoning issues are a problem with the way the game handles online and the netcode. No such issues are in Demons Souls and Dark Souls 2 PS3 because of dedicated servers.
I'm sure GFWL ain't helping though.

Sure you can still play the game but Souls games to me is all about that emergent multiplayer. To let that part of the game die with GFWL is just bad form.

I had to play the game (still not done yet, but pretty close) in order to reach this conclussion: BAMCO pushed FROM to release the game before the cross-generation window of opportunity fades away.
This is a "beta" that really needed at least an extra year of work. You can see they were aiming for something truly grand but the end result is just a half baked cake that only tastes good because the Co-op icing is incredibly addictive.
The console version was prematurely launched. They could have waited a whole year in order to release a stellar product both for next-gen consoles and PC but they decided to cash-in as many fans of the series as they could.

If it eases your conscience, this long time Souls fan would be doing the same if he actually had PC capable of running any modern games. In that sense, I'm simply stuck with the PS3 version and will have to hope for the best with regards to FROM / Bamco fixing / adding / patching stuff.
(And apart from the lighting issues that make characters look oddly flat, my most requested fix would be some tweaks to the animations / overall character movement to make walking and running feel less skiddy / floaty / unweighty in comparison to the previous two games that got this element down perfect.)

As someone that's played the game (rental) already I don't deny that it's still incredibly fun but I also won't lie and say that the reduced visuals aren't noticeable and don't take away from the gameplay (when you've seen how it was supposed to look). I felt like the torch mechanic is largely useless in the retail version as you can see better in low lighting without it and actually lighting the stationary torches is completely unnecessary now. It went from being a gameplay mechanic to something that felt tacked on and optional to me. Hell I went through a good chunk of the beginning of the game without even realizing how to use the damn things since I didn't notice the toggle option at the bonfires.
While I still plan on picking the game up sometime soon I can't deny that some areas look far more bland than I was led to believe. I also don't have any problems with others thinking that FROM could at least tell us what happened and what will happen with the PC/possible next gen versions of the game. We don't know the reasoning indeed. Doesn't change the fact that they certainly never told us about these changes, and, something which is stranger and arguably more serious is that no video game site whatsoever mentionned those changes (at least one of them should have noticed something). People were misleaded, and to put it bluntly something stinks.
