Oddworld: New n Tasty priced at $30 (250,000 sales for Exodus remake greenlight)

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...ll-500k-to-fund-an-original-new-oddworld-game

Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning told Eurogamer today at GDC that he only needs to sell 250K copies of New 'n' Tasty to fund a remake of Abe's Exoddus, the next planned project in the series. Selling more will help fund an all new Oddworld game after that, and Lanning believes he can create this offering if New 'n' Tasty shifts half a million units.

What do people think of the price for the remake?

"This game will play better, look better, and you'll have more fun with for more hours of play than games you're paying $60 for," Lanning said. "That's a promise. And I can say that with absolute confidence."

"If this had a publisher, the price would be higher and they'd be calling in triple A."

EDIT

Sorry forgot to put the most important bit.

That might sound like a lot, but Lanning is very confident about its quality. He explained that unlike most indie games that cost about $100K or so, this remake has a budget of nearly $5 million with about $2 million coming out of pocket, while the rest is based on an estimated $2-$3 million in assets the studio kept from back in the day, then later touched up.

FIVE MILLION?

"$30."
"$29.99 USD."

Its a remake of a fantastic game that retailed as a full priced game. $30 sounds fine, Fable Anniversary was $40, FF X/X-2 is $40, seems fair to me.

The most interesting part of this article is that the dev is flat out saying what he needs to sell to fund another game.

I'm a huge oddworld fan so I'm gonna buy it regardless. I think it's a fine price honestly.

You cheap bastiches better buy this game so we can get the exoddus remake.

Also; we need a release date already.

Price is ballsy. It certainly puts the game outside of impulse buy, but if well made could get great reviews and word of mouth and really help solidify it as a premium title. I think if they offered a sku at retail for $30 as well they might do even better. That's really the challenge for these new breed of middle tier games is if they can break into retail like Minecraft.

More than I expected, but it's top-shelf treatment of a great game.

Now we can see why Lorne didn't conform to Microsoft's parity clause. He needs this damn thing out the door ASAP so they can actually sell it.

people who want the return of the mid priced games, this is your chance to support one

fan of the original so no problem dropping 30 bucks for this one

At a much later date in time, I'd like to see Sony offer this to plus members so that Lorne gets a big fat check for it. I say that more so for the studios sake than my for the sake of my PS plus collection. I truly want to see them get the money they need to keep rolling.

$30 for a full remake of Abe's Oddysee? That sounds like a steal to me.

I hope it sells the 250k it needs to in order to green light the Abe's Exodus remake.

So that's about £18, hmmm that's a tad bit pricey but this is a remake which it sorely needed and the money is going straight for the sequel so I can let this slide.

Edit: Oh it cost $5 million to make, oh that explains the pricing then.

Exactly.

I have absolutely no problems with this price, and I hope that other people also support it. It looks like a brilliant remake, from a group of passionate devs that really need the sales. I'm not saying we as customers are in the business of charity necessarily, but this kind of mid-tier pricing is something that needs to be experimented with to keep the industry going.

Full scale remake of a pretty lengthy game, price seems fair
yup
great price
really hope people arent ruined by "all downloadable games are supposed to be 5-15 dollars"

edit: but. really? he's teasing a remake of exoddus now? i LOVE that game, but fucking come on. use this tech and make a new abe game! i don't want another remake

Well that's a lot. $5 loyalty discount for those who own the oddbox would go a long way at that price point.

Did see this coming when JAW's rep on GAF was defending the pixel junk monsters price

WOAAAAH A $5 MILLION BUDGET

damn Lorne Lanning...crazy

Sounds to me like the remake cost $2 million and they're trying to include the cost of developing the original game in the total.
Still impressive.

Looking forward to it, but I'll be waiting for the Wii U version to come out.

Probably the only series where I'll stomach this kind of price for digital.

this is a multiplatform game right? PC as well as PS3/Vita?

I'm buying it. I think Oddworld is a great series. Lanning's a cool dude.

Nope, this is a full, complete remake with actual scrolling screens.

hrm..i never thought about that
scrolling screens is gonna change things quite a bit, no?
i guess this is isn't just a straight up recreation of the original screens and puzzles then?

Yikes!

I bought the Oddbox 2-3 years ago for something like $25 and it included all 4 Oddworld games with a free upgrade to the HD Strangers Wrath when that was released on PC (and I have yet to play more than about an hour between all of them, lol).

Definitely want to check out the remake, but not for $30 when I already own the original (and haven't played it).

Exactly -- this means that there will be lots of changes to the puzzle design. If you played the original, you know that a large part of certain puzzles/enemies involved the screen transitions. The new style fundamentally changes the design.

It will be very interesting to see how the remake changes a ton of things.
